Rant. Grandmother's Doctor is Garbage.
 

So upset. The way my grandmother is being treated by the hospital is sickening. Im waiting for my father to talk with them before I take drastic measures and force her discharge.

Who would leave a frail elderly person over 24 hrs without eating or getting any type of nutritional substance intake

Wow, that is garbage. Sorry to hear how they are treating your Grandma, I'm sure that would make anyone upset. I hope you can resolve the problem quickly

Thanks, its frustrating trusting 'professionals' and end up knowing that even though not graduated from nursing school you would be doing a better job than them. Her week in the hospital is setting us back months of rehab that we have been doing at home.

Tell me about it. Recently my Grandmother called me concerned that she had food poisoning. A couple of days went by and it got worse. I finally made her go to the doctor and they diagnosed her with a stomach virus. Ok...she will be over it soon.

Next day she is in terrible pain and I'm worried about fluid loss so take her to the ER. Turns out to be a RUPTURED SMALL INTESTINE due to a bacteria infection. I think they call it Septis. They immediately took her back for emergency surgery. No waiting. She was so close to losing her life and her freaking MD mis-diagnosed it.

If they're really garbage, why did you take her there?

i feel for you OP, but as somebody that has worked in a hospital, is getting married to a nurse, and has a best friend that married a hospital nutritionist, there has to be a VERY good reason she is being held on this type of diet.


i'm not saying you are wrong, as there very well could be some gross negligence going on, but CHANCES are that she is on this specific diet due to some sort of procedure that she is going to have done, and it requires 24 hours of only clear fluids before it can happen. If she's due for some type of surgery, that could be the cause- as they don't want somebody to vomit food chunks while they are put under, as that can cause some serious problems while they are opened up on the table. Or maybe she's getting an abdominal scan done and want her bowels as empty as possible?

I'm not saying bad doctors don't exist.

This is why I think we need more context.

What hospital is she at? Is it a smaller place? A large hospital? University?

Something doesn't add up to me of someone simply not being fed for 24 hours if it's what I consider a hospital... without more information

Is there anyone in the family that can take care of her instead?

I know the feeling.
Our credit is going to take a hit for an ER bill that we are refusing to pay.
My wife and son walked in, filled out the info, son was given an ice pack for a large knot on his forehead (injured at water polo practice during school), waited almost 4 hours in waiting area, wife told them she was going to leave since they hadn't looked at him yet.
He goes into a room, doctor comes in and says he will OK.
Bill comes (after both our insurance and school insurance paid) = $800.
They charged [U][U]4 hours[/U][/U] of observation. :mad:

Each hospital should have an Ombudsman. They will investigate for you. we have had many bogus hospital bills overturned simply by writing a letter to the Hospitals Ombudsman.

So why is she there in the first place? Depending on why she is there, we often dont allow patients to eat for a day or even 3.
