Whats most unique player you seen someone be a supercollector of?

Im about to start a collection of a player and i was wondering what players you have seen collected that are unique where there just isnt that much out there of them?

What kind of items you have heard of in these collections aside from cards?

thanks in advance!

I have supercollected Prince Amukamara (whom I recently sold all of but the 1/1s for financial reasons), Justin Pugh (LG of the Giants), Cito Culver (Yankee first round pick who has never made the big leagues), Ryan Callahan (hockey player, former captain of the Rangers, but never a top notch player hobby wise), and a few other smaller scale guys.

I like the underdog

Well there was a lot of cards made of Anthony "A-Train" Thomas who I collected hard for a long time. I have all kinds of stuff of his..Auto's Jsy/Mini's 8x10's and big card collection. Haven't been persuing much of him lately but do every once in a while score something to add to it.

I liked watching him at U of M and he won rookie of the year over the likes of Brees/Vick/Tomlinson/Chad Johnson etc.....he & the Bears defense carried the Bears to the playoffs and then Chicago thought someone else was going to be the promised land....he went on to a couple other teams as back up after the Bears & the Bears ended up going down hill:flex:

I have a #@#@#@#@ ton of Greg Reynolds cards. He was the super bust pitcher from Stanford who was picked second overall and one pick ahead of Longoria. He was my brother's close friend growing up and home town hero.

I started collecting Courtney Roby when he was a rookie in 2005. He was a 3rd round pick and was at the premiere and had a decent amount of cards. But after his rookie season, he was barely featured in anything, except for maybe the UD Artifacts set, maybe 1-2 Topps Total releases and the Saints Super Bowl set (if Upper Deck released one). He did last a long time in the NFL though (by today's standards) as mostly a special-teamer for New Orleans.

Also, Marlon Brown. He's from here (Memphis), a couple of buddies went to high school with him and before he went to Georgia and was still in high school, he came over to mine and my roommates' house a handful of times and hung out. Had a solid rookie year, was in Flawless and NT, but Ravens signed Steve Smith and he was basically demoted. Struggled to see the field in 2015 and was not re-signed, then went to Denver, got hurt, and that's the last I heard. Oh well, I still enjoy collecting him.

Before Clayton Kershaw? :)!

cookingwine 01-09-2017 08:36 PM

My good friend went to Michigan State and went hard, and I mean hard, on Darqueze Dennard. He has 7 of the 2014 Contenders cracked ice autos, 3 of the 1/1 printing plates from National Treasures, game-used Nike swoosh cards from 2015 Spectra, and probably 70 different autograph cards of his. On top of that, he has practice used jerseys signed by him, game used MSU gloves, an autographed helmet with 7 different inscriptions, and two different Dennard jerseys.

Needless to say, he's really excited for next season when Dennard should be a regular starter for the Bengals.

Yep, before him too and Lincecum which was a much bigger deal 7 years ago.

Couple of guys that have some nice, more obscure, PCs:

- c squared - Rob Johnson: He's got quite a few of his cards, and there aren't many!

- alanch - Jim Leohnard: Well-rounded collection, with some awesome g/u memorabilia-actual helmets, jerseys, pants, gloves, etc., forget about swatches.

- jaderock - Mark Brunell: His collection is what "super collecting" is all about, imo. Nesting dolls, g/u jerseys, balls, helmets, press photos, etc., etc., etc. He touts is collection as 'the most complete player collection in the world' and I wouldn't argue.

The Terrell Suggs collector here has a crazy supercollection. Fun to look at

zonacats8 01-09-2017 11:08 PM

I think I have a pretty decent one with Star Lotulelei and would put it up against anyone's player PC in terms of completeness.

He only has around 150 cards and I have all but 1 of his non 1/1's, and then I have 8 of the 9 1/1's that have surfaced so far to my knowledge, including the Chrome Super and NT 1/1.

They called me the Saddam Hussein supercollector at my LCS for a little while after I pulled his cut from Horrors of War and then a couple months later from Leaf Oval Office(a dual w/ him and Bush Sr)....

I am STILL waiting on a Saddam Hussein /5 auto redemption.
And I'm seriously beginning to lose patience.

brianshaft 01-09-2017 11:35 PM

I have all but 8 Chris Slade cards (besides 1/1s- and he doesn't have too many of those), and I also have all but 6 Patrick Chung cards (besides 1/1s and I have 6 of those)

They gonna go find his body and sign for him?

montypython 01-10-2017 12:37 AM

I've started collections of Kyle Van Noy and Bronson Kaufusi--who only have a few dozen cards plus some 1/1s printed.

I knew them back at BYU, so there's some emotional context to tracking them.

I also collect Ziggy Ansah, but that's not so unique. I've got signed gloves from his BYU days, a signed SI profile about him pre-draft, and some other miscellaneous college training gear. He lived in the apartment next door to me in college and we played FIFA on a weekly basis. He's freaking good at it!

Levon Washington, Cleveland Indians. I have everything completed through the #/5's in Bowman 2014 BB (regular, not chrome.) Got the 1/1 red paper non-auto.

His superfractor auto hit ebay a while ago and since Wash had washed out, it wasn't sky-high, but it went for more than my collecting budget would allow. The white ice 1/1 was sold on ebay in Canada, not too long after the product was available, but before I began collecting him. Didn't find out about that sale until later on, and haven't seen it since.

Wonder if I should try to find his address and send the collection to him? Thoughts?

Most know I supercollect Everett and Ellard....

......but also do Quinn Early, Mark Fields, Alex Molden and Flipper Anderson. The following is progress including all parallels, 1/1s and plates.

252/294 on Early
124/129 on Fields
100/107 on Molden
Not sure on Anderson

The guy that collects Matt Ware has my favorite collection of guys who don't have many cards. So he collects any and all of every card of him he can find. Here was his last totals.

Now at 3,665 cards, all 2004 RC year cards.
Now at 100+ copies of 12 different cards.
Now at 12.83% owned of all his serial numbered cards.
Now at a total Beckett value of over $21,600.

The guy only has 82 different cards so to have 3,665+ is impressive

The coolest card related item I've seen in super collections are those pens used to sign the cards that were inserted as redemptions...like this one.

It's no secret I'm an Iowa Hawkeye collector, and Abdul Hodge is one of my three primary focuses. I really should scan my stuff of his someday.

How about a guy that collects nothing but MINI HELMET? AUTOGRAPH MINI HELMET.

Does he exist on our board?

kukocitb 01-10-2017 10:27 AM

that is AMAZING! I wonder if they did the autographics like that in other sports?

Charlie Frye here although only collect his rookie stuff from 2005. He was a local Ohio guy the Browns drafted in the 3rd round as the next in a long line of failed QB's but for part of that year I liked the way he played and decided to collect him. He didn't last long as he was traded and then disappeared but that made his cards so cheap (compared to what I was paying in 2005-06) that I just kept buying... and still am!
