Ebay Sales Down
Has anyone else seen a downward trend the last 2 months on ebay? The last two now have been as the history shows my lowest 2 since January 2020. While Standard Envelope is keeping me busy and still selling volume the higher $ amount items are not selling like they have. If the trend continues looks like I will not even come close to 50k this year.

My September was down but my October was HUGE. That was driven mostly by Yordan Alvarez though.
The other thing I notice is our sales for the year are similar in terms of dollars, but I've sent out 1/4 as many packages as you. |
My sales have also been down sept-oct of this year. I find myself using the 'send offer' feature more and more in bulk to watchers..even with that still not a lot of action.
I deal primarily in the nonsports trading card category, so not season specific or anything. |
October was my best sales month of 2022.
But, August and September were 2 of the 3 worst months for me in 2022. |
I'm sending offers but sellers want February 2021 prices
|
September was just absolutely awful for us. Picked up in October though and figured it was just ebay being ebay with their algorithms and decided to actually let us sell items again.
|
My October was massive. Change what you are doing if your sales become stale. Change pricing, run sales, send offers, do quantity discounts, list more new items, etc. Not to sound like motivational speaker or anything, but only you can control your destiny.
Yes, the overall market and the hobby market is down. But there are still millions being spent every single day. Find a way to get the few hundred bucks or few thousand bucks you need. Grind if need be. My wife tells me that I am too stubborn to let a recession hurt my sales. I refuse to accept lower numbers than what I want. |
I found myself buying more last month…which means I’ll have more to sell

Some days I just end listings and relist at same price or a bit lower and that leads to sales. Patience helps too |
So funny, I was about to come in here and start a thread.
I normally sell via BIN but decided to run some auctions the last couple weeks. Sales we HORRRRRRENDOUS. Early LeBron SPGU Dual Patch /25 that I thought would get close to $300 gets $92. Superfractor rookie card of a promising prospect gets $42. Orange chrome mega auto /25 of a decent prospect gets $29. Just stunning. |

You mean like COMC prices? Well 643 day streak has now ended with NO SALES on the 1st day of November. I have increased my listings from about 1500 to 2400 total items. As one poster put the elections may have some worried , but I do think the economy is really tightening belts. Well at least I do have a regular job, retirement and VA Dis. Ebay is not my main income. |

During down markets, they can get very bad. You have fewer buyers competing, so the end result is much lower. With BIN prices, you don't need competition. All you need is a single person to pull the trigger. Big difference in end result. |

Sellers are sending messages like this for 10th year cards when presented with Finest, Pristine, Chrome, etc. comps for the same player Good luck out there |

I always find it hilarious those who advocate to list auctions; I’ve even had people argue with me that auctions bring higher prices than BIN. It was a Pro Debut in a minor league uniform. His red from the same set sold for $5. The “decent prospect” is a 22 year old in high A. His blue Mega auto sold for $8.50 earlier in the month. And your LeBron dual was LeBron paired with Larry Hughes. A LeBron/Melo dual patch just sold for $338. You auctioned three cards that have absolutely no market, and clearly had expectations way out of proportion to reality. |
What on earth does the election have to do with selling baseball cards?
|
What on earth does the election have to do with selling baseball cards?
It doesn't have anything directly to do with cards. That was a dumb comment. But, the two potential outcomes will have vastly different indirect impacts over the next couple of years. The same as it will for any other market. But this is about ebay sales, and the idiots on both sides of the isle need to keep it out of these threads. |

Candidates who don’t win are poor prospecting choices? |

Example from this week: Topps Chrome Jared Walsh /25. 2021 All Star for the Angels, struggled last year but definitely some upside. Auction starting at $0.99. Win it for $0.99. If the seller had listed it for $9.99 BIN or OBO I would have pulled the trigger. |

I really appreciate you taking the time to do what you did - it was a reality check I needed. I fell into the trap of looking up generic comps on those three cards, for example, rather than anything specific. For the "decent prospect" - Heriberto Hernandez - I compared his base orange Ref Auto RC /25 to his mega. Clearly unwise. Two of those cards were pulled in packs, so I did not know the markets of their cards. The LeBron I bought during the boom on Mercari for $150 thinking it was an easy flip. Then it languished on eBay BIN for months, and I looked up "LeBron SP Game Used patch" and saw some nice sales for what I'd considered to be accurate comps. This is a lesson in setting the right expectations and doing the right kind of research. Appreciate it again. |
Sales and profits have been growing by double digits every month for me but I sell low end stuff in volume with virtually $0 in COGS. It’s a huge relief to not have to worry about swings in pricing/popularity or having big $$$ tied up in inventory with this route.

