2015 New York Mets season thread

So with the offseason thread...yeah, I thought that the time to post this was now. Only 40 days away until Spring Training so let's look at three big questions:

1. Can David Wright be David Wright?: Because when Day vud Right is Day vud Right, he's Mike Schmidt :D Seriously though, David Wright had his worst season since his rookie year and was meerly an average regular instead of a all-star calibur guy. Will he go back to being great or is this the beginning of a downfall?

2. Will our pitching go from good to majorly rad?: Mets pitching has been a strength for years now and got even better with the unexpected breakthrough of Jacob deGrom in 2014. Will Harvey be 100%? Will Wheeler go to the next plane? Will THOR! (god of thunder) be great right out of the get go?

3. Can the whole offense look major league worthy?: The Mets hugest obstacle is hitting like a major league team. Can Granderson hit a few more homers? Can Cuddyer go back to 2013 mode? Will d'Arnaud be the 2nd half or 1st half version from 2014?

In a seperate question, who do you think will break through in the minors for 2015? My picks are:

1. Marcos Molina: Recieved great praise for his work at Brooklyn in 2014 and will now head to the pitching friendly confines of Savannah. If he improves his curve or change, I think we have another #2 starter type.

2. Casey Mesiner: See above but probably more like a #3 starter. Has great balance for a tall lanky guy. Started off Brooklyn rough before getting it going the last few starts.

3. Wuilmer Beccera: Still very raw but he showed some interesting power in Kingsport. He's going to be fun to watch.

jewcer2k5 01-10-2015 01:59 PM

Finally a 2015 thread!!!!!

#2 in the bottom part...SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

metsplaya123 01-10-2015 02:02 PM

I don't know about wright, I want to see if he can stay healthy. He is a big guy but he is proving more and more to be fragile.

I don't think the big question with darnaud is his capability, we saw what he can do. It's also staying healthy. If he does he will be one of the best offensive catchers in the league. He won't be hitting 6th if he is.

I will pick conforto and matz to shine for 2015.

Is this really the new thread? I expect stars or some kind of excitement in the title for such a thread

sideout1212 01-10-2015 02:02 PM

Will Dom Smith at least hit double figure HR is another question to add. I hope Wright just stays healthy and bounces somewhat back. I doubt he is ever a .300/30/30 threat again but I'd take .300 with 20 HR. He's only done that one time in last six seasons so maybe wishful thinking.

Dom Smith's HR count doesnt matter one bit until he is getting close to the majors. If he develops solid gap power, he keeps his sweet line drive swing and his above average plate discipline he will be a stud.

At age 19 in LoA there was a player that had the following stat line.

195 AB - 45 hits, 8 2b, 1 HR, 20 RBI, 34 BB/64 K .231/.348/.287

Dom Smiths Line

461 AB - 125 hits, 26 2b, 1 HR, 44 RBI, 51 BB/77 K - .271/.344/.338

Same age, different league, crappier stadium...Do you wanna guess who the line at age 19 is that I didn't name?

Who had a SLG % .050 LOWER than Dom at the same age in the same level?

I'm sorry SIR, DID YOU ASK A QUESTION? I AM ANSWERING YOU!

You said it won't matter that he doesn't hit homers until he is close to the majors. You are correct. It won't matter for him or the mets.

It will matter for YOU though and other prospectors

If he doesn't hit homers his prices don't increase.

WAY TO TRY AND START ANOTHER USELESS ARGUMENT MAN, you must be a blast at parties.

metsplaya123 01-10-2015 02:16 PM

I will bet he hits more than 1 homerun this season

sideout1212 01-10-2015 02:19 PM

I understand he doesn't need to hit 25 hr to be ok but if he isn't able to hit any again I would be worried. Hence I said 10. Progression should lead to some going out.

How many did this star you pulled stats for hit out in his next 500 or so AB?
How many did this star you pulled stats for hit out in his next 500 or so AB?
Looks like 19 at age 20 between LoA (repeating the league) and HiA.

Looks like this player was doing well in R ball and got called up instead of starting the season at LoA.

But you still didn't answer the question.

This the exact problem I am talking about. I never asked anything about his prices or anything about it mattering for "me as a prospector". You created a random question in your mind that was off topic and answered it.

Please just answer the questions that are asked. Its like talking to a brick wall, do you really not realize that you do this?

