Evan Mathis Trimming Anything and Everything to Sell via Probstein, PWCC, & COMC

Names: Evan Mathis, Adam Mathis (brother) Associates: Chad Thyzel (ebay ID: legendsandlegacies, formerly superiorsports), Jason Koonce, Rick Mcgehee (fictitious alias?), Rick Probstein (Probstein123), Brent Huigens (PWCC), COMC, Sean Bassik (investinbaseball) Known eBay Accounts: cardology (o***o on all platforms) cardquest12 (u***r on eBay old, t***a on eBay new) acme.cards (s***s on eBay old, a***m on eBay new and VCP) quest4cards12 (c***q on eBay old, 2***a on eBay new) Unknown ID Coded as t***q (purple star) no.bids.all.bins Known COMC accounts: StorageUnitFinds DiamondGems Sells via PWCC, Probstein, COMC, and eBay account cardology. Has formerly sold cards via investinbaseball, eBay account acme.cards, and likely eBay account otiasports previously known as worldwideinvestments (Jason Koonce). At the very least, he currently has BIN listings for sale with Probstein and he has been consigning cards to PWCC though at least August, months after Brent outed him as a card trimmer to other(s). Past shipping information: 2018 sale to acme.cards (this is Mathis's home address per Williamson County property records): acmeamericana@gmail.com Buyer: Rick Mcgehee Address: Windy Wood XXXX Manley Ln Brentwood, TN 37027-5532 2016 sale to acme.cards: acmeamericana@gmail.com Chad Thyzel Address: PO Box XXXXXX Temecula, CA 92589-1780 Email addresses: ergoism@gmail.com evan@cardology.com acmeamericana@gmail.com In addition to trimming a wide array of vintage cards, he also trims a ton of 90's Michael Jordan inserts (as confirmed independently and by an friend/associate of Brent Huigens), Ken Griffey Jr. rookies and inserts (a tip about a tiny PSA 10 UD Griffey Rookie was what spurred this investigation), Trout Update rookies by the dozen, Brady rookies (primarily Bowman, Press Pass, and Skybox), Bonds rookies (especially Traded and Traded Tiffany), Jeter rookies, and a slew of lower end inserts. It appears that he began his new job as a card trimmer immediately upon retiring from the NFL in late January of 2017. Here's the feedback he (or his brother) left from the quest4cards12 around this same time for an 18" paper trimmer: https://web.archive.org/web/20191220002941/https://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=FeedbackAsSeller&userid=11xopt40&iid=-1&de=off&interval=0&searchInterval=30&items=200&searchInterval=30 He also has a website where he spams eBay listings from PWCC, Greg Morris, Probstein, and 4SC: https://www.cardbuff.com/ (evanmathis.com redirects there as well) Archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20191219202310/https://www.cardbuff.com/ Additional reading: Evan Mathis playing poker with "good friend" Jason Koonce: https://www.pokernews.com/news/2019/01/retired-nfl-offensive-lineman-evan-mathis-pca-33100.htm "Sell your collection to Super Bowl 50 Champion Evan Mathis at the 2018 NSCC" from Sean Bassik of investinbaseball: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=257961 His site, cardbuff.com, sending unsolicited spam email to members of Net54 and CU forums: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=251048 https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/994338/cardbuff-com PSA Collector Profile of Evan Mathis: https://web.archive.org/web/20191219202821/https://www.psacard.com/articles/articleview/8378/collector-profile-evan-mathis-curator-miniature-museum Now, on to the cards.... All of the following were purchased untrimmed by cardology and later sold by PWCC. Other cards in the PSA subs were sold by Probstein and/or acme.cards: https://web.archive.org/web/20191219212021/https://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=FeedbackLeftForOthers&userid=mag-neat-o&iid=-1&de=off&items=200&searchInterval=30&mPg=52&page=23 https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1971-topps-thurman-munson-all-star-1866624382 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1559111 https://web.archive.org/web/20191219205536/https://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=shett&ftab=FeedbackLeftForOthers&ftabfocus=true&searchInterval=30 https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1949-bowman-60-yogi-berra-nm-psa-1860113305 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1485889 This is a fun one because Mathis (cardology) purchased it as a PSA 8, trimmed the top edge, and sold it as a PSA 9. Gary Moser than purchased it as a PSA 9, trimmed/shaved the bottom edge, and then sold it as a PSA 10. Corndog already called out the 9 to 10 (Link: https://www.blowoutforums.com/showpost.php?p=14772502&postcount=3080), so I'll just focus on the 8 to 9 trimming below. https://web.archive.org/web/20191219234136/https://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=FeedbackLeftForOthers&userid=8333rick&iid=-1&de=off&searchInterval=30&items=200&searchInterval=30 