10k to spend
All sports. Vintage or new. You can buy anything you want for investment purposes, what would you buy?
|
I'll start off with a serious answer. 10k worth of 2018 Ohtani BC Autos. In second place, 10k worth of Soto BC Autos. But absolutely wait 3 months to buy until the depths of the offseason
|
Try cornering the 1990 Fleer Bill Pecota market.

Literally only for Ohtani (which is still close) and the chance you might get one Acuna. Update easily has more value. |

Forgot about Soto? Seriously? Update is by far the best product of 2018 and its not even close! |

You probably should go on the Sports Card Investor site for these types of inquiries.
Series 2 Would Be Better
Maybe. That's a genuine debate worth having. As of right now I would lean to Update purely because of the US300 with its parallels but Series 2 does have Ohtani's true RC and the Bat Down. ( Gleyber can be scratched from both products for the purposes of value.) The more I think about it the more I like your pick. You get a Bat Down, a dozen Ohtani base rc's and the chance at what will be a coveted true rc parallel. Series 2 if Soto flops( which he won't). Update if you like Soto as well. Or as someone on here often says: BOTH |
Lebron

Nothing that is so obvious that it would be suggested in this thread

Agreed. Something that isn't being weighed into this discussion yet is the SP/SSP variations of Acuna, Soto, Ohtani and virtually every other decent-good rookie in update. Was going through a monster box of 2018 rookies that didn't warrant holding out separately last time I checked and stumbled upon a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. SSP and SP and a Tyler O'Neill SP. But Acuna SSP white-jersey, Soto SSP gatorade and Ohtani SSP batting are at least possible with a nice hobby case of '18 Update. |
Lebron Michael Kobe Brady Gretzky
This and I would add Trout because personal preference. Edit: Add Mantle as well |

Edit: Add Mantle as well
Trout (imo) is one of the scarier buys at today’s prices. Age, can’t stay on the field, team sucks, Ohtani taking the media love, & super high prices already. What can he do to elevate his prices any further? Hot super young studs getting all the love. Super scary if you ask me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Nicest ‘56 Jackie Robinson you can find. Maybe save a little for a high quality Roy Campanella, too.
|
Mantle’s that are well centered do very well, and find a couple with strong eye appeal from his best years -56 and 57 are popular. Jordan RC in PSA 8 is a good buy. Nolan Ryan and Bench rookies and early 70’s are good long term buys as well.

Lol. Out of your mind dude. Trout was on a 10 WAR season pace this year. He won the MVP by a landslide in 2019 with only 134 games played. Most of the top hobby guys are scarier buys. Tatis for the actual crazy injury risk, not just Trout's handful over his career. Acuna coming off a full ACL tear and still being too young to guarantee he won't drop off a cliff at some point. It's very unlikely but the Hanley Ramirez case exists. Guerrero obviously so much riskier as he's only had 4 months of peak performance, all of which came playing his home games in minor league parks, and he has since dropped off the table after the Jays switched to Rogers Centre. Soto and Ohtani are close in my book but probably still less safe than Trout. I could probably be convinced either way |
A few copies of Griffey Star Rookie #1 Gem Mint. Use whatever is left on Griffey Rated Rookie Gem Mint. BLUE CHIPS. Don't bother with anything else.

Friday the 13th brings out the crazies

Tom Brady
Mike Trout |
Will not follow my own advice. As I'll spend my next 10k on prospects that won't make it and some Yordan and Soto. As I buy for entertainment not only investment.
But best Ruth card available for 10k is my vote. |
Sealed 2011 Topps Update box. I saw quite a few at The National for just under 10K. I would say that doubles to triples in the next 10 years.

Sergeant Tierney thinks it has just as much to do with a full moon: “It's not bad enough to have Friday the 13th, we've gotta have a full moon too. We keep statistics. We have more accidents, more rapes, more robberies, more homicides, more of everything when there's a full moon. It upsets people.” |
Like any brand of blue chips? Can the be potato? Or is corn better???
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Real funny pal, we're talking about the top shelf most well-known cards in the hobby when we talk about "blue chips". 1952 Topps Mantle. Griffey Star Rookie. Wagner error card. Those are the three biggest cards in the hobby, cards that even the general population can recognize. ONE of those is highly under-priced, temporarily off its highs, and investable by anyone with a thousand dollars or two. And don't even mention anything about that fish playing for Anaheim, he's not even the best player on his team. Long fall for that card, stay away. |
Here is a serious answer.
As many Hall of fame Vintage rookies in mid-grade to high grade as you can get. Safest investment and will be the one that goes up the most over time. |
Vintage, maybe 1952 Mays.
|
1953 Topps Mantle

It’s been all the rage for investors for decades now. |
I’d do like I always do. Spread it around on about 20-30 guys who aren’t even stars, much less blue chips. Hope that 8-10 of them reach some level of hobby awareness. Sell those 10 plus the others who did nothing back into the market. Then repeat again with a new batch of guys.
It’s how I hobby. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
