What is a good price for 2018 Topps Update?
 

Hey everyone - I was thinking about buying a box or two of 2018 Topps update from my LCS - he has them at $70 a box is that a good price? Do you think it is worth it? I would love to hear feedback from everyone!

I am pretty sure he has 2018 Series 1 & 2 as well - are either of those better buys?

0.3% Vintage

The true probability of hitting an Acuna parallel or SP (including the SP and SSP autos) in a hobby case is 57.48%.

I know I shouldn't be surprised, but it's amazing to look back at update and see how quickly it's risen over the last 6 weeks.

I remember buying this for $42 a box back in one of the "waves" late last year.


If Soto/Acuna both do well out of the gate, it wouldn't shock me to see this hit $100 a box for hobby.

Good lord, I should have tried to get more when these were dirt cheap for $500 a case. I should have bought 5 cases of this stuff to just sit and reap in the profits. I didn't think it would increase this much so soon though. We are talking about a $30 per box increase in 4 months.

Thanks for the feedback everyone - I think he said he has 4 boxes maybe I will pick them up and rip 2 and hold 2 (until I get bored and end up ripping them too). I have had very little success holding onto unopened was haha.

It's also surprising how quickly this is drying up. It's not like topps didn't print a TON of this, but blowout has no hobby boxes in stock (and hasn't for quite some time)

Another major seller has no hobby in stock either. The third major seller has them for $79 a box.

I'm thinking there's plenty of people hoarding. I can't compare others, but personally I am sitting on half a case of hobby.

Oh, I know there are people hoarding. I just want to know who it is. Are distributors still holding on to this stuff? Or is it major retailers waiting to see what happens with the season starting?

No I busted one case, but kept 2 x hobby and 3 x jumbo cases sealed.

2019 being weak is only helping 2018

I was able to look around a few weeks ago in one of the warehouse bays of BO and I was floored.

Stuff that hasn't surfaced in years??? They have pallets of it. Nothing is FS either.

You would think if blowout and "the other big seller in NY" had hobby in stock, they would be for sale, but who knows? I Can't answer the question on distributors as I have no connections.

Yes I was talking about 2018 becuase that's what this thread is about. I mentioned 2019 talking about Series 1 being better in hobby boxes versus jumbo. Was curious about 2018 Update if hobby was better or if jumbo was better. I have access to either one.

Is hobby or jumbo better with the 18? I know in 19 the hobby were better, but was curious about 18 Topps Update. I have a chance to get both right now and want to buy some to set on.

Crazy right?!? I cleaned out eBay with the 10% bucks on anything <$70/box delivered earlier today - there were only 6 boxes like that. The lowest now seems to be $75 or someone at $69.99 + tax (for me that made it ~$75).

Love it. Would of loved to have been there or able to see pics. Missed seeing pallets of junk wax in Costco as a kid. I always assumed major wax dealers hold back stock for the future. If you can afford to do so and know what you're doing, why not.

Thanks! Yeah I was very happy with them. I hit the Acuna in the first box and almost just stopped because I figured it could only go down - which it did but I am still happy to have the photo variation Ohtani.

Can someone pm me where to sell boxes other than via eBay? I don’t want to break B.O’s rules or become anyone’s competitor. I have a chance to purchase some boxes from a LCS for about ~$60, after reading this thread I am tempting to buy all the boxes then break some and filp some, but if selling on eBay, even for $80 per box, I still won’t make any money after fees and shipping.

I had no idea these had gone up that fast. When I saw others say $70 was a good price I thought 'what are they talking about'. I had picked up a box for a little over $50 a couple of months ago.

Well, thanks to this thread, I picked up the last two hobby box I could find for $70 and the last 6 Silver Update packs I could find.

I'm still sitting on a retail case, but I'm not sure I can hold out on the hobby.

I still have a few cases from the Blowout sale at 499. These guys still have plenty, don't let the market manipulation fool you guys.

Nice. Wish I could find a case for less than $700. Had been meaning to pick up a case since this came out but just never bit the bullet. Oh well. I do have 4 hobby boxes Im trying to save.

but honestly, if Soto and to an extent Acuna, become hobby superstars, its not going to matter

Ive got a hobby and a retail(24ct) and a blaster case in my closet. As much as Id love to rip the hobby for a nice clear rc/10(my favorite) I have no desire to sort and store /sell the rest.

It’s 2018 Update. Hobby or Jumbo, ALWAYS worth it. The Hobby is just better, but you can’t go wrong with Jumbo@ 800 either.

I would be slightly less excited about jumbo at 800... the equivalent in hobby is when those case reach 1400-1500/each. Why? Jumbo case is 6 boxes vs hobby at 12 box cases, yet jumbo boxes each are worth only a little more than a hobby box. Frustrating!

I will forever admire how you guys can sit on wax. I've been "saving" stuff for opening day for about two weeks, and the only reason I was able to do that was because I ordered it right before I went into the hospital for some surgery last week. I do fine with just about any other vice, but wax gets opened immediately.

Sitting on wax is like marrying a supermodel but sleeping in separate bedrooms until you both turn 50 because you know she's going to be the world's hottest cougar. God bless you guys and your willpower.

I've opened 4 of my 6 hanger boxes of 18 Update , I got a vintage stock /99 , few rainbows , 1-2 Gold's , few other odds and ends , nothing crazy but yeah there's solid stuff in those and if you hit Soto/Acuna parallels you are G2G lol.

I have been holding onto two hobby cases from when they were $500.

What are the hits out of update. I pulled some Base Ohtani and Base Acuna but outside of that don't really feel like i got much worth out of it?

Those base cards are only worth like a couple dollars right?

The parallel #'d cards like Gold/Pink/Black/Independence Day, the non numbered rainbow foil

The SP and SSP cards.

I got 7 boxes during the last 15% coupon for about $47/box after the coupon. Offered $55/box on what they had and was accepted. Still have 2 boxes left to open. Nothing major hit, but still a fun rip.

A case of Hobby is going for 1K on eBay now:eek::eek:

My LCS had them for like $60 per box with the Silver pack. But that was at least a month ago and he said he still had a lot in stock. Maybe it's time to give him a call if he still have any left. lol

Always my problem. I know exactly what to buy but am horrible at knowing when to sell. I know there are a lot of theories out there, but I always end up holding due to "sell paralysis." It's benefited me in a lot of cases...but I've been burned enough to try to figure out a system that works.

FYI, I opened a jumbo case last month and pulled 10 HMT55s.

I still see a lot of retail out there, as long as that is still available that's going to slow the increase of the hobby boxes.

There are still 24 pack retail boxes for $40 available, 48 packs for $80 is not bad.

These are now long gone at $80 or less per box. Seeing them now for $100 for hobby. That same seller had his listed at $74.99 yesterday. Way over priced. Not touching this stuff anymore.
