2006 World Cup Panini Cards: Messi and Ronaldo meet Zidane, Ronaldo, Beckham and Co
 

It's been flying a bit under the radar with everyone chasing 2014 and 2018 Prizm but Messi and Ronaldo CR7 do have a first World Cup card from 2006. They've been steadily going in the $30-$50 range raw recently but I suspect after they were outed on Facebook today they will pick up. It's a Panini trading card issue simply called "Germany 2006", not to be confused with the ugly "Goaaal!" gaming cards from 2006 too. These are quite attractive cards, the CR7 especially jumps out.

As well as having the first World Cup cards of CR7 and Messi it features an absolutely stacked metalised insert set of 20 comprising Zidane, Ronaldo R9, Beckham, Totti, Zlatan, Ronaldinho, Henry., Figo, Kaka, Rooney, Essien, Shevchenko, Drogba, Ballack, Riquelme, Van Nistelrooy, Buffon, Cech, Kahn and Crespo :eek:

My limited experience is that the CR7 is a bit tougher to find than the Messi, on laststicker.com there are 52 people searching for CR7 with just 2 offering compared to 48 searching for and 6 offering for Messi. As an extra bonus I understand boxes in the USA had an additional rainbow foil team USA insert set, and those in Japan had a Japanese one.

Just kidding. At least I have one already. As you said, it’s a great looking set - much better images than the waist up junk in Prizm. Full body images - with the ball! - are the best.

Yes those are the ones. The ones with the Japanese team inserts have some Japanese text, no idea how to tell which boxes have the USA inserts.

I posted my box in the box break section. What a phenomenal product. These boxes have to start going up soon. So many good players and the Messi and Cristiano are going up a lot as of late.

You did well to get Messi and Ronaldo from 1 box. I can't tell from the pictures but did you get any of the metalised cards like above?

I got 6, so Im guessing 1:4 packs per box. Only card that I’m missing, that I really wanted was Zlatan.

That's interesting, I got around 12 in most of the boxes I opened. That must mean that in US boxes the US Foil set replaces the regular metalised cards.

I don’t like the sound of that. While the USA insert is a decent Set, I’d so much rathe4 have the metalised cards. I have only been able to find 1 Japanese box, but was sold before I could make an offer.

The place in Germany I was getting them from is out and selling singles of Messi and Ronaldo for more than the old box price (which was about 45euros / $50 ). There are a bunch on sale from Australian sellers but I have no idea which version box you would get.

Ronaldo and Messi were selling for $89 raw yesterday. Quite a bit more than a box goes for. I can’t see these staying staying near $60 per box when these #2 are going up almost everyday. You have guys like Zidane and Ronaldinho who are going in $25-35 range, as well.

Problem is, these cards are fairly ugly, design-wise.

Was digging through some boxes of old cards yesterday and found 2006 GOAAAL cards of both Messi and CR7.

Not sure if they are scarcer than the 2006 Panini cards, but they are better looking....

I only see these boxes going up, up, up.. Get them at $60ish a box while you can.

Have to say I see them the opposite, I hate the GOAAAL cards with a passion as they look like proto-Adrenalyn cards. I love the design on these though.

Indeed.. I see those two cards going up even more. They are World Cup Rookies of two of the best players in the world, foreign release, hard to get. Great value IMHO.

I am wondering, should I open the boxes? Do the cards come out clean without damage generally?

You did good in getting them. As long as they were stored properly, the cards should come in good shape...only one way to know for sure

I pulled both Messi and CR7 on my Japanese version box. With the current trend, I can only imagine the price would go way way up for this card and the box. I'm also excited to find other great players that I grew up watching: Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos, Zidane, Rooney

2 boxes opened, 1 Messi and 0 CR7.

Managed to get about 15 of the metallic ‘star’ players cards including Rooney, Beckham, Zidane, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Henry, Crespo, Buffon and Totti though.

Not sure whether to crack the other two boxes or hold off.

Looks like last 3 Messi cards listed when for around $100!

