I primarily watch documentaries as opposed to feature films these days. I have no idea why my tastes have changed so much but I'm just not that in to works of fiction anymore.
That being said, The Thin Blue Line is the best documentary I have ever seen. |
Love the king of kong

Also, if you consider Ken Burn's Baseball a documentary, which I don't see how anyone couldn't, that's one of the best as well.

Agreed, you just need a lot of spare time to watch it all, but it's the best and most complete baseball documentary out there. |
Currently airing on Starz, "Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood" is a humdinger.
"The Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession" about an early pay-TV channel Errol Morris' "The Thin Blue Line" which literally freed a man imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. "Vernon, Florida" and "Gates of Heaven" (about a pet cemetery) are a couple more classics. "Dogtown and Z-Boys" about skateboarding "The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling" by Judd Apatow "XTC: This is Pop" "The Filth and the Fury" about the Sex Pistols Many, many from the ESPN 30 for 30 line, including "Once Brothers" "OJ Simpson: Made in America" and "Idiocracy" by Mike Judge |

Dear Zachary was one of the first documentaries that made me enjoy the genre. If you haven't seen it, watch it.....heart wrenching!!
|
Oh yea Roger & Me is the name of the documentary we watched in school.
I keep searching up Mac and Me. I could not remember the name. It took me to some alien film, I recommend you don't search for it. |
Grizzly Man and Man On Wire both spring to mind.

Exactly correct. Besides everything Ken Burns has ever made, An Honest Liar which is about a modern day Houdini (debunker of frauds) is amazing! I'd also highly recommend: Aphago which is about Google Deepmind taking on the world Go champion |

Completely agree. If you are any sort of video game fan, especially old school arcades, King of Kong a Fistful of Quarters is one of the best documentaries I have watched. - Finders Keepers on Netflix is worth the watch and Perfect Bid, the Man Who Knew to Much which was about the Price is Right was really, really, interesting. |
Grizzly Man and Man On Wire both spring to mind.
Grizzly Man was awesome. Best part was the Native guy basically saying he had it coming for thinking he could do what he did for as long as he did. |
World War II in Colour

Didn't see anyone mention Exit Through the Gift Shop. That's a great one.

For sure Grizzly man, supersize me and Ken Burns name it!

"Marwencol" was solid, despite the recent Steve Carell bomb, "Welcome to Marwen" that was based on it.
"Blackfish" the bane of SeaWorld "Pumping Iron" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno "The Loving Story" about an interracial marriage in 1958, then still illegal in 21 states, and its aftermath "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck" "Koyaanisqatsi" by Godfrey Reggio "The Stories We Tell" by actress Sarah Polley "The Kid Stays In The Picture" about Hollywood producer Robert Evans And a couple of HBO documentaries exploring the wild side of life: "Dope-Sick Love" "Hookers at the Point" |

did you guys see the one about roller skating on hbo recently? it was pretty good.
|
It's called "United Skates of America". I thought it was pretty moving.
The map graphic they show of rinks vanishing across the country was depressing, but the rink in my childhood town closed when I was about 9 or 10, so early 80's. Once I moved to a bigger city, about 20 miles from me, there was the (long ago) futuristically named Skate City 2000 which was able to tough it out until only a few years ago, I think. I hadn't been there in a long time. There are a lot of documentaries on the premium TV channels this time of year. An outstanding one on Fred "Mr." Rogers is on HBO currently. When I used to sell out of print VHS videos, certain documentary titles commanded a pretty penny. A couple I remember being able to resell at a big profit over what I'd bought them for (at video stores reducing their inventory, usually) include: "Scruggs" about the legendary banjo player, Earl Scruggs "Let's Get Lost" about the legendary jazz trumpeter Chet Baker "Straight Shooter" about the pop group The Mamas and the Papas "Harlan County USA", an award-winner about a labor dispute plus a couple I mentioned above, "Koyaanisqatsi" and "Pumping Iron". We were always on the lookout for those, and plenty of others. I'd usually watch them, too. I've seen a TON of documentaries over the years, from a huge range of subjects. Intellectual curiosity, an' all that.... |
If you want to go down the rabbit hole: One of the weirdest and most engrossing documentaries I've ever watched.

