Jackson Holliday

Called up for debut tonight against the Red Sox! Maybe in Series 2, very lucky and addition to Update instead though. Hope he tears it up.

cbeauch87 04-10-2024 02:14 PM

2024 Update and Update Sapphire just got a big boost.

I actually enjoy when prospects come up early but late enough to actually limit the amount of rookie cards.

Destroyed AAA in a SSS. He looks like the real deal.

The comp is....nobody. Can't think of one. Maybe A-Rod?

Craziest thing is that his brother Evan is expected to be even better than he is. Quite the baseball legacy Matt has built.

Ryan Spilborghs and Cory Sullivan (both former Rockies and team mates of Matt) do play by play for Rockies games and tell stories about babysitting Jackson during their playing days. It's good listening.

ThoseBackPages 04-10-2024 06:44 PM

Topps NOW!

splitrockgamer 04-11-2024 09:24 AM

Have to admit, I have never seen the number 1 highlight be a weak ground out to second. Are we over hyping this kid just a smidge?

ctcardexchange 04-11-2024 05:54 PM

Topps jacked up the prices on the Topps now cards. Instead of $89.99 for 20 cards, it $129.99. Talk about greed! I bet print run suffers. That's ridiculous. $6.50 per card!

IronCladLou 04-11-2024 07:28 PM

He'll be awesome, but sell to me at cents on the dollar ;)

Wow they really did bump up the price for his first card. But we live in the world of degenerate gamblers print run won’t suffer.Everybody is looking to get the Chase cards on this one.

The guy who was DFA'd to bring up Jackson Holliday played college ball at Vanderbilt. His hitting coach? Josh Holliday (Matt's brother and Jackson's uncle). Kemp tweeted about seeing Jackson hit when he was *5* lol. Full circle.

Glad people are at least seeing how good Carson Williams could be.
But thats crazy. I own no cards of him but $600 for a base auto!
When Carson Williams is like $100.

Hope he does good but i think we will have a weird case with this like with the yankees a few years ago.
When everybody was chasing Jasson Dominguez and paying insane prices for break spots and his cards. All while Volpe was selling for nothing then Volpe became the chase.
Cause there is this rookie in Baltimore right now named Colton Cowser that people should be paying more attention to imo.

You just said people should look at another player besides Holliday, but Holliday has only had 7 ABs. Cowser hit .115 in 60 ABs….

24 isn’t old, but it’s 4 years older than 20.

Absknicks 04-13-2024 12:42 AM

Has already misplayed multiple popups and looks completely lost at the plate. Obviously, it's only 11 PA so not time to panic but he could be further away than initially thought.

Reminds me of Pete Crow-Armstrong last season. Didn't play much... couldn't get a hit and made a couple defensive mistakes. Had a couple defensive gems too.

14 ABs 0 hits 3 runs scored

jhssketchcards 04-13-2024 03:29 AM

Makes we wonder if having Matt as a dad is baked into the hype. If his last name were Willis or Dontenot I don’t think there would have been the build up. He would have been able to truly develop in the minors before being called up so fast. Sometimes I think teams screw up this kind of thing. I think he will be ok long term, but you never know what this sort of struggle does to young players.

Nice story in the Washington Post this morning about how the O’s let him wear his preferred #7 - Cal Sr.’s number - by talking it over with Cal Jr. on Thursday morning. Is free on Apple News for the next 6-12 hours.

Story notes that it took Cal Jr. till his 4th game to get a hit and went 3-for-32 to start his career.

oldgoldy97 04-13-2024 07:32 AM

Possibly bad mojo taking 7.

cardsin47 04-13-2024 10:12 AM

The decision was made to call him up / it’s done. He’s just got to work thru the typical adjustment period to hit in The Show. The level of pitching he’s facing now is a different animal ….

ThoseBackPages 04-13-2024 10:16 AM

Wait, wait, wait…
You mean these ultra, can’t miss, sure fire Bowman 1st Top Prospects who have amazing BC autos and who are top 5 studs based on minor league pitching and the “eye tests” of advanced scouts, actually struggle??? lol
Of course they do. It’s part of it.

Even the best prospects bust at a high rate in MLB. If you're counting on them all to turn out to be great MLB players, you're going to end up wrong way more often than not.

In the short term I think Holliday's MLB production will be underwhelming. Not a great base stealer and has below average power at the moment. He should grow into the power and hopefully develops better instincts on the basepaths but all the eye popping stuff that gets the casuals' blood pumping is lagging a bit in his game right now.

hermanotarjeta 04-13-2024 04:48 PM

This is what happens when people “invest” near $1000 for base chrome autos before players even get to the majors. Ask Fatty fans.

Blame Mike Trout on this one.

On one hand I believe he will be fine, on the other hand if I'm up big already I'm selling now and trying to buy back in a few weeks from now.

If you believe in Holliday long term the best possible thing is him struggling this year to present another buying window. His prices have been high for the last 18 months, a little correction is welcome.

He is also 20 and has had 11 ABs - Adley & Gunnar both struggled early as well. Elias talked about it yesterday in his presser
