De Niro or Pacino
Who do you think is the better actor/has the better filmography?
When De Niro gives the guy that vicious shoeing in The Irishman it just might be his greatest performance. |

I prefer DeNiro by a fair amount but he’s definitely been in some bad movies the last 20 years or so. Like many guys my age I’m a huge fan of both. Seeing them face off in Heat is still a treat to watch.

Nah hes from a newer era; by the time he made his film debut let alone became a star De Niro and Pacino already had numerous classics under their belt. If you’re looking for a third I’d take Jack Nicholson. Maybe Gene Hackman. Or Dustin Hoffman. |
De Niro but Pacino had more varied roles.
|
Man this is tough. I think I gotta go Bobby, but Scarface is just such a great performance...
|
Pesci and it’s not even close.

Jack would be a good choice for their contemporary but he wouldn’t finish 3rd. |

I voted De Niro but Pacino in "Scent of a Woman" is an all time favorite.
Heat another all time favorite minus the ending. |

The great DeNiro movies:
Mean Streets Godfather II Taxi Driver Deer Hunter Raging Bull King of Comedy Once Upon A Time In America Brazil Angel Heart The Untouchables Midnight Run Goodfellas Awakenings Cape Fear Mistress A Bronx Tale Casino Heat Jackie Brown Meet The Parents Stardust Machete Silver Linings Playbook Joker The Irishman Amsterdam Killers of The Flower Moon The great Pacino movies: Godfather Serpico Godfather II Dog Day Afternoon Scarface Dick Tracy Glengarry Glen Ross Carlito's Way Heat Donnie Brasco Devil's Advocate Angels in America Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood The Irishman Both of them have plenty of other good movies besides the standouts above. DeNiro's list is a longer, but he tends to take more supporting roles, which helped with that, as have his multiple collabs with Scorsese. Even so, Al has 9 movies in various stages of production compared to just 5 for Bob, so there's still time to catch up. They are both national treasures. May they live forever. |
Damn those two lists are full of effing fantastic movies!
Now all Hollywood makes are awful Disney remakes, ever worsening Star Wars films and stupid comic book movies. |

I’m currently reading his recently released memoir Sonny Boy and it’s pretty darn good so far! |
Yeah, much like Paul Newman finally getting one for "The Color of Money".
It's been awhile since I've seen those two Pacino movies, and I've only seen them once, but I remember them as good movies. I'll watch them again at some point. |
Pacino!
|
Nah, it's definitely De Niro -- he's been much more versatile and varied.
When you think of Pacino, you mainly think of Godfather and Scarface. When you think of De Niro, you're thinking of his long partnership with Martin Scorsese -- Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino. Then he had other iconic films, like Godfather II, Heat (also Pacino), The Untouchables, The Deerhunter, Ronin, etc. |
De Niro but Pacino had more varied roles.
De Niro helped popularize method acting -- he transformed himself for several films. |
It’s the same movie.

Remember that movie De Niro played that soft spoken, cowardly introvert?
What was the name of that movie? I can’t remember. |

I love De Niro but Pacino takes this one!

He was also given accolades for being willing to cut his hair in that distinctive fashion and wear it like that all through filming, even off the set, but really, that doesn't compare to the significant weight gains and losses he endured to play Jake LaMotta and Al Capone. |
Ronin is a fantastic film IMO
A small movie but incredibly entertaining to me. I can’t get on board with Pacino over DeNiro. Smaller, less heralded roles like in Ronin, This Boys Life, Midnight Run, mad Dog and Glory etc set an incredible run of diverse characters through many genres, that are unbeatable in this matchup. Especially from mid 80s through mid 90s. Again, opinions vary and it is art after all. As groundbreaking and influential as the Beatles were, the Stones kicked the crap out of entire decade after they broke up and are the better band for me too. |
Just shooting from the hip.......
The Intern with De Niro is sneaky good--especially if you are an old dude like me. The transformation of Pacino's character from GF 1 through GF 2 is pretty impressive. Innocent young man to cold blooded. Can I bring Gene Wilder or Peter Sellers into the discussion? And Jack in Cuckoos Nest? Brilliant. Nothing better in my honest option. There are at least 6 scenes in that movie could of won him best actor on their own.. |
