No way they can afford anyone else, can they? I really want to know how this is structured, it can't be 70m per, can it?

Dodgers: no way we’re getting swept by the Diamondbacks in the playoffs again. How much you want?

hermanotarjeta 12-09-2023 03:18 PM

Ohtani wants a ring.

I’m a dodgers fan. Love that we got him. But curious about how this impacts rest of roster construction. Will we just eat the luxury tax for the next X years????

He will be paid more per season than 8 teams paid their entire roster this year.

vinson24 12-09-2023 03:25 PM

First, lol. I mean this contract is horrible. 700 million dollar player whose already had two surgeries, and may just be a DH. I get that he will sale some jerseys but with how much players get hurt these days, just way too much risk based on the rewards.

Guy is a great player but 700 million is just dumb

NCWolf 12-09-2023 03:25 PM

I hate that teams can just defer this for decades. It’s such crap.
Seems reckless for a pitcher with two TJ surgeries. Best hope he recovers well.
The other owners have to be saying wtf are you doing dodgers. Now guys asking for 500 for 10 will look reasonable.

Most of the contract will be differed so the Dodgers can continue adding pieces apparently

Halonut 12-09-2023 03:27 PM

As much as I hate to see Shohei leave, especially up the 5, the Angels dodged a bullet here. 10 year deals never age well and the back half of this one is going to be fugly.

eye4talent 12-09-2023 03:31 PM

I just want to give a shoutout to my former high school classmate/teammate, Andy Friedman, for doling out the largest contract ever—and hopefully tanking the Dodgers in the process.

(It might take a few years, and they might win a couple World Series titles, but dog gonnit, the Dodgers will eventually collapse!)

Pujols 2.0. The Dodgers still lack pitching and will come up short in the postseason.

A leverage play, perhaps? Or money.

Jays were probably looking mighty tempting at $600 million, but how could he pass up $700 mil?

We can’t say he’s “like Cole” until we see how he comes back in 2025.

JoinerCP 12-09-2023 03:43 PM

What would it take for Ohtani to be "worth it"? Some of the posters saying it was a bad move by LA, etc.

Would two more consensus MVPs be worth it? 1 WS ring? 2? What if he's in the top 10 hitters for the next 6 years?

theshowandme 12-09-2023 03:43 PM

Imagine the amount of cards Shohei could buy if he had the addiction like the rest of us
Shohei basically is Cole and Judge combined.
Except he is worse pitcher than Cole and he is worse position player than Judge.

And Cole/Judge don't force you to use a 6-man rotation or clog the DH permanently.

It’s more about drawing eyeballs to the Dodgers for the next decade. People will tune in to watch him, the Dodgers will go deep into the postseason frequently, and they now have a strong share of the Japanese market.

That’s what it’s about more so than specific accomplishments.

what scares me most about MLB is that the younger generation doesn't have the same interest ... they gravitate to the NBA ... NFL MLB and you may as well throw the NHL in there too are going to feel the lack of interest in the next few years ...

It's not.

If Michael Jordan announced a return to the NBA, do you think he'd get the veteran minimum (on par with his current talent)? Or would he command a lot more?
