2001 Contenders set question...
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the Dan Morgan AU in this set. Haven't been able to locate this card. I know it was in redemption form but was it actually redeemed? I see a few listed as graded in the pop report. How many are actually out there? Did playoff destroy unredeemed cards? Always had a fascination with this set and I have a chunk of it completed but there are several cards that have been incredibly hard for me to locate. |
I don't have any firsthand knowledge, but it looks like one just sold a couple weeks ago: eBay

Wow, very interesting. I must have totally missed it. I usually look there. Thank you. |

I collect Rams Contenders and had a hard time finding the Adam Archuleta "no autograph" SN/50. I ended up finding two of them, the only two I've seen in three years. Worthpoint is a good place to see if cards have been released. 2001 Contenders set question...
Yay! An old school contenders question! It's my big moment to shine!!! Here we go:
Yes, the Dan Morgan is reasonably tough to find. I believe the stated print run was 500, but after tracking down most the cards in the set over the year, I've noticed this one is harder to find and seems more limited than 500. The Archuleta was one of the cards that had no auto and limited to 50. Back in the day, when Contenders didn't have variations, these SPP cards were huge chases. The Lamont Jordan, of all people was something like a $400 card at one point. Big money for 2001-02. |

I got outbid on a Richard Seymour No Autograph /50 back in 2016 or so and then never saw another one. Even if it showed up again, I don't think I'd be willing to pay whatever the 2020 price is.

Yeah, they're tough to find. Looks like a few popped up in 2016, and then one in 2017 and one more in 2018. One just ended recently on May 16 for $41. Ive never been a Contenders guy, but this is the best year in my opinion as far as looks go, and the rookie class helps

Wow, nice pick ups there!
I am glad this thread has picked up some traction! Yes, the 'No Autographs' were all limited to 50. Very tough to find nowadays. But the thing is they were also redemptions - and a ton of wax likely went unopened (conjecture) past the expiration date and thus the 'no auto' redemptions likely didn't all get out. So there is probably less than 50 copies of each. Haha. I remember when Quincy got the starting nod from Parcells and the hobby went absolutely bonkers for this card. Saw them go for around $600 since it was autographed, a redemption and limited to 50 copies. The Lamont Jordan also went bonkers once he started to get carries. I know the Boo Williams, Lamont Jordan, Andre Carter and Rod Gardner from this set are also SSPs. I think around 50 copies were made of each and those were all signed. Could anyone confirm that? Kenyatta Walker too, I am pretty sure. This set is such a PITA with the redemptions and unconfirmed print runs; but it brings back so many good memories for me and the rookie class is very solid. Not to mention the condition sensitivity of the card stock. |

I had 3-4 of the /50 cards at one point but moved them when I dissolved my PC.
If my memory serves me correctly:
Boo Williams: 50 Lamont Jordan: 50 Andre Carter: 101? or 75 Rod Gardenr: 75 Kenyatta Walker: 50
That sounds about right. I would doubt that the 50-100 copies actually got out to market given the frequency I see these on ebay. But that is just me using very rough anecdotal evidence - and the fact that they were mail-in redemptions. I would assume some of these were simply never redeemed. Am I am missing anyone else from the SSP club in this set? |
Check Beckett. They have a lot of the SP cards listed with the print run.

True statement. If my memory serves me I believe the ones I am mentioning were never confirmed nor stated by Playoff or Beckett (Playoff began doing that in 2004 after the 2002 and 2003 sets were serially numbered). I wish they would just release the actual number of copies that had been redeemed. For every contenders year for that matter! |

They may have missed some, though, or been inaccurate. |
Isn't 2001 Steve Smith's rookie year?...What is the print run for his card?

Yes, it is. Check Beckett for the print run. |

Pretty sure it was between 200-300 copies. |

Very sharp looking. HOFer soon too. Bonkers career stats. Nearly 15K receiving yds. The set is absolutely loaded with HOFer's. |

Big money for 2001-02.
Lamont Jordan was going for crazy $ when he signed a big contract with the Raiders after doing pretty good being stuck behind Curtis Martin on the Jets. The reason he was so hyped was because he had some decent stats in a small sample time. He averaged 7.5 and 5.2 yards per carry in a couple of seasons. |

Lol I was the winner of that one on May 16. And actually, I had been chasing that card for years, and if you look back all of those sales from 2016-18 are for the exact same serial # card I purchased (#40/50) and it declined in price every time. I think someone was hoping for a big payday on it, but never materialized. Oh well, good for me I guess :) |

I think some of these SSPs might be under-appreciated. Especially given that some take years to come across. Like the ones mentioned. Would be hard pressed to say that there is actually /50 of each of the No AUTOs out on the market. Seems like far less. Same with the SSP Autos mentioned. But many collectors might have just tucked them away. Lamont Jordan showed flashes of being an every down back. |
