That's like a band wearing their own t-shirt at a concert.

Kingofkings1281 03-03-2021 09:16 PM

Alright, that’s pretty awesome.

ninjacookies 03-03-2021 09:18 PM

Highly dope.

Ray's got kind eyes. Would let him dogsit my pomeranian.

This is phenomenal.

pharmboymatt 03-03-2021 09:30 PM

But did Ray Allen really buy his own card? Sure sounds more like he was gifted the card.

I’ve never read anything by Ray Allen, but I refuse to believe anyone but some marketing person wrote that post.

Is it possible that Ray went through them to purchase his own card?

Wouldn't Goldin Auctions suffer some backlash if Ray didn't actually buy his card (like they said he did).

I see what you're getting at but I'm hoping it's true and not some marketing ploy. Would be a little disappointed if the latter.

Yep pretty much lol. There's a much higher chance that Ray Allen got paid (plus card) to make that post rather than him paying any money out for the card.

Onepocketj 03-03-2021 09:51 PM

Shoulda done like Giannis and just kept it.

More curious how much he got paid, ha.

canuck 03-04-2021 02:38 AM

I work in e-marketing. This is a sponsored influencer post - meaning he got paid to post about it in his official account in exchange for getting the card for free and getting paid to do it.

Sure reads like a sponsored post but I thought nowadays influencers have to put something like "#ad" or "#sponsored" somewhere in the post if they're getting paid to make it.

kingofsnake 03-04-2021 02:46 AM

I'm a big Ray Allen fan, but he really did that card dirty with the black marker.

Luckily for him, he can fix that pretty easily:p

Spacemanspif 03-04-2021 03:13 AM

completely disingenuous marketing ploy, when you consider the wording of the post:

"Ray Allen just bought his own Logoman card. We expect more and more players, past and present, to start investing in their own cards"

I can believe that with the recent media attention, players will start collecting/buying their own cards, because it's fun and they can afford to pay whatever price. to word it as investing is 100% aimed at the social media audience to try to stir up sales.

Stuff like this is going to snowball.

I know you’re not saying this, but to think the amount of players genuinely buying their own cards (or even cards in general for that matter) will surpass or be equal to the amount being paid to do so is insane. And yet they will all be lumped together.

To the mooooooooon.

yup in the States. Not everyone does it, still a grey area. They'll just claim they don't know...not sure if that would fly with FTC.

canuck 03-04-2021 04:26 AM

To get a celeb on this, it would cost fifthdownsportscards quite alot of money to set this post up with a marketing agency. The text Allen 'wrote' was prepared by the agency and given to Allen's people to approve and then post it on his account. Allen probably didn't even care about the free card he got, he just got paid handsomely to make the post.

Influencer marketing is everywhere on social media. We'll see alot more of these paid collaborations with other players to come now that people are seeing this Allen post is gaining attention.

We are in 2021 now. Retired players used to make money signing autographs at trade shows, now they can just sit at home and pose with a card and make way more money without needing to leave their room.

Derekbauer 03-04-2021 06:10 AM

Personally, I could care less if it’s a marketing ploy or not. More exposure puts more money into all of our pockets.

Kenflin 03-04-2021 07:48 AM

It never fails with these type of post. They always go down the dark path. It’s crazy how collectors act like the old man on the porch. You honestly don’t need to overthink EVERYTHING.

2010GBPackers 03-04-2021 08:28 AM

^^^100% agree. It's like a circular firing squad in here.

What's the difference between doing this and promoting a product? Guys. Chill.

sebreg 03-04-2021 08:33 AM

Just have fun with it, wouldn't sweat the details. At worst it's a paid ad gig, but so what, it's still cool Allen ends up with this card imo. Fun promo for the hobby. Would love to learn about the players who do actually collect cards though, that would be fun. I've heard Durant collects?

spacewrangler 03-04-2021 08:47 AM

Yes the text/post were probably a promo, but I don't think that is very relevant. Just bc Ray didn't personally sit at his PC bidding doesn't really matter. If it is a promo then it means he accepted cardboard as payment for WORK, even if it was easy influencer-work. What's important is he is clearly very happy to have the card!

And players collecting isn't all that far fetched. I'm sure you all know its been pretty common in the MLB for a while, no reason to believe it can't catch on in the NBA.

MIRRABB 03-04-2021 08:59 AM

As a Michael Redd collector I'm triggered here. How dare he...

Josh Donaldson, 3x baseball all-star and former league MVP, is a pretty serious collector... check out his insta some time!

istheskyblew 03-04-2021 09:53 AM

I am still not sure why people were thinking he was gifted the card?

There is only one of these. Finding the owner and convincing the owner to part with it is a big deal.

All of us collectors do the exact same thing when we land a long time ISO, why can't Ray do it?

Because influencer marketing exists, this HAS to be the case here. There is NO WAY, Ray Allen, a man with most likely a fairly decent bank account could have simply wanted to spend some money on one of his own. It was 100% a paid promotion. End of story. I can imagine his bank statement - nothing on there that says Goldin Auctions, guys. Sorry to dissapoint.

Goldin himself said in reply to a comment on his tweet that the card wasn't a Goldin Auction, so there's that. No need to be all up in that sheister's jock, already plenty of others there.

Seriously
I mentioned earlier that the idea of players buying cards of themselves (1/1s or other super rare stuff) is completely reasonable and cool to see, but the corny picture / caption, combined with the language used... claiming that he's "investing" are the phony/disingenuous parts. It can be both things.

mindcycle 03-04-2021 06:25 PM

Yeah man, Ray Allen isn't "investing" in cards, lol. He either bought the card because he wanted it or someone gave it to him for marketing/social media campaign purposes. I kind of think he just wanted it. Good for him.

Bruin7 03-04-2021 06:34 PM

This is the future of super high end. Althletes and celebrities can easily acquire major pop culture cards to show off on IG (Timbaland Deshaun Watson). They’re all looking for attention. Great for those holding.

hairyangryfella 03-04-2021 06:56 PM
Personally, I could care less if it’s a marketing ploy or not. More exposure puts more money into all of our pockets.
This is kinda wrong.

Might put more money in your pockets if you're already holding stuff, but for those who have never bought to invest, it just makes things harder/more expensive to buy.

Nobody's going to be paying thousands for my set of mid-90s inserts, so it's not like they're worth much to anyone and I couldn't (even if I wanted to) sell to even try to buy a box or something nowadays, or any nice singles, as things are getting ridiculous.

It's truly no longer a hobby at all. It's too expensive to be. And few people are genuinely buying just to have and not care about the future value.