I'm not going to guess at who the star is, ok I'll take one guess and say Delgado but:
1. you say he hit 19 next season and
2. examples of guys that have gotten much better doesn't change the fact that better numbers at any level = better probability of succeeding at the pro level. I understand your point that the power #s don't matter too much but you'd still prefer to see better #s.

So I don't think I'm being an idiot hoping for 10+ HR as a sign of future power potential.

I totally agree I want to see it. He was playing at least 1 level above his age last year and had an extremely solid middle of the season. Of course id love to see him smash 10 in April and move to AA and do it again. I'm just saying that with line drive hitters that have a good approach you just want to see that stick and develop.

Look at Nimmo. He was horrible in savannah and had a much better season after his promotion.

Delgado is incorrect.

Fwiw it was a player that I specifically searched for bc in my head/eyes it's a great comparison. Not Adrian Gonzalez either.

Well you follow prospects probably 100x times more than me so for me I'd just like to see easy evidence of progression but I get its not that important early on. At least narrow it down is it a current player? Goldschmidt? I'm assuming it's a high average guy at 1b.

How can anyone say that a .270 Cuddyer isn't a huge upgrade. Plus Granderson can't be any worse. We need him to hit at least 25hrs, .240 avg, and continue to walk.

2014:
LF
Avg-.219 (3rd worst in MLB)
Slg-.309 (worst in MLB)
Ops-.615 (2nd worst in MLB)
RBI-46 (2nd worst in MLB)
HR-6 (hahaha)(worst in MLB)

Not as bad, but that's hard to do
RF
Avg-.240 (7th worst in MLB)
Hr-19
Everything else (bottom half of the league)

Also, is a bad Matt Harvey better than a good Dillion Gee? Probably

Since we have no more guesses the answer is Joey Votto.

sideout1212 01-10-2015 03:46 PM

Ah Votto.

So if you had to what probability would you put on the Mets making the playoffs? I would say 20% or 5:1 odds and I'm being quite optimistic I think.

I'd say 33% right now. Really weak division.

enbambam6986 01-10-2015 04:03 PM

Do you guys believe the Marlins are better? I know metsplaya does, but is Morse that much better than Jones? Is prado that much better than McGehee? I know Gordan and Latos seem like huge pickups, but I still believe the Mets have a better team.

enbambam6986 01-10-2015 04:14 PM
What are the chances that Syndergaard starts at the beginning of the season?
Zero. Unless we trade gee, colon, and niece for tulo

metsplaya123 01-10-2015 04:34 PM

A lot of things have to roll right to make the playoffs, which is why the mets are fools for not doing much this winter

sideout1212 01-10-2015 04:58 PM

I think the Mets are ahead of the Marlins but are unlikely to catch Was or have a good enough record for a WC spot. Hence my 20%. A big move could change that but Metsplaya it is hard to do something big without increasing payroll.

Here is another q for you guys, who will have a better year Harvey or deGrom?

metsplaya123 01-10-2015 05:00 PM

All I wanted was for the mets to sign Robertson which would have added 10 million to the payroll and they could have traded mejia for a bat or prospect

Get a little creative

There is always an opportunity to upgrade a position

Metsfan1121 01-10-2015 05:04 PM

I'll be honest, I'm disappointed in the offseason moves but making deals for the sake of making deals is silly. If they look promising (specifically Harvey and Wright) in the first half, make a push at the deadline.

I agree, that seems to be the best time to trade pitching for a hitter.

metsplaya123 01-10-2015 05:07 PM

Couldn't they have atleast added a bullpen arm worth a dam? Guess not

enbambam6986 01-10-2015 05:19 PM

What other free agents would you guys have wanted besides Miller or Robertson? Kang?

I have said this many times, if I was Sandy I would want Eric young or Aoki on this team to add some speed.

sideout1212 01-10-2015 05:24 PM
Couldn't they have atleast added a bullpen arm worth a dam? Guess not
I think Mejia, Parnell, Familia, Montero makes for a nice young bullpen core. If there was money to spend, using it on the bullpen over the offense would have been a mistake IMO. You also have another starter to use in the pen as things stand, ie Gee.

I really hope Plawecki has a great spring and force D'arnaud into the outfield. Trade Daniel Murphy to get his $$ off the books, throw Flores into 2B and work a deal to get Reyes back from Toronto. Hit Wright #2 and tell him to focus on getting on base, and hitting the other way. he needs to give give up the ghost that he is going to be a big time run producer.

Lineup in my dreams

Reyes
Wright
Duda ( I know, we don't have a real #3 anyway, he does have a great eye.)
Granderson
Cuddyer
D'Arnaud
Flores
Plawecki

4-8 are all right handed but what can you do. Hopefully Conforto will be ready by the time Cuddyer breaks down and we will get more balance.

