Portland/Oregon
Going in a few months. What's there to do beside seeing the homeless?
|
Put on cheap armor, dye your hair green and make signs. Enjoy yourself ;)
|
Don’t forget your black clothes and mask
|
Riot Ribs!
|
Strip clubs and Black Metal bands.
|
Depends on what you like to do - there's a lot of cool stuff.
|
Day trips to Oregon Coast....Amazing sights. Cannon Beach, Mt. Hood, Multnomah Falls

CHAZ! It’s a liberal paradise if you’re into that sort of thing.
|
Not a chance I would travel there. We have a family friend that has lived out there for 15+ years and has said it is getting awful. Just trying to find another place to move to. She’s also more in the city so my recommendation would be stay away from the city lol.

Yeah they bus these people in so maybe OP should gear up before heading in. |

Yeah, we for sure looking to see these spots. |

They do the same here in Hawaii. They fly them in though. No ID, no nothing. I don't know how. |
I visited Eugene for a football game a few years ago and it was such a beautiful part of the country. We rented a car and drove from Eugene to Florence on the coast and went to the sand dunes and then drove up and down the pacific coast highway. It's really a nice little area. We didn't go to Portland but I think Eugene is only a short drive from there.
|
These are the best sites in Oregon.

We do family stuff - not sure if that's what you're after but - OMSI, Oregon Zoo, Japanese Gardens, Astoria is fun (especially if you're a Goonies nerd or like history - Lewis and Clark @ Fort Clatsop) - north coast is nice if you like quiet areas, head south as there are a lot of spots between Tillamook and Newport. The gorge is amazing, the scenic highway can be a blast during the week - nice drive and lots of hiking spots. Hood River is a fun town.
Depending on when you go - Mariners are up north, Trailblazers, Timbers, Hillsboro Hops, Winterhawks, Thorns, etc. Lots of colleges in the area as well. |
It's about two hours south of Portland.

Skip Portland, travel about an hour west towards the coastline and take the Tillamook Creamery Tour.

I just learned of their ice cream last month. I usually go with whatevers on sale, but figured I would try it. Holybejesus i wont eat anything else now. |

This ... definitely a fun experience & tasty products. I really enjoyed their tour when we were out there a few years ago. We also toured the Oregon campus in Eugene (scenic but a little underwhelming). I loved Bend - the guys did the Bend Ale Trail while the girls went shopping, etc. Portland was a pretty depressing & scummy city with a handful of food trucks being the only highlight. |
basically, drive east on 84 til your tired, hood river, gorge, scenery, bend, waterfalls, hikes, breweries, food galore.
then go west, tillamook exit, southern coast. then after a breather, head north, hwy 101 toward long beach, hit cannon, seaside, astoria, then take mile bridge to washington and explore the scenery there. |
Crown Point overlooking the gorge.
|
Highly recommend traveling the coast line. The only time I go to Portland is when the gf drags me there for shopping or I am going to a 'Zers game. I heard Portland used to be cool in the 70's.
Born and raised about an hour and a half south of Portland. I stick to the coast and Central/Eastern Oregon for weekend adventures. Approximately 2 hours from the Portland metro gets you to the coast line one direction or 3 hours the other way gets you to the high desert. |

Definitely would recommend driving highway 101 through rockaway Beach (near tillamook) area to Newport, great scenery and restaurants. Sent from my SM-A205U using Tapatalk |

Saw Tillamook ice cream in the store after seeing some of these posts and decided I’d give it a try. I’m sold, thanks!
|
Portland is trash, thanks to its inhabitants. Skip it and go anywhere else outside the I-5 corridor.
|
Been there for work a couple times, had fun at Ground Kontrol arcade bar and Multnomah Whiskey Library. Watched a Trailblazers game at Moda Center.
Other then that, just lots of food stands and beers! |
If you happen to run into an Antifa basement dweller, please tell them a patriot says hello.

Did I say nationalist? Or did I say patriot? |
Topical.

Guessing this is a political thing more than an actual, I've lived there or have spent a lot of time in the city. I've found people in Portland to be great overall when we lived there and when I've visited. Just like any place, there are people who end up in the news...where I currently live we happen to have folks on the other extreme.

Their strawberry ice cream is the best! |
Astoria, Newport, Cannon Beach, Gold Beach are where the tourists go. Great fishing or if you just like fresh seafood. During dungeness season, buy crab right off the boats in places like Coos Bay. Or visit an oyster farm.
|
Cool - how long did you live there?
Cool - how long did you live there?
It can be measured in years. I'll say too long. |

Yup, we will be exactly that. Tourist. |

Great place to live if you're an addict. I think there's a box with a Narcan injection on every street corner. |
Summer is definitely the best time to visit. Rain makes it tough to drive in winter. The I-5 can have zero visibility at night with the fog. 101 can be scary when the cliffs crumble leaving inches between the lane and a drop down to the ocean, if the road isn't washed away completely. Also, stick to main roads. A family became stranded in the snow trying to cut across mountains from I-5 to the coast.

I second/third/fourth the recommendation to drive to the coast, I did the Cannon Beach -> Tillamook trip last year and had a great time. If you’ve got time, might be worth a trip to the vineyards as well.
Don’t listen to the fearmongering randos on here, most people making political comments probably haven’t stepped foot in Portland. Portland does have serious homeless issues and the property crime that comes with it but anyone who claims that violent antifa members are a thing to be worried about can pretty safely be written off as a clown. |

Peaceful protests. |
Peaceful protests.
You mean they weren't? The left wing media like CNN said they were mainly peaceful protests so now I'm not sure what to believe? :coffee: |
I saw the kick ass punk band Poison Idea at a place called The Satyricon in Portland. Not sure if it's stll around, the band I was in did a cover of their song 'Lifestyles', that song almost killed me on drums..
|
How is Brookings?
|
I suppose businesses downtown closed for… fun? Couldn’t be safety reasons.
Did you just jump out of a time portal from 2020? If businesses closes in 2022 citing safety concerns it’s not because of a bunch of protesters burning cars. |
How is Brookings?
Not much to do if you're not fishing and a long drive from anywhere else you might want to go unless you just want to stay by the beach. The beach is rocky, a lot of washed up trees in some places. |

Thanks. I’ve been looking at offbeat places to visit. |

Downtown looks essentially the same as 2020, except somehow more bums and violence. https://www.koin.com/news/crime/everyone-suffers-portland-records-90-homicides-in-2021/ |
Thanks. I’ve been looking at offbeat places to visit.
Brookings is a good place to stop if driving along the coast from California. You'd want to drive north because the southbound lane of PCH can be intimidating towards Big Sur. Newport is more of a resort town and is much bigger so a better place to stop. Crater Lake but I haven't been there myself as I'm usually driving in winter when it's inaccessible. |

https://www.koin.com/news/crime/everyone-suffers-portland-records-90-homicides-in-2021/
Which again, is not from protesters committing violence. I'm not going to dispute the homelessness and crime issues, I'm just pointing out that protesters aren't running around looting and burning cars anymore. Pretending like that's a significant concern when visiting Portland in 2022 is fearmongering. |

Brookings in the summer is one of the most beautiful places in Oregon. The Chetco is an awesome river. It is "at the end of the world" as my friends from there would call it. |

Furthest south coastal city on the Oregon Coast with the next city 27 miles away over the border. Geographically it is at the end of the road. |

Not much difference between Northern California (by that I mean Humboldt county and northward not the Bay area) and coastal Oregon. Lots of redwoods, cliffs, and fishing towns along the 101. It's only down around Carmel where there are luxury resorts and the super rich. |
