Official 2024-25 NBA Season Thread
A few news stories have already happened for the new season, so I figured it was time to have an official thread.
Here's to a healthy and entertaining 2024-25 NBA season. Just saw the Cavs hired Kenny Atkinson. I think it's a great hire. He did a really nice job in Brooklyn and was pretty shocked he hadn't gotten a head coaching gig since then. |
Cavs have one of the most interesting/potentially transformative (for better or worse) offseasons in the NBA coming up.
A few major decisions to be made now |
Hiring Atkinson seems like a good move for Cleveland
|
I think Atkinson is an upgrade over JB but he’s still pretty meh. I’m not sure with how the roster is currently constructed how you’re going to make an offense out of this.
I really don’t think Mobley and Allen can share the floor. You could probably make Mitchell & Garland work with a lot of off ball movement but you need one of your bigs to shoot for that to work. |
I figured Allen would be traded but maybe not with the Atkinson hiring
[Wojnarowski] The Cavaliers are especially eager for Atkinson's player development program to impact young 7-footer Evan Mobley, sources said. Atkinson has a strong history with Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert from their time together with the Nets.
|

Everything I've heard this offseason points to the failure of a plan to get Mobley involved more in the offense year 3 was a big part of why they got rid of JB. He managed LESS shots per game this year (down to 11.0 from 12.0) despite improvements in every offensive category: |
Would trading Mitchell and Allen mean missing the playoffs? Because that could mean 2-3 lottery picks in the next few years with a better developed Mobley.
Seems like a one step back, two steps forward move. |
Geoff, Zo says he back and ready to get it.

You figure you can probably get 3+ 1sts and a player for Mitchell and maybe a 1st and a player for Allen? I’m fine if you want to develop Mobley but then you’re also going to need to get lucky via the draft and hope that in 3 years you’ve got a playoff team |
Woj Bomb: Mikal Bridges going to the Knicks for 4 (!!!) unprotected 1st plus a pick swap and a conditional pick. Bogdanovic being traded to match salaries.
|
Also, Houston working on a deal to have 3 of the next 5 Suns 1st rounders. Rumors are they are going after KD/Booker.
|
Woj bomb for bridges lol

first domino falls, Nova Knicks on their way |
how can Zach edey not be a top 10 pick?
some random French kid is #1:confused: his ceiling is probably donny d at most. |
how can Zach edey not be a top 10 pick?
some random French kid is #1:confused: his ceiling is probably donny d at most.
Because he’s slow, can’t shoot, and can’t defend outside of 3ft. It’s easy to score a bunch of points when you’re 7’4 playing against a bunch of dudes who are 6’9. He’s going to get played off the floor so fast. Totally unplayable in any important game. He got absolutely torched by UConn guards in the championship |
Bridges to Knicks. Wait, let me create a whole thread about that.
|
My draft big board finalized (I think):
1. Z Risacher 2. S Castle 3. M Buzelis 4. C Williams 5. D Clingan 6. R Sheppard 7. T Salaun 8. A Sarr 9. D Carter 10. D Knecht |
something big brewing for Houston?
[Windhorst] If the Rockets take Donovan Clingan... another center... that would potentially enable them to make Alperen Sengun...available in a type of trade today going in front of the Suns, the Rockets are full go to improve dramatically now…and that’s why they did this trade now

[Scotto] Houston is continuing to seek upgrades to help the team improve now, and Rockets coach Ime Udoka remains a fan of his former Celtics player, Marcus Smart, on the Grizzlies, league sources told HoopsHype.
Is the end goal FVV-Smart-KD-Jabari Smith-Clingan ?? Interesting squad if so. |
Sengun going the way of Sabonis if true...both are Jokic light, both potentially booted from their drafted team too early (although Sabonis was playing pf, since Turner was the C)
|

Shepard is probably the best, but 6'2.

Yeah I'm well aware Sarr is going top 3, kudos to whatever coaching staff wants to take on that project, it will be interesting. There is a nonzero chance he becomes a minor star, and the only guy I'd absolutely avoid out of the top lottery names is probably Holland. |

Nonzero chance he becomes a minor star is a mind bender |
Nonzero chance he becomes a minor star is a mind bender
what do you like about him aside from measurements? He's extremely raw, looks lost quite often in PnR. Has makings of an outside shot but it needs a lot of work to be useful in NBA. He's somewhere on the spectrum between a Mobley and Willie Cauley-Stein but much closer to WCS methinks. It's all going to depend on how hard he works as a pro, which is hard to predict. |
here we go, things are getting spicy already
• The Golden State Warriors are prepared to trade for Paul George and offer him a full four-year max contract, per @WindhorstESPN
|

Scoring, Playmaking, defensive upside w/ his build. Not so sure about the feel for the game but he's a basketball lifer. His grandparents, both parents played professionally. So he's got a leg up on basically everybody else. |