People are skittish right now for a lot of reasons. When there's uncertainly, such as about the election, people are going to hold off on purchases. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bofa-says-rush-cash-now-092307884.html |

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bofa-says-rush-cash-now-092307884.html
The economy will not improve on November 9th regardless of who wins. That's a myopic view of a complex problem; most relevant to this thread and discussions of card purchases would be that total credit card utilization has been steadily increasing (13% in Q2). People are putting more and more of their monthly/every day expenses on credit cards, meaning they don't have much cash, period. |
Decided to take a crack at promoting some of my listings, based on suggestions here, because sales have been down. Sold a card within 24 hours.

I have ran several mark down sales since the end of August and 5 , 10 , 20 percent sales and still no real increase except in watchers, tire kickers and low ballers. |
Inflation kills discretionary income which results in less purchasing of wants. It's that simple.

It really is a crapshoot. I've heard other options like lowering prices, raising prices, sending offers, ending and relisting, doing what you're doing, and promoting listings. I'll try them all. |
Inflation kills discretionary income which results in less purchasing of wants. It's that simple.
It is really as simple as that. Then there's also people getting out now who want to move to the next thing and believe they'll make up their losses and then some on that. |
Inflation kills discretionary income which results in less purchasing of wants. It's that simple.
Its that simple in the macro, but not in the micro. I'm only speaking for myself here, because I am a "business", but almost all businesses that fail during any economy blame circumstances. Its a common theme amongst those that go under. On the other hand, almost all businesses that survive really bad economies are adapting and getting creative when it comes to finding revenue streams. They take ownership in their own fate. I'm in that group. I don't care how bad the economy gets, I promise you I will have sales. I refuse to just sit back and accept no sales when transactions are being made by the millions every day on ebay. I will be a part of those transactions. One could write a novel on different techniques to use and how to remain successful, but that is too much for here. The point I am trying to make during my rambling is to not use the economy and inflation as a reason to accept defeat. Take control of your own destiny and make something happen. Additionally, without looking at your store there is usually a reason sellers are not making sales. They are either overpriced or their inventory is completely stale with nothing new coming in. Do you have self awareness? Everyone cannot look at themselves and give an honest criticism, but I recommend doing that. Anyone who is not making sales need to step back and look at their items from a different perspective and get to the root of the problem. It isn't the economy if your sales are zero. The economy may slow your sales, but it will not eliminate them. |
So a bump from last month to this month
Total sales 32.0%Up vs. prior time period Item sales:35.8%Up Shipping and handling:13.1%Up Taxes and government fees:12.2% |
My sales were back up a good bit over the last month. I think lower grading prices has more volume buyers shopping not just for raw cards to grade but also raw cards for their PC. I also think there are some mom's and dad's buying Christmas presents.
|
My sales are down, but that comes with a big ol' asterisk*. If you take out my two biggest October sales (both Yordan), I will probably sell more in November....despite taking four days off for Thanksgiving.
Where I'm really seeing gains is compared to this time last year. I'm already at 2.9x vs November 2021 after being 3.3x vs last year in October. |

Right now I'm at about 60% of last month...but I had two huge sales last month that aren't going to be repeatable because I don't have that type of inventory listed any more. If you take those out (call them cards over $800) I am even with last month already with 10 days to go. In terms of packages out I am on pace to be about equal with last month. |
October was up, November is down but is blipping up a little as of late

Sales on eBay have been steady overall. I did get some lower hammers in September as others have experienced. Pokémon is strong, baseball is good, football and basketball are okay. I've been listing a lot of my PSA 9 stuff more as BIN lately to protect against widely varying hammers on those. That's been working well since I'm not strapped needing immediate sales.
Cheaper cards sold really well on COMC during the pre-sale. Not getting rich but 206 cards that I mostly acquired for chump change sold for a combined $385 isn't bad. Will see how the big event shakes out. |
I got hammered on some 2021-22 NBA prizm/optic cards I put up for auction. Way below comps compared to what current sold BINs are.
|
It's come to a screeching halt
Other than some pena lots. I've sold nothing basically nothing in last month. Not even getting views much less watchers or offers |

I've noticed this as well on the buying side. Absolute robberies at auction -- credit to the sellers for shipping the items and not pulling the ol' cancel and relist. |

Absolute robberies at auction -- credit to the sellers for shipping the items and not pulling the ol' cancel and relist.
Credit where credit is due, for sure. For me, if I put an item at auction for $0.99, I've already made the decision to accept whatever the final bid is. If it's not what I want, well, I need to do a better job of reading the auction market, which I will be doing. TBH, I don't really do many auctions, but I ripped more 2022 Prizm and Optic than I'd like to admit (which isn't a lot compared to a lot of people, but it was a lot for me) and I really just want to recoup some of the massive loss I took. One thing I've definitely decided to do moving forward is that if I ever get the itch again to buy retail, I'm just going to take that amount and spend it on my PC. |