I know about the time I pick a favorite I would remember one I like more so I will just say one I like recently.
"808". It's the story of the TR-808 drum machine that came out in 1980. They have a ton of documentaries available with Amazon Prime. |
Ken Burns' Baseball and also NFL Network has a series called A Football Life which is really good. They also have one called The Timeline

It's hard to disagree with him, I remember Joe Rogan describing it as suicide by bear. I wonder if the audio still exists (not that I'm condoning it ever being released). Also lolz at the local sheriff saying "I just thought he was retarded". |

I also recommend King of Kong. Billy Mitchell is such a surreal person, as are some of the other people in the film. Really funny at times. Also "Into the Wind" which was a 30 for 30 featuring Terry Fox who lost his leg to cancer, then started a journey across Canada to raise funds for Cancer research running with one prosthetic leg. It is an incredibly moving story.

I'm sure Mitchell will be at the Arcade Expo next week (basically just a giant warehouse of pinball machines and video games set on free play, along with some competitions and some vintage gaming panels), as I saw him both times I went before. I'm attending this year, one day, again. Probably not too late to get tickets. It is a dream come true for people who played pinballs and video games in the 70's and 80s, especially. |
Not a big documentary person, but I enjoyed the Ronnie Coleman one (The King I think)

Does he get tons of attention? I'm sure he isn't that well liked in the community. |
Haha, well, I didn't stop Billy for an autograph or anything, but he does seem to stride purposefully through the room with his head held high.

Another brilliant documentary that I mentioned several years ago is an Israeli 4 part docuseries called Shadow of Truth. It is entirely in Hebrew and Russian with subtitles. Please don't let that sway you. It's a fascinating film that covers the murder of an Israeli girl killed in a locked school bathroom stall.

Kick out the jams!
Pretty good one on punk rock music going on now on the EPIX premium channel. It's called "Punk" and is a 4 part series airing Monday nights, with part 3 scheduled for tonight. Iggy Pop is executive producer. Part 1 featured the MC5 and Iggy & The Stooges (themselves influenced by the jangly sound of The Kinks) and the New York Dolls. Part 2 was largely on the Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and The Clash. Part 3 will look to cover the early 80's scene including the Dead Kennedys and Black Flag. Plenty of the original artists are participating in the interview portions, and because it's pay-TV, it's uncensored, which is pretty much essential for a series on this subject.

My favorite documentary. Incredibly sad. I cried several times. |
American Movie is one of my favorites. I saw the lead guy Mark at Whole Foods in Milwaukee shopping on a Sunday afternoon. I said "American Movie?". He said "yup".

There's another on Holmes from ABC's "20/20" callled "The Dropout" that just aired about a week and a half ago. It was also 2 hours, less commercials, and a nice companion to "The Inventor". It should be available free on ABC on-demand for a couple of months. |

Some of the more recent 30 for 30's have been amazing. Especially enjoyed the Two Bills about Belichick and Parcells and 42 to 1 about Buster Douglas. HBO also knows how to do documentaries. Andre the Giant and The Searcher about Elvis Presley were both outstanding. |

Those making of the album documentaries are pretty good also, just recently watched the "The Number of the Beast".

Since this got thread got started I’ve been rewatching Vietnam by ken burns, pretty amazing

"Vietnam" might be his Burns' best pure documentary, but it's very hard to watch due to the complete and utter waste of life and money the United States' involvement turned out to be, as it so tragically illustrates.

I just received one today in the mail called Sad Hill Unearthed. Fantastic, really enjoyed it, if you can find it.

Not exactly my favorite but very interesting is a 1974 British doc about Hitler and the other Thid Reich jerks called 'Swastika' that features a lot of Eva Braun's home movies of everyone. I'm pretty sure I got put on some sort of watch list for buying the DVD from ebay....
|
Just my own opinion, but Dear Zachary was an absolutely terrible documentary. Very repetitive and somewhat annoying. Would have made a better podcast than film. I turned it off with five minutes left as I found the storytelling of what happened to be atrocious.
If you want a better told story that falls along the same lines, listen to the podcast Cold about the disappearance of Susan Powell. Now that is a gut wrenching story. |