https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1933-goudey-babe-ruth-149-psa-1961341277 However, this Authentic Altered card has been trimmed by Mathis to get it into a PSA 6 slab. https://web.archive.org/web/20191219234136/https://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=FeedbackLeftForOthers&userid=8333rick&iid=-1&de=off&searchInterval=30&items=200&searchInterval=30 https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1969-topps-reggie-jackson-rookie-card-1960353910 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1959852 The following card was purchased raw by acme.cards, trimmed, and sold by PWCC as a PSA 10: https://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=FeedbackLeftForOthers&userid=duffem79&iid=-1&de=off&searchInterval=30&items=200&searchInterval=30 https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/michael-jordan-1995-96-xl-natural-1956200276 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1931065 The following card was purchased by unknown ID coded as t***q (purple star) before it was trimmed. This ID appears frequently in Mathis subs. https://web.archive.org/web/20191219232107/https://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=FeedbackAsSeller&userid=noochie29&iid=-1&de=off&items=200&interval=0&searchInterval=30&mPg=15&page=3 https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/wayne-gretzky-edmonton-oilers-upper-1957032048 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1967458 The rest of these cards are attributed to Evan Mathis via the PSA submission they're in: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/2014-topps-stadium-club-mookie-betts-1960595825 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1961863 He is also responsible for this trimmed card that has already been called out: https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=1312334 In addition to this previously called out card and the majority of the other high-grade PSA Jordan inserts sold by Probstein and PWCC since 2017: https://www.blowoutforums.com/showpost.php?p=15329535&postcount=55 As usual, this is nothing. Untraceable cards outnumber traceable cards probably by about 50:1 and it looks like he was breaking vintage sets to trim as well. Edit 1: Here's an AI Platinum that was first sold twice by PWCC as a BGS 8, bumped to a BGS 9 without alteration and sold by PWCC again, purchased by Mathis, trimmed, graded a PSA 10, and sold by PWCC for a fourth time. Go grading! https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1491181 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1519051 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1695326 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1963272 Edit 2: This PSA 10 Carlton Fisk is really the definition a franken-card. If you really study the photos, you can see that the card was pressed to increase stock area and then haphazardly trimmed back to create lots of partial edge and corner shaves to sharpen the corners. As a result the card doesn't really have any straight edges left, yet still receives a PSA 10. The last two photos are the best as they show the cards overlaid with a red outline that has a constant position. This outline shows how the left and top edges have been trimmed while the bottom right corner area has been pressed out to sharpen the corner. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1972-topps-psa-carlton-fisk-rookie-1821037162 https://goldinauctions.com/LotDetail.aspx?inventoryid=34312 Edit 3: Trimmed card with no grade increase and a $42.51 value gain. Note the "Before" photos below are from an earlier PWCC sale. acme.cards purchased the untrimmed card from warrent1954 as shown. https://web.archive.org/web/20191223003004/https://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=FeedbackLeftForOthers&userid=warrent1954&iid=-1&de=off&items=200&searchInterval=30&mPg=8&page=3 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1587475 https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/roberto-bob-clemente-1957-topps-76-1919626230 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1957973 Edit 4: A very small Bench. One trimmed edge noted. Can't tell if the other edges have been cleaned up as well due to the photos. https://web.archive.org/web/20191223022603/https://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=FeedbackLeftForOthers&userid=hqqkem123&iid=-1&de=off&items=200&searchInterval=30&mPg=10&page=4 https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1969-topps-95-johnny-bench-psa-ex-mt-1900530213 https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1959831 Edit 5: Only at PSA can you remove a card's corner to increase a its grade. And only at PWCC will this yield an eye appeal sticker. The entire top edge might be trimmed, but it's too close to the bumper in the PSA 8 photo to make the call. https://www.pwccmarketplace.com/items/1672261 |
Uh oh.

