Tim WakeField has passed away

Was never a fan of any team he pitched for but he always seemed like a really nice guy. |
I heard about Schilling revealing Wakefield having brain cancer a couple days ago. 57 years old, thanks for the fantastic memories Tim.
His wife Stacy is battling pancreatic cancer too, not fair... |
Wow. Sad. RIP.
|
RIP... was cool to watch a knuckle baller as a kid. I'm sure he inspired tons of kids to learn to throw it. Those Red Sox teams were always fun to watch.
|
RIP

Loss of a real Red Sox legend, and a loss to baseball of his wealth of pitching knowledge.

Tim WakeField has passed awway
Bring back knuckleballers
RIP |
Just awful

A red sox legend and a staple in Boston. Really really sad to see this. Wish his family the deepest of condolences
|
Same age as my old man when he passed.
Feels like a bigger gut punch than usual hearing about an athlete going. |
RIP Tim. Remember when he came to the Red Sox. Seems like yesterday...
|
Damn - my cousins husband was able to meet him for a work event and sounds like he was a great guy. My thoughts go out to his family.
|
RIP….
|
Last true knuckleballer? Dickey was kind of a hybrid
|
As a Yankee fan, utmost respect for a guy that couldn't break a pane of glass and yet forged an incredible career. Sad day.

RIP. Even as a Yankee fan, I always liked Wakefield.
|
Always loved watching him pitch ... even though he was a Redsox ... Run in Paradise Tim! ... he pitched at 44 years old ... that is so awesome ...
|
We lost a great one today. :( :( :(
|
RIP man

F*** cancer and F*** Curt Schilling
|
Very, very sad. :(
Rest in peace, Tim Wakefield. |

Curt has grown into a cancer. |

This one hurts.
You would be hard pressed to find someone to say a bad word about Wakefield. He was the ultimate professional on the field and off. He took the young players under his wing and taught them the correct way to do things. He did whatever was asked of him on the field. Off the field and after his playing days were over he worked tirelessly with the Jimmy Fund and the Red Sox Foundation. F*ck Cancer. Rest will sir |
Cancer Sucks!

Extremely sad news.
..and Shilling is a pos. This one hits kinda hard (for me) |
I’m not sure how this thread evolved into people dogpiling on Curt Schilling. People are so weird.

Him leaking the news probably would do it. He is a pos But this is not the thread to be dogging him |
One of the best SP's of his era sad to see him pass at such a young age.
|
Mr. Knuckleball
RIP |
Super nice guy... met him and got an autograph when i was a kid right after he was called up to the Pirates... didnt even have his name on a jersey yet... RIP
|
God Bless Tim Wakefield. Really sad for him and his family.
|
So sad. Prayers for his wife too. Just effing awful.

Terrible news. May Tim Wakefield rest in peace. He will be sorely missed here in Red Sox Nation.
|
Bummer. Loved watching him pitch.

Did you not know what Curt did, or do you not understand why people were angered by it? If you didn’t know - ok. If you did, then you are worse than weird. |
I was at Tim Wakefields second career start for the Pirates. Went with 2 of my high school buddies who were Pirates fans. Love how he faced a setback at 1B and was able to achieve a solid mlb career after a minor league coach had him experiment with throwing knuckleballs. Sorry to see him leave so soon. Rest in peace.

George Kirby tossed a knuckleball today for Tim.

If you didn’t know - ok. But hey people love to be outraged and rant as opposed to being positive. |
Another Yankees fan who had nothing but respect for Tim and watching him pitch. RIP!
|
I feel so bad for his children. His wife has terminal pancreatic cancer and probably pass in the next month! 2 parents in 2 months is devastating

Hopefully, you can find it in your "heart" to forgive "weird" people for not being purely positive when a 57 year old man, a pillar of his community and his family, succumbs to cancer, but instead of dying with the quiet dignity that marked his life, his last 3 days were instead spent fielding calls from people who shouldn't have known how grave his condition was, and would not have except that someone who should not have been speaking out of turn did exactly that. |

Exactly. RIP Tim |
So sad. So many baseball players have succumbed to brain cancer at an early age:
Tug McGraw, 59 John Vukovich, 59 Johnny Oates, 58 Ken Brett, 55 Darren Daulton, 55 David West, 57 Gary Carter, 57 Bobby Murcer, 62 Dan Quisenberry, 45 Dick Howser, 51 |

