Ordered a card. Paid $6.99 for shipping. He sent it eBay standard pwe. Total was under $20 with shipping, and arrived fine. But I think shitty he charged $7 for pwe. Or just be happy it arrived?

glen87 11-21-2025 03:26 PM

was a shipping method specified in the item?

Well I’m description no, but listing details yes

You can ask for partial refund for shipping since they failed to ship the way they advertised as thats the shipping that you were expecting. Do not mention feedback. If they do not give a partial on shipping then leave the feedback you feel they should get.

Never understood why people care how much the seller spent to ship a card (or anything else). Out of thousands of purchases I have never once looked at how much the seller spent on "shipping".

If I am happy with the total amount I paid for an item - I don't care how the seller breaks down the cost of the item on their end. They could charge $1 for the item and $100 for "shipping" and ship it in a PWE and I would not care as long as it arrives in the condition it was sold as.

If they are charging $6 shipping with USPS Ground Advantage specified and ship it PWE, that is against eBay rules. You cannot change the method of shipping advertised.

I don't understand why you wouldn't be unhappy if a seller did this to you.

Like I said, out of thousands of purchases I have never once looked at nor cared in any manner what it cost the seller to ship the item to me. Nor the method they shipped it IF it arrives as advertised.

When I buy an item, I calculate the shipping cost into what I am willing to pay. Does not matter how a seller wants to break down the total cost on their end - I am paying the same no matter what.

If one seller lists a card for $20 and free shipping, and another lists the exact same card for $10 plus $10 shipping, and you buy both. Are you going to complain to the seller who charged $10 for shipping because it only cost them $5 to mail it? Makes no sense... You paid the same for both cards in the end.

I can understand your point, but I do like it more in the case where the seller is at least still shipping using the method stated in listing.

For example. Seller charges $15 for shipping, ground advantage stated in listing. They send it ground adv, actual cost is more like $8. Ok that’s whatever….price is baked into the total anyway, doesnt matter how it’s broken down, you are buying the item knowing it’s total, and it is correctly advertised.

What I don’t like about the OP case is it’s false advertising. The baked into total thing doesnt quite apply the same because we wouldnt be comparing two correctly advertised listings for the same total, one is false advertising. Sure it’s just in the method of transit- and some don’t care, that’s fair- but still false advertising. And it does just kinda seem slimy if a seller is putting ground advantage on all their listings at $6.99 and sending pwe/ESE. Method may not matter to some but it seems like ESE has a slightly higher chance to go lost etc compared to ground adv (at least it does for me in the past). The card got there in the end making that a moot point, but it’s after the fact.

I dunno…my vote is it’s not a great look for the seller (if they refuse to refund anything after inquiring). Not sure if it deserves a neutral or not, it arguably does but OP would have to make that call. One neutral probably does next to nothing and it’ll show up on your feedback left for others. I try to reserve any non-positive feedback for just truly bad transactions…in this case I’d probably just refrain from leaving any feedback at all, as I wouldn’t leave a positive for this.

Personally I make a decision on someone's shipping price and item price combined, and I typically don't care if someone charges $5 or $10 for a shipping service as long as the total price works.

This is different IMO, it's charging for one delivery service and using a much cheaper and less secure one.

If you go to a restaurant and order a $40 steak, and you get a $5 hamburger patty, would you accept them saying you got something to eat from a cow, what’s it matter?

Or do you expect to get what you paid for?

Except in the case of your analogy, they enjoyed their $40 steak. It just took 45 minutes to arrive and was brought to the table by Bruno the cook, wearing an apron and no shirt. Not a great look for the restaurant but they ultimately received what they ordered.

Huh? That is a completely different scenario.

That would be the OP buying a $40 card and getting a completely different card worth only $5 instead.

Of course that would be an issue.

The OP got their correct "steak" - but just carried to the table in a different manner than expected as esoxwaters said above.

It’s more about getting what you pay for. On eBay youre paying not just for the item but also the method of delivery. That’s not always as trivial as how a dinner is brought out to the table by a chef or waiter etc. When it comes to transit across the country and when some methods (ESE or PWE) seem to run higher risk of getting lost, delayed etc. I have one of those going on right now- see my next post.
+1

But it’s not just the shipping cost…although that alone is a bit deceptive. It’s also false advertising of a shipping method.

Have a very similar situation to the OP.

Seller had $9.99 shipping and listed as Ground Advantage, a tracked shipping service.

It has been over a week since I purchased, so I went to check if it was shipped. Seller marked it merely “Shipped-untracked”. So I have no tracking to go off of to know where this is, if it was shipped or anything. This is for…I repeat…a card that was charged $9.99 shipping with an advertised tracked shipping. Which would have probably gotten here by now if actually sent ground adv on the date they marked shipped. Now we’ll have to see how many more days it’ll be waiting for this card which will presumably show up in a PWE if it does at all.

According to a few posters above that is entirely a normal and satisfactory transaction. I do not agree and think that’s a pretty poor (and deceptive) way of selling on eBay.

