Are Football cards poised to explode?!?
1 Attachment(s)
Man... I hope this post doesn’t set off a wildfire, but... I was looking at the current prices for Basketball, and while comparing the two sports there is plenty of room for growth in Football cards . I’m looking at plenty of QBs that could pop come beginning and mid to end of season. Thoughts?

Tough comparison. Football does not have anywhere near the global market of tallball.

Football will probably never come close to bball prices unfortunately
|
Score Mahomes in PSA 10's are selling for 300 or more...it's already gone crazy.

2019 Prizm is $600+ a box with the top 4 QBs (Murray, Lock, Minshew and Jones) combining for a whopping 18 wins and one player getting 1/3 of that total. It just doesn’t make sense.

Mahomes had one W as a rookie. Rodgers 0. Lamar Jackson 5 or 6 (in which he wasn’t all that impressive). Not saying prices aren’t inflated, but using wins as a rookie as a metric that should determine RC prices after one season isn’t particularly reliable. It’s reasonable for people to gamble that Murray or Lock or Jones will pan out. It’s possible they will, it’s possible they won’t. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It’s also not $600+ |

You’re right. It’s on sale for $599 now, down from $649. Mea culpa. Feel better? |
With no season a potential reality, I say no.
|
nah..
|
Define explode?
Because they already have. Watson is a $500 card right now... It was selling in the $130 range at the end of February (PWCC sold a PSA 10 on 2/24 for $131) Basketball is just a different beast |
Also right now we are living on hype. If none of those QBs are MVP or make a solid playoff run, then whatever prices they are at now, will drop - some significantly.
|
People are discounting Daily Fantasy players. If they come into cards like the sneaker community did to basketball, game over for all skill players
|
This feels a little explode-y.

I know NOTHING about the basketball market, so I’m sorry if this is a stupid question, but is that what’s driving the explosion in the basketball card market? |

Yes .. |
There will be speculators but FB is the most star heavy of all the sports in terms of value. There are only a handful of players who sustain value or grow and most are QB's.
Historically most of those 2019 QB's will fail. Even if they have some success they become Steve McNair or Donovan McNabb. The bar for continued monetary success is Brady, Brees and Manning. |