I'm working on having my mind connect ripping to playing scratchers. When I look at scratchers at the gas station, I've basically trained my brain to look at them like they aren't worth the money they're printed on. It's easier for me to do that because I've never really had an emotional connection to them. Cards are an entirely different story. That said, I just recently took advantage of this new mindset. I was at Walmart, and I was considering buying a few Optic blasters. Like, the "itch" was there. I added up the amount (a little over $100). I went home and ordered a PSA 10 2018 Topps Holiday Acuna RC, a 2022 Topps Series 1 Red ice Foilboard Acuna /199, a 2020 Topps Jersey Sleeve Black Acuna Jumbo Patch /149, and a 2019 Topps Heritage Acuna Milk Cap, for roughly the same amount. Unsurprisingly, the "itch" went away and surprisingly, the "itch" to rip was replaced by the "itch" to negotiate a deal with the seller (which I was able to do). Got over 30% off on the order. |

Hopefully the last day or two has given everyone a spike in sales. If it hasn't your store is broken. I can barely keep up with my orders there are so many coming in. I expected a bump with everyone in "spend mode" this week but this has far exceeded what I was expecting. Hope others are seeing the same!!
Hopefully the last day or two has given everyone a spike in sales. If it hasn't your store is broken. I can barely keep up with my orders there are so many coming in. What have you been selling? What does your inventory look like? Are you doing anything to drive more sales? |

I sell pretty much everything, but like to concentrate on mid to lower end cards. Those are recession proof. I posted some things back in the thread that will help sales for those struggling. I practice what I preach.:)! I'll do percentage off sales, volume discounts, send offers, promotions, etc. I am always trying to do something to stimulate sales and keep the velocity of my store high. I also always try to keep newer items coming in. Stale inventory is no good on its on. Its fine to have old stuff that doesn't move well as long as you have new stuff that does move. |

Thanks for that. I would definitely say my inventory has gotten stale. I went to some shows awhile back to freshen things up, but I haven’t been able to carve out time to do some online searching. |

If you aren't listing regularly your listings will be suppressed by ebay as well. |

I do end listings and then relist to keep things fresh in my store. I heard that works to resist ebay suppression. |
so

Do sell similar not relist |

A lot of people search BINs and sort by most recently listed. I so get the occasional sale shortly after items are auto-relisted. I typically do the opposite for auctions. |

I don't have any stats to back this up, but it seems like 80% of my sales are items I have listed within 24 hours of listing, and stale inventory that is within 24 hours of "ending" on the BIN 30-day cycle. My sales have been absolutely insane. Since Wednesday, I've sold over 1,200 cards. Typically I move 300-400 in the same time period. |
Went ahead and adjusted prices, added free shipping, and sent out offers. Sold 5 orders in the last few hours. Some of those orders were rather stale listings. One I broke even on, all the rest left good profit.

That's what I'm going to do next time. Thanks for sharing that. |

100% this. Ebay does not see relisting as a new item. Sell similar every single time. |

What about ending, drafting, and then resisting? |

Gosh dang it, lol, I wasn’t paying attention. Onemillioncubs, you got everything. |

Yes, but do sell similar. |

Correct, but like rwperu34 said, make sure its "sell similar" and not "relist". With that being said, it still doesn't improve your store. Just adjusts how ebay sees you in their algorithm. If you are never adding truly new inventory you are always going to have a hard time keeping up. |

No joke, did some of the things you recommended. Sold 9 orders last night, grossing over $400! |

Beautiful! Way to go! |
My biggest problem lately is I'm not getting any views on half my stuff or more. It isn't all big or hot items but I don't think an Update Lot of Witt RCs should be only getting 2 views in 7 days. Had a Julio /299 that didn't get its first view until the 3rd day. They sent me a message yesterday about being a Top seller plus and changing my handling time to 1 day. Maybe Ill try that to see if it helps any.

Looks like all you have is auctions and starting price for bids are not 99 cents so many may be discouraged from bidding until the end. plus it is a lot of base lots , tons out there. |

If I could pick your brain for a minute how would you go about moving those base lots? Break up in smaller lots and start .99? BIN with Best offers? Something else? Thanks. |

I know you have it down to a science, but it took me like 20 minutes to package 8 cards for shipping tonight. Can't imagine selling at your volume. Keep up the good work. |