Maybe stop bringing it up? |

I hope the other members of your family carry the same class as you do. |
Tim was from Melbourne, FL, where I lived a good part of my life. He meant so much to this community as well and was already giving back before he was well-known. I know this is long, so I apologize, but here’s an excerpt from the local paper.
“He was an inspiration to the kids at the Space Coast Early Intervention Center (now called Space Coast Discovery)in Melbourne, where he helped raise more than $5 million from his own donations and from 25 years as host of a celebrity golf tournament at Suntree Country Club, where celebrities from all walks of life played and donated items to be auctioned. As a high school student, Wakefield took advantage of the opportunity to volunteer at the Early Intervention Center. He was so amazed at the services they provided to their students that he made a commitment to the founder, Betsy Farmer, that he would help. "You have no idea what he meant," said an emotional Farmer, trying to fight back tears. "There would not be a Space Coast Early Intervention Center without him. I've known Tim for many years, and he promised that once he made it to the big leagues, he would help. And he kept that promise. "The first year he made it with the Pirates, he already was planning the Tim Wakefield Celebrity Golf Tournament."” Even though I’m not too far behind him in age, I still aspire to be even half the man that he was off the field. Yea I hope one day I can be considered as classy as *checks notes* Curt Schilling? If you're defending that guy, you need to do some serious self reflection. |
Prayers go out to his family - I remember trying to throw a knuckleball just like him in Little League growing up.
|
Wakefield was 11-3 when he made his only All-Star Game in 2009, becoming the second-oldest player — to Satchel Paige — ever selected to his first All-Star Game. Wakefield was the oldest player in baseball at 45 when he earned his 200th win in September of 2011, retiring his final six batters.
He announced his retirement the following spring training, seven wins short of breaking the franchise record for wins held by Clemens and Young. “I’m still a competitor, but ultimately I think this is what’s best for the Red Sox,” he said at the time. “I think this is what’s best for my family. And to be honest with you, seven wins isn’t going to make me a different person or a better man.” Pure class! RIP! |
R.I.P.
Was always fun to watch him pitch. Even if it was just an ESPN highlight from a random game in June. |
RIP Tim
Obv this is very saddening for the Wakefield family, but I'm not sure I completely understand the hate towards Schilling. He did what he thought was best for them — wanting people to pray for them — and it was obviously a dire situation being that it was only four days ago. Maybe I missing something, I dunno... |

RIP Tim.
I loved watching him pitch as I was one of very few people I'd ever met that could throw a knuckler! |

Yeah, I get that, but how did Curt know? If he knew bc he was close to the fam then I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision for him but it was something he felt had to be done. It's a tough situation but I'm not sure we need to stone him for it. |

That was extremely sensitive, and private, information that the family didn't want to be public. They wanted to grieve and come to terms with his diagnosis and death in private. He took that from them. |

Cuz he's a grade A dbag.
This is what I read:
“This is not a message that Tim has asked anyone to share, and I don’t even know if he wants it shared,” he said. “But as a Christian, and as a man of faith, I have seen prayer work, so I am going to talk about it.”
|

The family didn't want it leaked, but he went out of his way to do it anyway - most likely to create content for his podcast and NOT out of good will. If this had happened to me, the same reaction toward whoever leaked the info would ensue and I would never be able to trust them again or remain their friend. I'm sure the same would be the case for many other people. |

And if it was just for content purposes, sure, absolutely not cool at all. But only He knows what the his true intentions were and will surely deal with it on His terms. I just hate to think it was done with crass intentions. He may be a Dbag but a sinister Dbag, I'm not so sure. I've just been watching a lot of "The Chosen" lately so I'm just trying not to judge and hate as much as I used to. Honestly, only good intentions here. Not trying to rile anyone up. |

But it's very hard to give someone like Schilling the benefit of the doubt, given his track record. Even if he did it to encourage 'prayers', as he said, it's still hard for me to determine whether he was sincere, or if he did it for podcast content. There are many other athletes who, if they did the same thing, I could trust did it with anything but crass intentions (even if it still would be wrong of them to do). Schilling is not one of those people. |
I like my few Tim Wakefield cards. Easy favorite:

Your choice of words when someone passes away tells me exactly what you are. If I'm reading right this thread was referring to Tim Wakefield's passing nothing about Schilling. I guess Schilling must have had it out with the Beauch household at some point. |
I still remember this one, not because I watched it, but because I heard the pitch count at some later point. 172. He went 10 innings for the win, throwing 172 pitches.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ATL/ATL199304270.shtml I'm certain there have been more pitches thrown in a game by a pitcher before, but this was not one of those 15 inning duels from the 1940s that I'd read about in Today in Baseball in the newspaper. This had just happened (when I first heard of it). https://www.mlb.com/news/nolan-ryan-threw-235-pitches-in-one-game "Full pitch count data dates to 1988, making Tim Wakefield’s 172-pitch, 10-plus-inning start for the Pirates against the Braves on April 27, 1993, the most exhaustive effort “on record.”" |
RIP Tim

Maybe I missing something, I dunno...
It was noble for Schilling to want to pray for the Wakefield family. The problem is that they did not want this going public. It was not his place to put it out there. It came off as a way to draw attention to himself. Read up on Schilling and maybe you will see why he is so very disliked by so many people. This was just one incident. There are many more. |
