Highest Increase in Player/Card
So I know that football's answer would probably be Tom Brady for the highest increase in a player or card vs when it came out but what about baseball? The card does not have to still sell for it for example I was thinking Ryan Howard when he was MVP and crushing home runs. I do not know increase amount though vs original release?
Mike Trout is excluded. Also we are talking modern players/cards. Not 52 Mantle and so on. All of this talk about Vlad shooting up to crazy prices now makes me wonder what it was like previously before I really tracked the $ piece and just collected to collect. Also it would be beneficial with some what of supporting price ballpark. |
Mookie was extremely cheap in 2014. Didn't have a lot of hype.
Aaron Judge prices were dirt cheap pre-2017. Puig prices went nuts a few years ago, but then dropped. |
Jeremy Lin in basketball during Linsanity also sticks out
|
In basketball, I remember when this card wasn’t worth much:

If we’re talking % increase, I believe Judge. Base autos went from $20 to $800.

This is really not a good question as you could easily say the 52 Mantle and the Wagner are the kings. The 86-87 Jordan comes to mind as well.

I am talking baseball and I should have mentioned modern cards in the op, Ill add it in. |
Omar Vizquel, for awhile :p
|
I bought a couple of Tom Brady's base rookies (Pacific Paramount) out of the 10 cent box back in 2010/2011. I think they sell for $40-$50 at the moment. I had them unsleeved in a common box until I found them again last year.

You can include Acuna 2018 TC Sapphire #698 in the list of cards that had the highest increase short term (600% increase in 2 months). Raw cards went from $100 in early November to $700 in mid January.

And it was 100 dollars raw back in June. |
Luke Voit comes to mind last year
Blake Snell Base Chrome RC autos were $2 ea one year ago, $15-20 now. Yelich German Marquez cards are up about 5x from last year Mostly the RCs of the low end bums I follow Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I bought a lot of 15(!) PSA 10's on here for $285 dlvd. |
For Vlad, I was paying $80 for base BC autos out of the gate. I was getting his Bowman’s Best autos for $60 and I grabbed a few Bowman Platinum autos for $60. My regret was not buying more.

Why are you including Brady for football but excluding Trout for baseball?
Trout is the most obvious answer. After that, it depends on how you account for cards that are worth less than shipping. One that comes to mind is the 2013 Bowman chrome mini insert of Puig. It was the only licensed card of him when he made the majors and became really hot. A few months before that you'd be lucky to get 99 cents for it on eBay and at its peak it was going for about $50. If you're excluding shipping and PayPal fees that's 70 cents to $50 in a few months and even then you were lucky to be able to sell it individually before he made the majors. |

I was selling worthless proofs for $100-$500 each. THAT was insanity. |

Yeah, it’s a horrible photo and the overall look of the card sucks. But after he won back to back MVP’s and won some rings, this card shot up in price like crazy. It went from a $20-$30 to almost $1k. |
Canseco, Bonds, McGwire.
|
For my own experience, I bought a Giannis Next Day auto when it was $40.
It was even cheaper earlier 2014.. |
Yeah those Bowman minis of Puig were a little crazy

I honestly can’t get over how he looks like a 7th grader in the photo. |

Base autos in 2014 were in the $40 range which by 2014 standards would be considered a "top 3-5 guy." Ryan Howard BB Autos use to be $10, at one point they were $800-$1,000. Now they are probably back to $10 Something similar with David Wright although admittedly I don't know where DWrights BC started out at prior to liftoff. |
