Anyone Here Collect 80's PSA rookies?
My first love was always baseball when it came to collecting cards, and when the strike happened in 1994 I pretty much stopped collecting baseball altogether. Here we are over 20 years later and I'm starting to fall back in love with baseball cards again. Many of you here know me as a big football collector, but I've been buying up a nice cache of PSA 9 and PSA 10 rookies from my childhood, from 1977-1989. It's been rather affordable, too, which has been perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of this. Getting a PSA 9 1986 Jose Canseco Rated Rookie for $20 makes the kid in me smile.
It has me wondering if anyone else here collects PSA graded rookies from this time frame. I'll have to post my cards here soon when I get to scanning them. If anyone else here wants to contribute, I'd love to see what you guys have! |
i collect PSA Rookie cards from 1948 to 2017, with a Focus of HOFers.
PSA 9s are a fantastic way to save a bunch of money when you stack them to their PSA 10 counterparts. i look forward to seeing your progress :) |

Indeed, I'm finding that the PSA 9's, which look really sharp, are more affordable and quite enjoyable to pick up. I'm also picking up a lot of the PSA 10 rookies for the less expensive rookies. So far, this is what I've accumulated: 1982 Topps Bonner/Scheider/Cal Ripken Jr. #21 RC PSA 9 1983 Donruss Tony Gwynn #598 RC PSA 9 1983 Fleer Tony Gwynn #360 RC PSA 9 1983 Topps Traded Darryl Strawberry #108T XRC PSA 9 1984 Donruss Tony Fernandez (Rated Rookie) #32 RC PSA 9 1984 Donruss Joe Carter (Rated Rookie) #41 RC PSA 9 1984 Donruss Don Mattingly #248 RC PSA 9 1984 Fleer Tony Fernandez #152 RC PSA 10 1984 Topps Traded Dwight Gooden #42T XRC PSA 9 1984 Topps Traded Jimmy Key #62T XRC PSA 10 1984 Topps Traded Mark Langston #70T XRC PSA 10 1984 Topps Traded Bret Saberhagen #104T XRC PSA 10 1985 Donruss Eric Davis #325 RC PSA 10 1986 Donruss Jose Canseco (Rated Rookie) #39 RC PSA 9 1986 Donruss Rookies Jose Canseco #22 PSA 10 1986 Donruss RookiesBo Jackson #38 XRC PSA 9 1986 Fleer Benito Santiago/Gene Walter #644 RC PSA 10 1987 Donruss Bo Jackson (Rated Rookie) #35 RC PSA 10 1987 Donruss Greg Maddux (Rated Rookie) #36 RC PSA 9 1987 Donruss Mark McGwire (Rated Rookie) #46 FDC PSA 10 1987 Topps Traded Tiffany Ellis Burks #14T XRC PSA 10 1987 Topps Traded Tiffany Kevin Seitzer #111T XRC PSA 10 |
I collect raw rookies mostly from 1985 and before....guys like Ripken, Gwynn, Boggs, Sandberg, Mattingly, Clemens, and Puckett are my most common. I have some of the lesser players like Saberhagen, Gooden, Strawberry, and a bunch of 1986-1989 raw rookies. Some day I may put together a submission for grading, but it certainly won't be BGS...not now, not ever. I like PSA and SGC, but find the slightly bigger SGC slabs to be a bit on the clunky side, so it will be PSA if I do it.

I have been buying a boat load, mostly focusing on 80's HOFs. Lately it has been the Tiffany's. I have pretty much cleared out BBCE and ebay on 86' fasc wax. I just can't get enough of them.

Sorry for sounding like a newb, but what is "fasc wax"? |

From A Sealed Case, IMHO the only way to buy 80's wax |

How can you be certain the case has not been resealed? I have bought 80s boxes and packs and I know the risk is there that the packs have been resealed, but the boxes are so cheap anyway, it's not a big deal for me. |

You can never be certain, but if its bbce wrapped that's your best hedge |

Oh gotcha and thank you. Hard to go wrong with anything from BBEC. Are you trying to get any particular player(s) from 1986 Topps? |

Good to know. Thank you. |
I collect a few mainly Darryl Strawberry / Ryne Sandberg
|
Primarily 70s, 80s and 90s for me but 80s are my favorites. Reminds me of earlier collecting, and I love the fact you can find most of them for a fraction of what they used to sell for.

The best thing to collect I my opinion! Check out the link in my sig
I'm waiting on an order of 30 more from psa that is taking forever to pop. Wil hopefully be adding some 10s to it! |
Love that Gooden. That's what I'm talking about right there. I picked up his 1984 Topps Traded PSA 9 XRC and the little kid in me still can't believe I own one of those. That card was so damn expensive back in 1987 when I started collecting baseball. It's awesome owning one. I'm definitely picking up some of his rookie cards PSA 9 or 10 down the road. Those 1985's are really nice.

you NEED his '84 FU! |
You can get some decent psa8 Henderson rookies for good prices, the hard part is finding them centered. The 9s are a big jump $$$ wise though
