Upper Deck AEW set details revealed... and it's kind of brutal!!!
I just saw the link for the official details of the new AEW set and it is ROUGH!!! Autographs fall 4... PER CASE (16 boxes) relics fall 8 per case. A quarter of the boxes in each case wont have a hit of any kind!!!
I am deeply disappointed and this to me is a huge missed opportunity for UD. I can't possibly see where these boxes will have any kind of value per box. Wrestling has a tried and true formula. All UD had to do was follow the format of Topps products and include at least one hit per box. I know I will just be picking up singles for this release. Edited- added a link for the details https://www.cardboardconnection.com/2021-upper-deck-aew-wrestling-cards |
Wednesday in action stupid insert counts as the other box hits
|
This is exactly what I expected when I first heard UD got the license. Sucks for sure. The ONLY reason this will ever potentially have or hold value is because it’s the first ever AEW set. If they continue this trend through any other sets, it’s going to kill any potential for these cards. Sucks
|
While not ideal. Would be nice if it was 8 autos/8 relics per 16 box case but hopefully with not a lot of autos out there they will retain value and also with it being the first set.
Hopefully UD does one or two sets a year unlike Topps who has multiple sets a year with an auto in each box which is why I think they don't retain that much value besides the top performers. |
depends as well on how much boxes will sell for. if they are $150, then bad, if they are $49, may not be as bad
|
depends as well on how much boxes will sell for. if they are $150, then bad, if they are $49, may not be as bad
Very good point. Hopefully they are sub $100. Maybe $75?
|
I’m in on a case depending on price
|
Looking at the preview pictures… is it just me or has Darby Allin decided to sign like ‘Dean Ambrose’?

Yeah, it definitely looks like Dean Ambrose's autograph. One of the designers probably looked at the wrong sticker sheet for the mock-up. |

Really disappointed with this. I’ll probably just stick to buying singles now
|
When I first heard about this I was pretty sure I was gonna buy a case. Now maybe two boxes, one to keep and one to open. Now it's all about the box price.

Another of the large sports card stores had this up for pre-order today at 99.95 a box.
|
wow swing and miss by UD and AEW.
|
Another of the large sports card stores had this up for pre-order today at 99.95 a box.
At 100 a box there is just no value being given to the customer. When Topps can do a set with 1 autograph AND 1 relic per box for under 100 there is just no excuse. The possibility of paying 100 dollars and receiving base cards a couple of inserts and maybe a numbered card is just ridiculous!!! I am a fan not a flipper or reseller but even being a big AEW fan I can't justify spending money on a product like this. |
This looks like a 2006 era UD release. Sticker autos, lame designs, small patch windows, and nothing new/innovation. Throw in the modern day too many parallels and you have yourself a very forgettable product.
|
This is why I laugh when basketball/football folks lament no UD and can't wait for them to "make a comeback".
Singles will be crazy expensive when it drips because it's the 1st and fans want product, but it's going to be so hard to move boxes. Gonna suck for breakers which I guess could he good as box prices won't be kept high, but it will keep singles off the market to a degree without vast quantities being broken. $100 for a box of nothing is just too harsh. How could they not at least have relics in every box? |
Yeah, pretty disappointed in this. I'm not much of an AEW fan but was excited about the prospect of another player in the wrestling card market. No way I'm touching this at $100/box.
|
I recently found out about the All In card set from 2008. What's everyone's thoughts on that as the "real" first AEW set?
|
I recently found out about the All In card set from 2008. What's everyone's thoughts on that as the "real" first AEW set?
It isn't ... as AEW didn't exist at the time. Call it the AEW XRC set. :D:)!:)! |
I was so excited to lay down money on a case of this without question, but yeah, can't justify that much when these could drastically drop if they don't sell well. Too bad, but maybe they will adjust things for the next go around if there is one?
|
depends as well on how much boxes will sell for. if they are $150, then bad, if they are $49, may not be as bad
They probably will be over $100 a box and probably closer to $200 and sale out in minutes. People are hungry for these. |
I was hoping that Brodie Lee would have a card in the set, something for me to chase, or even an insert tribute set...
|
They probably will be over $100 a box and probably closer to $200 and sale out in minutes.
People are hungry for these.
Based on distributor preorder pricing, I'd say a $100/box ceiling out of the gate is a pretty safe bet. Based on box configuration, I'd be a bit bumfuzzled if prices pushed north of that. But if anything has proved true in the last couple of years, it's that fans are wildly loyal to brands and will lap up whatever those brands are pushing... so who knows. Based on the roster at the time of this hitting production, I have a hard time figuring the auto checklist would offer enough of a chase to justify an inflated price, but that's just me. |
Just a thought should have done the Tristar format 3 to 4 hits per box usually 1 to 3 autos, 1 possible relic and a numbered card

Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
no need for them to. as pointed out, these will probably sell out regardless of price. so by spreading out the "hits" as much as they are, they are simply increasing the quantity they have to sell. |
Price is now $140 (up from $100) on another of the large online card shops. Really hoping this isn't going to set precedent but guessing it will.
|
I know it sounds bad but unless they print these like 1996 Collector's Choice, I believe the set should actually be worth building. Autos/Mem cards are practically worthless especially when they do the 1 card per box thing...there are usually $2 autos down the line. It also doesn't seem so bad especially if the memorabilia cards are actually ring used.
|
I wander, and it's just a thought, but what if they snuck c.m. punk in the signer list. They probably have stickers from him since he has been in upper deck product before. That could change the perception of this set
|
pretty boring design . i will pass
|
I'm not quite as down on this as most are. Some of the inserts like the Dotted Line and Wednesday in Action are pretty dope. And it'll be nice to have a set where the autos will maintain an exclusivity; feels a bit old school, in that regard. Of course, it does make it a tough rip at anything over 75-100 a box. I'm probably good for a couple of boxes in that price range.
Is there a street date on this yet? And any indication that this may hit retail? |
Is there a street date on this yet? And any indication that this may hit retail?
2 of the other large card shops have the street date as November 3. |