Granderson
Cuddyer
D'Arnaud
Flores
Plawecki

Hopefully in June, the Mets will be in first and Toronto will be in last so we can bring Reyes back to flushing.

I couldn't imagine Darnaud in the outfield. He might be worse than Murph and Duda, if thats possible. Also not a fan of Wright hitting 2nd.

Nothing to do with 2015, but if the Marlins suck, the Mets could be on top of the NL East for a long time...

Potential 2016 rotation:
Harvey, Wheeler, Degrom, Syndergaard, Matz, Niese

2016 Nationals:
Fister-free agent
Zimmerman-free agent
Desmond-free agent
Span-free agent
Clippard-free agent

Latos is also a free agent in 2016

I want desmond );;;;

Mets have invited 17 NRI's to ST. Here they are along with my brief thoughts about each and where they will go:
Buddy Carlyle RHP: Looked good in pen last year but up there in years. Has a chance
Zack Thornton RHP: Acquired in the Ike Davis deal. Probably not a late inning guy but could be MLB reliever. Will start in AAA.
Cody Satterwhite RHP: Great in AA but was 27 last year. AAA.
Tyler Pill RHP: 24 year old won't make team but could debut this year. Possible 7th inning guy.
Matt Bowman RHP: Really like Bowman. Think he starts in AAA but could make debut quick ala deGrom. Sleeper
Jon Velasquez RHP: AAA fodder
Chase Bradford RHP: AAA but will see him this year. I think he's got a chance to be a solid relief pitcher.
Scott Rice LHP: With a good ST, has a chance to be the second lefty out of the pen. Good in 2013 before injuries.
Johnny Monell C: AAA guy. Behind a few catchers.
Kevin Plawecki C: AAA but has starting catching potential. If d'Arnaud stays healthy, will be dealt by the deadline.
Xorge Carillo C: AAA. The heir apparent to Recker imo. Could be a similar backup type.
Brandon Allen IF: AAA but he's a legend there. A fun guy to watch if you are in Vegas.
Matt Reynolds IF: I think he goes to AAA but should make debut in 2015.
Danny Muno IF: See above.
Gavin Cecchini IF: AA. Debut in 2016? Should be solid average shortstop
Alex Castellanos OF: Organizational guy but would bet on him seeing time in MLB due to injuries.
Brandon Nimmo OF: AA. Should debut next year as well. One of the Mets top hitting prospects.

I wonder what it would take to get Addison Russell?

Desmond would be great but being he will be a free agent I wouldn't give up a big package for him. Id wait until next year for him.

Im at the end of my rope with the Wilpons. I despise them.

The final straw for me will be
1)if they do not sign the young studs when the time comes (Harvey, Wheeler, Degrom, Thor, Matz etc)
2) if they do not go out and sign a big time free agent when one becomes available and fits a need.

Desmond is going to get a 100 million dollar plus contract. The mets won't sign him and next year we will be even more pissed.

The only thing that has to happen this year to get me even more angry is if a deadline move isn't made or if the mets miss the playoffs again

They won't be keeping all the young stud arms so prepare yourself for that now. If we are one piece away then they will make that move IMO, but we are more than 1 piece away right now.

What if a deadline move is made (that you like, ie - trading pieces for a player that gets a season ending injury like Tulo or giving up our first round pick for a guy like Stephen Drew) and the Mets still miss the playoffs?

Well then maybe it's time to look up to the sky and ask why the mets are cursed.

I understand they will need to deal 1 maybe 2 of them but my point was if they do not re sign the pitchers they choose to keep...along with the players they bring in via trade ...it will be the last straw for me.

If they miss the playoffs, they miss the playoffs. They need to take chances and make moves at this point.

Really believe he's not available right now. Maybe deadline/2015 offseason he will. They shouldn't rush to trade him.

He is their shortstop of the future.

Castro is not

Great article

xbignick 01-15-2015 01:16 AM

"Well, what if the Mets offered second baseman Daniel Murphy, a player whom the Nats tried to acquire last July? And what if they sweetened their proposal with one prospect and took a second, lesser player back, considering that Desmond is more valuable than Murphy?"

What prospect? Very informative article as always Rosenthal. Just moved right over a part that would be key.

Was not taking a chance on Kang a mistake? Seems like he could have been a cheap gamble although 4 years is pretty long.