I hate Castle's shooting but his defense is legit, only reason I have him at 2, and I wouldn't fault anyone for having Buzelis there or even 1st. Risacher is simply best combo of floor and ceiling to me. And as we can all see by what the Knicks just paid for minor star Bridges, 2-way wings are extremely valuable. |
Wouldn’t mind Alpy going to the Suns.
|
It's insane to me that the Suns might say no to Sengun + 2-3 of his picks for KD. Specially if they can get some additional role players.
They just got swept, the team is gonna get worse next season, they have a chance to be better AND get their picks back...and they say no? |
The Rockets would be crazy to include Sengun in that trade. He’s by far their best player and there’s no guarantee KD can even stay healthy at this point in his career
|
Blazers gonna draft another guard and I'm going to cry
|

I think Buzelis would be a great fit on the Hawks, even if they don't trade Dejounte. Trae/Dejounte/(Buzelis/Risacher)/JJ/OO seems like a really solid lineup. |
Blazers gonna draft another guard and I'm going to cry
Could be worse...Magic could be drafting another guard lol |
The last couple of draft nights have seen very little trades so let's hope tonight we see something different.
|
here we go, things are getting spicy already
Why go young when you can go older? |
Wonder if Pacers can pull off an Andrew Nembhard or a Ben Shepard.
|
word on the streets is now that Woj had bad intel and is backtracking on KD being made available... lol. Wonder if this upsets KD enough that he asks out. It really is the smart move for them to rake in the assets now but pride will likely prevent that and Suns seem likely to stay wading in the purgatory end of the pool.
Gambadoro] on the Suns trading Kevin Durant: “Last tweet before this plane I’m on leaves - this is a joke! There is zero chance this happens - ZERO”
|
clingan seems to be pretty good. I'd take him over some random French kid. should see edey and Knecht round out the top 10.

“Random French Kid” is a wild statement That’s all |
Free agent F OG Anunoby intends to sign a five-year, $212.5 million contract to return to the New York Knicks, sources tell ESPN. Deal will include a player option and a trade kicker.
|
PG is a massive upgrade over Klay at this point.
Klay can find a better role elsewhere. Wiggins can get dumped also and GS can grab a big for him. HOU would be out of their minds to trade Sengun. Dude could be Pau Gasol on a chip squad. Man did NY overpay for Bridges. Solid squad but I don't see them as a contender unless there's another move coming. Intrigued what Philly do to keep Embiid happy who must be close to wanting a change of scenery. And what will the Spurs do to keep Wemby happy and competing this season instead of that horrific tank job the first 50 games. Dallas also need to make moves. They should actually being going after PG and trade PJ and whatever else. |

Currently, PG13 is an upgrade over Klay. How much depends on his health. However, depleting depth for him doesn't really get the Dubs to where they need to be IMO. |
Someone please tell me Deni Avdija is a good player...
|
good move for Portland
[Adrian Wojnarowski] The Washington Wizards are trading F Deni Avdija to the Portland Trail Blazers for Malcolm Brogdon and the 14th pick tonight and 2029 pick, sources tell ESPN.
|
Am I the only one who thinks Alex Sarr’s brother is Nipsey reincarnated??
|
Go Hawks. No way they mess it up again.
|
Topps now cards tonight who will not have autos next year in panini
|
a can congrats
|
Really solid pick for the Hawks. I think he’s one of the couple guys who have a #1 ceiling.

I'm just now a bit nervous of a trade lol. But so far so good. Have fun in DC Sarr. |
Who the heck could the Rockets possibly take here.
|
Reed Sheppard.
Bye bye Jalen. I think the Rockets are gonna be really interesting if they can trade Green |

I like Anunoby. But that is a lot of money for a guy who's played more than 50 games once in the last 4 years. |
Matas to the spurs would be unfair

The problem is that FVV is making > $40m a year. Gonna be tough to trade that |

Oof, that is a crazy overpay. OK Pistons on the clock. |
Castle will actually pass to Wemby so that's good. I think he will be a million times better than Sheppard

I suppose they could for Simmons' expiring contract if they really want to see what an Amen+Reed backcourt can do from day 1. That would be doing FVV dirty though unless there's another team involved. |
I actually like the Pistons pick.
Taking a big risk tho. |

Yea I’m not sure how all the salary matching will work now with all the new restrictive apron rules. |
I actually like the Pistons pick.

I'm not big on Holland, like the Salaun pick for Charlotte though
|
Three French players in the top six. One G League. Two college players.
|
This 8 will be interesting
|
Portland killing it.
Deni is ready to be a star and draft a guy that can be a DPOY in the NBA. Scoot played great the last quarter of the season so things are looking good in Portland. |
Yea the trailblazers are kind of interesting again lol
|
Don’t like the Dillingham pick at all. I don’t see how he’s gonna be a productive NBA player
|
2 PGs
Who runs the offense? |
Buzelis falling wow
