eBay Fee Increase
Given that eBay is increasing it's final value fees 24% for selling sports cards, are most sellers sticking with it or moving to a different platform?
If so, which one? |

uhhh when did they change it to 24%? Link?

23.5% actually... Sports Mem, Cards & Fan Shop > Sports Trading Cards Collectibles > Non-Sport Trading Cards Toys & Hobbies > Collectible Card Games 12.35% on total amount of the sale up to $7,500 calculated per item 2.35% on the portion of the sale over $7,500 |
uhhh when did they change it to 24%? Link?
They are raising current fees 23.5%, not raising to 23.5%. |
I see it as 12.5% final value fee
|
How are you getting to 23.5% based on that information?
|
still annoying. 10% to 12.5% is not good for my sales.
|
Cashing in on the craze I see.
|
The fees have already been that if you use managed payments. It's not changing at all for sports cards this time.

I was just about to post this... |
NM double post

Never mind.
How are you getting to 23.5% based on that information?
I'm currently paying 10% final value fee, and a change to 12.35% would be a 23.5% increase. |
I'm currently paying 10% final value fee, and a change to 12.35% would be a 23.5% increase.
Yes, but you won't be paying that 2.9% + 0.30 to PayPal once you switch to managed payments... AKA: You were already paying more than the 12.35% and you didn't know it. |
this thread is fake news
|
this thread is fake news
Absolutely. It's also important to note that the final value fees are less than 12.35% if you have a store subscription (basic or higher). These come in at 11.5%. Then, if you're a "Top Rated" seller, you get the 1 PPT (10%) reduction. |
Math and a basic understanding of what they are doing is a struggle for some.
|

AKA: You were already paying more than the 12.35% and you didn't know it.
This. That increase is effectively the old PayPal fee. So, overall, we’re actually paying slightly less than were when PayPal was managing payments. Instead of 13%, we’re down to 12.35%. My understanding is that this is why ebay discontinued its relationship with PayPal, so that it could collect this portion of the fees rather than farm out the payment management to PayPal. |
What are Managed Payments?
|
This thread should be "is anyone going to THANK ebay for reducing our overall payments and increasing our take-home by 5%?"
Then we all get excited about 5%... and then we realize it's just a 5% increase because fees are going from 13% to 12.35%. |
What are Managed Payments?
eBay handles the payments for you instead of PayPal, which is completely cut out now. Most people were switched over during 2020. |

Hate ebay. Cant wait for other platforms to gain steam. They could get by just fine with 5% fees.

Cool story. |

Pet peeve thing for me, but you cannot take a rate of a rate. It's 235bps. |
This reminds me of when Maryland raised its sales tax from 5% to 6% people didn't understand it was a 20% increase and not a 1% increase
|
Hate ebay. Cant wait for other platforms to gain steam. They could get by just fine with 5% fees.
Can you list the platforms that haven't gained steam yet that only charge 5%? I'd love to get in early! |

They are going to reply with, "Well MySlabs of course!" Not realizing that they may be on the hook for sales tax later... |
I didn't realize that everyone had switched to "Managed Payments".
I didn't realize that everyone had switched to "Managed Payments".
Don't you pay a .30 transaction fee to eBay instead using managed payments?
Yes, it's .30 + 12.35% instead of 10% and then .30 + 2.9% |
Yes, it's .30 + 12.35% instead of 10% and then .30 + 2.9%
And before anyone asks, yes, you were paying 2.9% of the full sale price, not the price after eBay fees. Remember, you use to get invoiced all eBay fees. With managed payments, they are taken out of your payouts and the monthly invoices are basically nothing. |
Yes, it's .30 + 12.35% instead of 10% and then .30 + 2.9%
I was actually looking at current fees, come April 1st it's 12.55% FVF. It seems to say that eBay managed payments charges you a commission on sales tax you collect as well? Is that even legal? |
Pet peeve thing for me, but you cannot take a rate of a rate. It's 235bps.
But you can factually say that you will be paying 23.5% more on fees than you did in the past. |

And ebay stock keeps diving when profits are up, odd
So they don't charge a commission on sales tax?
They do charge the commission on everything (price, shipping, tax). I was only responding to the bolded part. |
They do charge the commission on everything (price, shipping, tax). I was only responding to the bolded part.
Considering they are taking the responsibility for remitting said tax to each state for you, it wouldn't surprise me that they take a fee for that as well. |
They do charge the commission on everything (price, shipping, tax). I was only responding to the bolded part.
Looking at a recent sale of mine, I don't think they are taking the fee on sales tax. Here's an order for example: Cost = 6.99 Shipping = 1.00 Total = 7.99 eBay Fees = 1.18 --- 0.30 flat fee --- 0.88 variable fee (saved 0.10 for top rated) 0.98 / 7.99 = 12.265% --- This will likely never be exactly 12.35% due to rounding This buyer paid 0.56 in sales tax, but tax does not show on the "Payment Details" or the "Transaction Details" pages. ETA: If eBay took their fees from the entire amount this customer paid, the variable eBay fees would have been 1.06 instead of 0.98 -- as in: 8.55 * 0.1235 = 1.06 |

Then they should charge a set processing fee to do so, not a percentage commission. It's news to me that it would cost more to submit a higher sales tax amount between two sellers of the same state. |

My fee was $39.39, which is $316.50 * .1235 + 30 cents. I have no idea if they are consistent with it or not, but I do recall them saying that they would do it on the whole amount. |

This thread sums up everything that is wrong about the Internet.

Found a bigger sale that was shipped out of state.
Cost = 1691.66 Shipping = 1.00 Total = 1692.66 eBay Fees = 189.94 --- 0.30 flat fee --- 189.64 variable fee (saved 21.07 for top rated) 210.71 / 1692.66 = 12.448% --- This will likely never be exactly 12.35% due to rounding This buyer paid 139.64 in sales tax, but tax does not show on the "Payment Details" or the "Transaction Details" pages. If eBay took their fees from the entire amount this customer paid, the variable eBay fees would have been 226.29 instead of 210.71 -- as in: 1832.30 * 0.1235 = 226.29 Very bizarre... |
What was the sales tax rate, was it applied to the shipping cost as well?
I believe the tax for this state is 8%. I don't think they taxed the shipping portion. Here's my calculations: 6.99 +1.00 = 7.99 * 0.08 = 0.64 They actually only paid 0.56, which would be: 6.99 * 0.08 = 0.56 |

Item at $6.99 * 0.11115 = .78 Shipping $1* 0.1235 = .12 Tax $0.56 * 0.1235 = .07 =.97 cents |