Also, I know it’s been touched on, but these cards are really nice in hand. Simple design, full body, and the metallic cards really do pop.

They do look awesome in person! I have a feeling about this set....pop reports for PSA 10s and BGS 9.5s are extremely low and for the Ronaldo/Messi collectors these are a must have.

Seems most of the sealed boxes are in Australia. I cant imagine theres much unopened boxes/cases left.

Thanks. I had 2 boxes in my cart a week or so ago and they were $65/box US.

I kind of forgot about them and now they are double that price almost. Ugh!

I got them for $91 a couple days ago.

Man this is so crazy I to see this set being so sought after... I think I was able to score 2 boxes back in 2006 (a few months) after the world cup for like $40 per I think lol... unreal to see these in demand. I remember trading a base card of someone idk who to get Ronaldo (towards completing my set)... I collect each world cup card set basically

I opened 6 of these boxes this weekend from the same seller - American living in Australia so they didn’t have to travel as far :)

Was just going to do 2-3 but then got carried away, ha. As others have said, it was a fun rip and the cards look great in hand. The metallic cards look cool also and a lot of older names that were fun to look for.

Not to scare anybody who ordered from the seller in Australia, but some of cards had light scuffs along the top or bottom edges.. I mean I guess these boxes are almost 15 years old, and who knows maybe that happened when they were shipped to him initially. This is most notable on the shiny team cards, I think the coating maybe was not as thick as the metallic and the base is just normal card stock on the edges mostly.

Because of this, there were some small edge nicks on a few of the Messi and Ronaldo cards I pulled. Could also just be my boxes, but giving you a cautious heads up! Probably the gamble that comes with getting older boxes. See my photos below, hopefully I’m just being nit-picky.

One of the packs the cards were jammed so hard against the top edge that the seal was busting through and left a ribbed imprint on all of the cards inside (this was the only pack I saw like this), and OF COURSE it was the pack Messi was hanging out in (D’oh!!)

Anyway, I would say ~4/6 of the boxes had both Messi and Ronaldo and the other two had one of them, to give you an idea of what to expect. None of my boxes had doubles of either.

My initial plan was to open half, then sit on the others but when my first couple Messie and Ronaldo cards had edge dings/nicks then I opened most of the others. Sooooo many base now, ha. What to do. Thinking of completing the set and then saving the bigger name cards.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how much PSA would knock down a card with the nicks on the bottom edge like in some of the photos I posted?

I have never graded before, but I don’t really need 5-6 of each (Messi & Ronaldo) - initially was going to keep a couple for myself and then sell or trade the others and it seems people prefer graded. But if they aren’t going to grade well it’s not worth it and maybe I just hang onto them. Not an easy sell when there are defects.. *shrugs*

Overall I’m happy - honestly, I’ve bought from Blowout in the past but only recently checked out the forums. I was lurking the past couple months and got into soccer with basketball prices insane this year, and bought the boxes to hunt for Messi and Rondaldo (but also cool to get Zlatan, Zidane, etc). I felt a little crazy at first getting so many boxes but glad that I did to get a couple of them in perfect/near perfect condition.

I believe the nicks on these cards have to do with the printing/packaging process. PSA 10s are going to be a premium. I pulled 6 Zlats with the exact same nick on the mid bottom, Ronaldo had upper right nicks, Messi‘s looked real good.

There’s a Messi and CR7 auction ending in about 45 minutes. Messi is at $135 while the harder pull in this box, CR7, is at $56.

I see the Messi went for $157.50 and another sold with a $99.99 BIN on Wednesday as well

These are bargains currently, looking forward to seeing the graded copies soon.

I have 6 copies of each CR7 & Messi and this seems like a really tough grade, corners are especially sensitive.

I sent in just about the same counts a couple weeks ago, under magnification the Messi’s looked clean, hoping to get a few gem mints. Ronaldo had upper right corner issues on most cards, would be ecstatic to see just one gem mint. I think the pops on both of these will be less than 100 gem mint when everything shakes out. These are a buy & hold, can only go up from here.