This should be fun.
|
Wait...so people are trimming with an old school elementary school paper trimmer?!
|
This is absolutely crazy
|
As if this dude doesn't have enough money. Seriously, WTF has happened to this hobby? I know trimming has always been around, but this just absolutely disgusts me.

Absolutely fantastic job of piecing it all together!
Once again, PWCC is smack in the middle of it. The list of hobby scum just keeps growing... |
THIS is what is needed to spur the feds. Nail someone high profile

This guy made bank in the NFL! Maybe he gets a rush of doing this? Why else would he do this? Unless he pissed his money away & needs it. |
This guy made bank in the NFL! Maybe he gets a rush of doing this? Why else would he do this? Unless he pissed his money away & needs it.
Seems like you could easily make 7 figures a year trimming and without much of a labor committment. I don’t see why that precludes someone just because they might have a few mil in the bank. It’s not like he’s doing this to bank 50k/year |
Hold on folks. Didn’t Evan Mathis consign the 52 Mantle PSA 9 in Heritage Auctions last year that went for 2.8 million. Holy #@#@#@#@. Someone paid that for a Mantle that was worked on. This is crippling to the hobby, to Heritage Auctions. Someone will be demanding a 2.8 million REFUND. This is beyond egregious and criminal.

Some of your posts make it seem like you put a lot of time and energy into them. Others, not so much. |
Wait...so people are trimming with an old school elementary school paper trimmer?!
Yeah I googled that too. I have always thought they would at least need an expensive piece of equipment. A random question on trimming - shouldn’t the difference in trimmed / un-trimmed edges be discernible, before the card is in a slab? I bet a Munson 10 is like the Holy Grail to these guys. “Trout Update Rookies by the dozen.” DammitJim, I want a new grading company! |

This em effer makes $21.1m in the NFL with a fat ass pension and then becomes a scammer trimming cards.. wtf is wrong with people.

Wow, some big wigs should get the feds on this. This would be a high profile snag.

Is Cardology, Evan Mathis? he made his account in 2018 but never posted until this thread. Anything particular of interest happen around that time? It seems that account has been following the trimming threads, since he knows the inside joke about birthday parties.

He posted buy ads recently. |
This particular scandal will go down as worse for the hobby than PWCC, Moser or PSA botching clear and obvious alterations. I’ll tell you why.
This one involves a former NFL player and the scandal will now be picked up by the likes of Darren Rovell and Pro Football Talk (liberal weirdo Mike Florio). It will hit mainstream and for sure will do severe damage to the hobby. With so much new money (big investors) pouring into the hobby it’s going to be a huge turn off and they’ll do an about face and reinvest back into hedge funds and stocks. You can bet on that. This is a huge, huge mess people. |
He posted buy ads recently.
I was going to ask if the cards were headed to Cali or Tennessee. |

With so much new money (big investors) pouring into the hobby it’s going to be a huge turn off and they’ll do an about face and reinvest back into hedge funds and stocks. You can bet on that. This is a huge, huge mess people.
Fraud, not scandal. Outright fraud. People get jail time for fraud. Not as much for scandal. |
I think that collection has already been outed as trimmed
Well, to the extent that a lot of it was curated by Dave Bailey, yes. I think the PSA insider letter bent in that direction. I'm sure there are other sources too.
Wait...so people are trimming with an old school elementary school paper trimmer?!
That’s hilarious. |
the '69 Jackson is "odd".
takes an "altered", chops it, comes back a 6 WITH a gaping space inside of the psa holder. especially painful to a "6" vintage collector. |

Trimming a piece of paper isn't rocket science. Turning a single PSA 9 into a PSA 10 can get you a more than capable setup. There's a reason that I assume that every graded card is trimmed. Literally anyone can do it and the profit potential is off the charts. |
This particular scandal will go down as worse for the hobby than PWCC, Moser or PSA botching clear and obvious alterations. I’ll tell you why.

It sells. I wonder if Lichtman will begin to suffer from client fatigue soon. |

Often times right to NJ for Probstein.... I had sold some lots of vintage to Sean a couple years ago and that’s where he had me send them. |

I think this puts that to bed. Scammers are really just focusing on the value bump from a lower grade to a higher. In fact, I think trimming may be more prevalent in the mid-grade world. Seems much less likely to get caught. If you’re submitting cards that are at the higher end of the spectrum, you’d be much more concerned about getting more scrutiny from the TPGs. PSA 6s won’t be scrutinized. |

The difference between the value of a single PSA 9 and a PSA 10 will get you trimming cards like a pro. There's a reason that I assume that every graded card is trimmed. Literally anyone can do it and the potential profits are crazy.
A caveat should be added here. PSA gets weak-kneed and blurry-eyed every time a celebrity or athlete gets involved, either directly or indirectly, with their service. Evan probably could have used pinking shears and got the same grades. |

Makes sense. Dmitri must have felt extra Madoff putting those custom labels on there too. |

Card trimmers are kind of like degenerate gamblers or lifetime alcoholics. They just can't stop. Anything that passes through a card trimmer's hands is subject to alteration. We've seen that time after time in the BODA threads. Trimmers don't discriminate. |

I second this. Although I also think it’s easier to bump a grade (or 3) when dealing with cards in the 6-8 range. IMO, it’s going to take a lot more noticeable work going from a 3 or 4 to a 6 or higher. I also don’t know jack except what I’ve read here. But again, it’s hard to imagine anyone involved in this actually demonstrating some restraint. |
isn't sean bassik a member here buying vintage?
I wonder if he'd pull my testimonial down now? I helped a local guy sell a collection of mostly complete 1954-1960s sets to him a few years ago on Net54. He did make the process easy, but I wasn't doing anything to help scam people. He made an offer and the guy with the collection took it. Too bad it looks like he's turned heel. Has he responded to any of these threads? |
Honestly had to google this guy. Never heard of him. Looks like he dropped the soap one too many times.

1st, we are on the same side of this issue. that being said, let's take the '69 Jackson in a 4. ave. price, $100, bumped 2 grades to a 6, it's $200. * that's assuming the flaws in a 4, can even be "successfully" doctored. ave. price of a 6, $200, bumped 2 grades to an 8, it's $1,500. let alone, price of an 8, $ 1,500, bumped to a 9, it's $ 17,000. not trying to be argumentative in any way, just trying to explain what I see. |