I agree with it being a poor (and deceptive) way of selling anywhere. I see no problem with a neutral or neg feedback and even asking for a partial refund. Giving feedback warns other and if they do not like him doing it. They will not buy form him.

There are buyers if they pay for tracking and do not get it feel it is OK to keep the item and ask for a total refund stating they did not receive the item. Feeling it is OK to rip off someone who is ripping off others.

Just way too many people thinking way too many ways, so there is no normal anymore.

Yep. I started a message dialogue with the seller- he’s a newish seller with 30 feedback. I’m trying to be helpful to him, coming from a 25+ year experience on eBay. Told him not only is this not a normal way to transact on eBay, but there will be buyers who will just claim INR since there’s no proof of delivery (making it clear I’m honest and will let him know if it arrives, but not everyone will be)

I usually will let things slide…but man this is pushing it charging $9.99 to ship in a < $1 PWE. I still don’t have the card. First he said the shipping cost was stated upfront (I explained about the Ground Adv tracked shipping being falsely advertised but not sure he got that). He proceeded to send a screenshot of the breakdown in transactional fees, saying he has to charge a lot for shipping because selling fees are so high. I told him it is not the role of the buyer to pay for FVFs…that’s why they are called selling fees. I’m a seller myself…I don’t pass those fees onto the buyer with overcharged falsely advertised shipping. Nowhere in all of this did he once offer to partially refund any surplus shipping costs, and im not gonna directly ask him for a partial refund, which doesn’t look good to eBay. But I’m giving him ample opportunity to make it right…he doesn’t seem to want to though. If the card ever does come, not sure what I’ll do. It certainly deserves a non-positive feedback, but it takes a lot for me to leave that.

Take the Elsa approach and "Let it go." It's kind of crappy but it actually puts more risk on the seller since a lot of those ESEs don't get scanned. If card is in advertised shape, then perhaps just avoid any feedback. If the seller asks for feedback, then you can explain.

My card did finally show up today. Came in a PWE (not ESE), for a listing charging $9.99 ground adv shipping. I’m probably just not gonna leave feedback but I would totally understand anyone leaving non-positive feedback for that.

Totally. I believe you can report the seller for policy violation since sellers are required to use the shipping service the buyer selected during eBay checkout. I'd go that route versus feedback.

This sellers approach is the reason we pay FVF on shipping. It was a PITA when ebay did it to us years ago and this seller is a clown. The fact he overcharged for shipping and did not even ship with tracking is a poor excuse.

I know I'm late to the horse beating, but if the seller is going to talk to you about the cost of doing business- then I believe its up to you about the cost of doing business by not shipping tracked on ebay. While the Final Value Fees are high, a "lost" product and a refund is more costly. It might fix his behavior or give him pause in the future.

Thats if you want to be petty about him getting defensive.

Def not good, tracking should always be added for that much and insured. You have a couple days yet, but I would not wait to much longer to file.

Was it the B orr Auto?

If so the seller selling as much as they are should know better regardless of FB.

It was a Clear Cut Canvas Lukas Dostal Auto. Very cool photo of him in the tunnel before the game.

Frustrating as I'm more interested in the card than the cash.

thenightman 01-15-2026 10:32 PM

Had a seller ship a ground advantage package in an envelope. What say y'all? You leaving a negative or a neutral? Personally, I'm thinking neutral. It was a $90 card. How do you not put that in a bubble mailer? It feels very careless.

paparoke 01-16-2026 03:40 PM

Since the card wasn't damaged, I would just put in the feedback that you were overcharged shipping. And when you rate the seller, you can give them 1 star for shipping cost.

You won't find a consensus here but I'm of the opinion that if a certain specific shipping method is listed, that's the way it should be shipped. I don't know why people give eBay users slack they wouldn't give to other websites - if I buy something off Topps and pay for two day shipping, if they ship it Ground, I'm requesting a refund for the difference.

On eBay it only gets sticky if they have a generic shipping method but if it says Advantage, or Priority, etc. and that's what I pay for, and they ship a cheaper method, I'm going to message them to see if they will do anything to fix it and if they don't I think that's worth a neutral even if the card came safely. To me there is a difference between over-charging shipping and not shipping the paid for method. If I knowingly pay $20 for shipping, and I get the package shipped the correct method but it was $6, that's just on me and something I can factor in when purchasing the item.

So you paid for GA and he/she shipped using the GA shipping service, but shipped in a PWE type envelope and the card arrived undamaged? Neutral would be understandable, personally I probably wouldn't leave any but would let them know he/she needs to do better.

This is the most accurate interpretation. I paid for GA and they shipped GA, but they shipped in an envelope. The card arrived undamaged, but I don't feel it should be glossed over.

I definitely let them know they should do better and that I won't be buying from them again. Leaving nothing is suitable. I felt a negative was too strong because it came back undamaged. I wanted to see what others thought. Thanks!
