It's shilled, manipulated and all faked! The consignors, the buying gang and the counterfeiters have all finally joined forces to bring the hobby down. We are seeing the final pump up before the whole thing falls apart and only cobra commander, destro, Gordon gekko, trump and the baroness will be left standing holding the cash!

Give the topic some time to grow in CONVERSATION. Jeez.....you know what I am sick and tired of this talk in general. Maildays, Price Checks topics, Show Off Picture topics........it all leads to the NEVERENDING BATTLE of shilled vs true market trends.

I feel like I cannot even post videos anymore.....I would dare not do a mailday on these forums. People would say I am hyping the card or player if I post a picture of my card(s) in more than one topic. Or there would be some guy with a conspiracy theory that people jump on too. Other people I've met privately on these forums through PM or in person have shared the same feeling....afraid to talk about cards or post maildays just to get critized or lead into a flame war. All I can say is the hobby is suppose to be about talking about sport and yes SHOWING OFF what you acquired and how you met nice people along the way.

GC1980 07-21-2016 09:22 PM

Sorry forgot to add (sarcasm) hahaha. It's been my theme of the day. Maybe if people read the nonsense I've been typing they will realize how dumb it is.

I personally feel the hobby is quite healthy and love seeing so much activity.

IronMonkey415 07-21-2016 09:23 PM

This is why I stop posting mail day, people think I'm shilling or hyping up my sales thread.

ThoseBackPages 07-21-2016 09:24 PM

i hear ya. i blame the Buyers Group for all of this

IronMonkey415 07-21-2016 09:24 PM

And then you have people that will come in and say 'WHAT MAIL DAY, YOU NEVER POST ANY MAIL DAY THREAD" that is when all hell break loose again.

Birdman 07-21-2016 09:27 PM

LOL what mail days? You never...NEVER, post maildays. EVER. I'm watching you like a hawk, bud.

Dont watch videos. Go out and do it if you feel the market is undervalued. I totally suggest taking your life savings or mortgaging your home and throwing it into vintage. I mean if you had done that 15 yrs ago like the examples in that video, you would have had 20,000% returns. Its a shoe in, whats there to think about? There is no risk, this stuff only goes up and never comes down. There is never less buyers, only more buyers over time. Its time we stop talking about it and went and did it.

I recommend buying PWCC high end certified. The best for the best. Dont worry if you pay more than market, it'll be worth multiple times that in a year or less. I would suggest paying more than the trending because that way you know for sure you'll get it and flip it and make a killing. Once you do it, make a mail day thread!

Don't think the hobby really is going up as a whole, but there is a concentration of funds seeking to go into certain cards. You look at what most of the boxes are selling for a year after release... It's definitely not a business that's booming

Yeah I think it would be much better if it wasn't a monopoly causing Panini to price their boxes outrageously when they hit the market. Competition is always better. I do still enjoy the hobby though.

I like cards.

rdleifriaf 07-22-2016 03:48 PM

I don't care if the hobby is going up or down. I just need y'all to keep breaking boxes and putting Nique cards on eBay.

I sort of feel the same way, but it does suck that 90s boxes are so expensive now. I really wish it was more affordable, nothing like busting those open.

This. We're blood sucking leeches really.

I think a nice niche market would be a business that buys/sells/trades rookie year sports cards. Like a website or such that offers exclusively all cards of a player from a rookie year. Or to trim it down more a business that deals strictly with base rookie year cards. Now that's a hobby that would be boomin'? People are all about the basic simple rookie cards eh?

I sold a Curry Classics (9.5) for $2000 a few months ago, notice the last one sold for like $850
But it’s really about the market explosion of the last few years. “We have seen a seismic shift,” Goldin says, “a tremendous influx of new collectors with high disposable income.”
I don't know if this is true for the hobby in general; maybe just the vintage rookie cards sector.

I have not been to any big card shows, but I don't see many new or younger collectors in card shops, trading meet ups, or forums here in the country. Maybe some that try hobby for a short while but don't stay long.

I think the main problem is the high entry cost of the hobby and the collecting community these days. Of course, there are the ever increasing box pack and prices, but there is also the widening gap in community appreciation and valuation between high-end cards and regular cards. This creates the seaming need to spend more and more to create a collection that is "worthy" of being appreciated in the hobby community; very discouraging for young and new collectors.

There are no shortage of young and new basketball and sport fans, but younger card hobbyists are now more drawn to gaming cards rather than sports cards. One reason I think is because in those games, cost of packs are lower and even the most common cards can still be on demand.

Having that said, maybe there are still ways to introduce kids to the hobby and bolstering their collection outright without much additional entry cost. One thing I can think of is maybe Panini can partner with companies like EA Sports and Nike to insert exclusive autograph or game used cards to their video games and sports apparel. Young sports fans already buys those things anyway, so not much additional cost to possibly obtain a nice collectible piece and trigger their interest on the hobby.

Cards are still up if you got the premium players in high grade.
