Was never a fan of any team he pitched for but he always seemed like a really nice guy.

I heard about Schilling revealing Wakefield having brain cancer a couple days ago. 57 years old, thanks for the fantastic memories Tim.
His wife Stacy is battling pancreatic cancer too, not fair...

Wow. Sad. RIP.

RIP... was cool to watch a knuckle baller as a kid. I'm sure he inspired tons of kids to learn to throw it. Those Red Sox teams were always fun to watch.

This one hurts.
You would be hard pressed to find someone to say a bad word about Wakefield. He was the ultimate professional on the field and off. He took the young players under his wing and taught them the correct way to do things.
He did whatever was asked of him on the field.
Off the field and after his playing days were over he worked tirelessly with the Jimmy Fund and the Red Sox Foundation.

I was at Tim Wakefields second career start for the Pirates. Went with 2 of my high school buddies who were Pirates fans. Love how he faced a setback at 1B and was able to achieve a solid mlb career after a minor league coach had him experiment with throwing knuckleballs. Sorry to see him leave so soon. Rest in peace.

Worst part is today is the annual Jimmy Fund walk to end childhood cancer in Boston. And we found out while it was going on. :(

I’ll admit I did not but even still if he leaked the news it’s weird for people to be ranting about Curt Schilling in a thread about a beloved knuckleballer passing away far too young. But hey people love to be outraged and rant as opposed to being positive.

Another Yankees fan who had nothing but respect for Tim and watching him pitch. RIP!

I feel so bad for his children. His wife has terminal pancreatic cancer and probably pass in the next month! 2 parents in 2 months is devastating

Hopefully, you can find it in your "heart" to forgive "weird" people for not being purely positive when a 57 year old man, a pillar of his community and his family, succumbs to cancer, but instead of dying with the quiet dignity that marked his life, his last 3 days were instead spent fielding calls from people who shouldn't have known how grave his condition was, and would not have except that someone who should not have been speaking out of turn did exactly that.

Tim was from Melbourne, FL, where I lived a good part of my life. He meant so much to this community as well and was already giving back before he was well-known. I know this is long, so I apologize, but here’s an excerpt from the local paper.

“He was an inspiration to the kids at the Space Coast Early Intervention Center (now called Space Coast Discovery)in Melbourne, where he helped raise more than $5 million from his own donations and from 25 years as host of a celebrity golf tournament at Suntree Country Club, where celebrities from all walks of life played and donated items to be auctioned.

As a high school student, Wakefield took advantage of the opportunity to volunteer at the Early Intervention Center. He was so amazed at the services they provided to their students that he made a commitment to the founder, Betsy Farmer, that he would help.

Even though I’m not too far behind him in age, I still aspire to be even half the man that he was off the field.

Prayers go out to his family - I remember trying to throw a knuckleball just like him in Little League growing up.

Wakefield was 11-3 when he made his only All-Star Game in 2009, becoming the second-oldest player — to Satchel Paige — ever selected to his first All-Star Game. Wakefield was the oldest player in baseball at 45 when he earned his 200th win in September of 2011, retiring his final six batters.

He announced his retirement the following spring training, seven wins short of breaking the franchise record for wins held by Clemens and Young.

“I’m still a competitor, but ultimately I think this is what’s best for the Red Sox,” he said at the time. “I think this is what’s best for my family. And to be honest with you, seven wins isn’t going to make me a different person or a better man.”

I loved watching him pitch as I was one of very few people I'd ever met that could throw a knuckler!

I'll be polite and say you are very fortunate to have never had the burden of informing friends, family or the public of a loved one's terminal illness.

That was extremely sensitive, and private, information that the family didn't want to be public. They wanted to grieve and come to terms with his diagnosis and death in private. He took that from them.

I get where you're coming from. But it's very hard to give someone like Schilling the benefit of the doubt, given his track record. Even if he did it to encourage 'prayers', as he said, it's still hard for me to determine whether he was sincere, or if he did it for podcast content.

There are many other athletes who, if they did the same thing, I could trust did it with anything but crass intentions (even if it still would be wrong of them to do). Schilling is not one of those people.

Your choice of words when someone passes away tells me exactly what you are. If I'm reading right this thread was referring to Tim Wakefield's passing nothing about Schilling. I guess Schilling must have had it out with the Beauch household at some point.

I still remember this one, not because I watched it, but because I heard the pitch count at some later point. 172. He went 10 innings for the win, throwing 172 pitches.

It was noble for Schilling to want to pray for the Wakefield family. The problem is that they did not want this going public. It was not his place to put it out there. It came off as a way to draw attention to himself. Read up on Schilling and maybe you will see why he is so very disliked by so many people. This was just one incident. There are many more.