I think it will be a nice base set and it should have a ton of guys that have never had cards before. The issue is the value per box. I agree with what you said I think at 75- 100 I would be in for a box or two. Prices look to be coming out in the 140 range. At that price I will just be buying singles. |
The card market is obviously wonky atm...but if boxes are going to be $150 who is going to sell for that much a month into the release?
Sting has signed himself into worthlessness Moxley autos as Dean Ambrose sell for $20 or less on ebay all day Shida has autos in BBM and they sell for $80 Omega has been in several releases and his auto sell for $50-100 Young Bucks autos as singles sell for $30 a pop Matt Hardy??? Worthless That leaves MJF, Baker, and Allin... Allin will be worth more than the others but I dont see Baker or MJF as huge stars and Allin isn't going to have a long career although his Jack Ass 4 exposure will help his prices. As for rookies ... Allin, MJF, Adam Page, Shida, Omega, Young Bucks, Baker, Cassidy, Jungle Boy, etc all have rookie cards. Obviously the checklist isn't out yet but who on there would be getting their 1st card? |
Out of curiosity: Why don't you view MJF and Britt Baker as huge stars?
They have the potential but they are not on a global name recognition level yet. Baker is fairly new to the sport and hasn't really wrestled any big names... Thunder Rosa, Shida, and Tessa Blanchard many moons ago..then??? AEW's women's division hasn't been very good. MJF barely wrestled any matches this year and his biggest accomplishment is ??? Winning the CZW championship?? Both are great on the mic, decent but not great in the ring, and haven't done much outside of the US. Like I said the potential is there but AEW's audience is relatively small but some of their recent acquisitions could change that. |

As someone who paid $130 for a pre-order, my worry is that we find out that AEW is similar to the 1st baseball and football sets and that they massively overproduced. If they are overproduced then you can probably sell the inserts hot early on when there is a huge buzz. |

anyone who is thinking this will not be overproduced is not looking at the (admittedly) early autograph number totals and odds. Base Wrestlers Parallels Base Auto Tier 1 - 1:180 Base Auto Tier 2 - 1:768 Pyro - #/25 Dynamite - #/5 Gold - 1/1 Printing Plates - 1/1 Base Tag Teams Parallels Base Auto - 1:2,048 Pyro - #/25 Dynamite - #/5 Gold - 1/1 Printing Plates - 1/1 Base Crew Parallels Base Auto - 1:1,024 Pyro - #/25 Dynamite - #/5 Gold - 1/1 Printing Plates - 1/1 Base Set AEW Magazine Base Auto - 1:768 Pyro - #/25 Dynamite - #/5 Gold - 1/1 Printing Plates - 1/1 On top of that, The Dotted Line is a rare autograph insert averaging 1:1,536 packs. look at the number of the base tag teams. there are 35 per card, not counting the number of base. at just 1:2,048, that is over 70k packs just for the parallel versions of one card in just this auto set. if there are only 5 cards in this set, that is 350k packs just for the parallel versions of these 5 cards. there are 4 other auto sets and the dotted line ones to add in as well. the "easiest" auto to hit is 1:180. if these are 24 pack boxes, that is 1 auto every 7 1/2 boxes. |
just noticed this..
Hobby Configuration: 8 cards per pack, 16 packs per box, 16 boxes per case (256 packs per case) 2021 Upper Deck AEW Wrestling Hobby Case Hit Average - 4 Autographs not sure how the numbers are working, unless it is actually easier to hit a parallel auto than a base. by the raw numbers, there are 35 parallel versions of each auto card. |
I am sure people with other experience in football and basketball experience but what is the market looking like for sets that are massively overproduced but the insert odds are still quite hard to get.
|
well, here's the answer....
Upper Deck AEW trading cards will be available starting November 2021 at hobby shops nationwide and with Upper Deck Authorized Internet Retailers (AIRS). They will also be available on Upper Deck e-Pack®, that means it will definitely be overkill and explains the odds / numbers above since those were for hobby only. epack will turn those $0.50 inserts into $0.03 inserts within a week. |

Thank you, I figured it should be, I just don’t get why they are so damn vague, like this is going to get a lot of interest in the e pack thing and it is already a crappy site to begin with and like half the people on AEW Facebook page think it’s only a digital card because of course so many places are doing that stupid #@#@#@#@. |

For 6 bucks its a nice memento of Punk's debut. I bought one just to have it in the collection.

Apologies if this is a dumb question.
I bought two of the e-packs with the intention of eventually having them in hand, will there be an option added somewhere in 6-8 weeks to indicate I want the physical card(s)? Do I have to make a separate purchase when they "become physical?" |

I saw people freaking out because a number of Upper Deck hockey sets were either moved to next year or even cancelled. While I am sure this will have some impact on the AEW product, I think it is more that hockey cards especially in the US is a dead market from the looks of it.
