How much would you overpay for a PC dream Card?
I’ve been building a collection for my 2 year old son since before he was born and there has been a card at the top of my list since I started dreaming it up that is currently available but the seller wants nearly 33% over going rate for the card. Patience is a virtue and I could surely wait it out for another copy to pop but I’ve been doing really well on flips as of late and the extra $$$ isn’t really the issue, it’s just the thought of overpaying for something so outrageously over market.
What would you do? Have you overpaid for a card before? How much is too much? CARD IN QUESTION BELOW: |
There is no too much
I’d pay whatever it took depending on how often they pop up |
If it's a numbered card, you gotta kinda pay whatever they want within reason. Obviously the lower the number, the more they can ask for.
If it's a dream card, and you have the funds available, I'd say pull the trigger. Sometimes you try bidding on these cards and think another will pop up soon, and it never does! |
Depends on the rarity of the card and cost.
I might pay 33% over asking on a $100. I would have to think about the extra cost if the card is $1000. |
I'll just throw a ridiculous amount that I know I can afford.

Cards that I’ll overpay for are the once in my lifetime cards. I overpaid a few hundred on each a Hank Aaron and Roberto Clemente rookie cards. But if it’s something I have to have, no price is too much.

I wish my dream card was priced $500 over.
|
whatever it takes
|
If it is a 1/1 or really rare, like limited to 5 or 10 that only comes about once every few years. Even 1/1s I have a limit, I've a watched a few cards for 5 years that are over priced, no one else is buying it for that amount so I guess the guy can sit on it. I guess it also depends if the card will appreciate a lot more or if the player or card has a ceiling it has hit!
|
My two cents on the question. If it's a dream card, then I am making an assumption that this card rarely ever is available for sale. If that is the case then there really isn't a comparable market price to gauge against, it's whatever the market demands. I would buy the card and not look back if you can afford it, most likely it will increase over time and you will make good on the current price.

Give away free money??
No thanks |
I never say never about keeping/selling, but a good rule of thumb for me is:
1) will I most likely want to keep this card in my PC as long as possible? I don't want to overpay significantly on a card only to want/have to flip it for a loss in a year or two. So I must be confident it will be a card I will enjoy for years to come. 2) do I have the income at hand to overpay for this? This isn't going to knock out my entire card budget for the year or force me to get desperate? 3) Will the end goal of acquiring this card at any price bring me more satisfaction than a quantity of cheaper cards I can acquire in total? I've answered all 3 on some cards and never looked back. Then there's been some cards that made me pause and ultimately probably best I didn't get them. Sometimes if there's a rare card you know just meets your desires perfectly, you gotta do what you gotta do. |

I’d say this card pops 1-3 times annually, but most are tucked away in collections. |

I just can’t seem to pull the trigger and give the satisfaction to a seller by overpaying so much when I have been tracking it for so long and know the market inside and out on this one. |

I look back and know I was the winner, go buy the card and don’t look back! |
I hate the idea of "paying whatever it takes" because that just emboldens sellers to try to gouge customers. But as this forum is largely comprised of sellers, "paying whatever it takes" is always going to be a popular opinion here.
The concept of overpaying largely depends on the extent one knows the market. The extent I'd be willing to overpay depends on how quickly I think someone else would be willing to pay that price before I am...and the extent the item is overpriced. |
I had a card like this, Heritage Chrome Gold #/5, which a seller wouldn't budge below $500 this time last year. At the time the card was probably worth $250. A year later a 2nd version of the card popped up, and the offer was $500 again, but this time I felt the player's value had grown into that level. I happily paid $500.
Moral: it may feel like you wait a long time, but even for very very rare cards, it is likely you may see one pop up every 1-2 years. And hopefully on the next go-around it is a fair price, even if no discount to the prior listing. :) BTW some sellers just like to stick it to you... I have another card I'm interested in now. Probably worth $100-150 on auction. Seller listed for $900. I sent a note with a lot of comps demonstrating the price. The seller was kind in response. But raised the listing price to $1250. Oh well. |
A card was on eBay 2 years ago. Psa10 pop20. I wanted it. Thought about it. Then it sold. Had mad regret.
I saw one on eBay yesterday. 25% more. I pulled the trigger knowing I probably over paid but didn’t really care. Salvage the regret for not buying earlier. It’s a new cornerstone of my pc and went sell. Overpaid? Yea probably. Glad I got? Most def. |
Question you have to ask yourself can this card increase in value if I wait and would the price I pay now go up next time above this price if you wait to buy.
I’d say this card pops 1-3 times annually, but most are tucked away in collections.
Couple comments: 1.) If the card pops 1-3 times per year, when did it sell last? Cards have exploded. Certain cards are doubling everyday. Which leads into comment 2 2.) Is it a card that you could look at as an investment opportunity along with the card being a PC? If you believe in the hobby and the card, you might be able to justify the purchase. $500 is a decent chunk of change. |

Can the card increase in price, absolutely but not because of market volatility. I am just concerned the way everything is going right now will it just ride the wave to inflation like a number of other cards. It’s a card that has steadily increased in price over the years but currently sits around $1500 in value and seller isn’t budging off $2000, which is what a PSA 10 copy is bringing. |

I again worry that this is just the market right now and too much money out there to justify the spend. It will be $400 over value with my 5% eBay bucks if I pull the trigger which helps a little. |

What would you do? Have you overpaid for a card before? How much is too much?
33% depends on value and if one will likely show up again. I'd probably buy it if it's PC and dream card. Probably too often. If it's PC and I want it then I'll likely probably bid some crazy number just to get it. If it's my dream card it's probably not showing up again. So depends how dreamy it is. Sometimes when I see a card I just have to have it and no price so far as stopped me. In reality it just depends on how financially well off you are. |
