Mike Foltynewicz is the next Max Scherzer
I just wanted to create this thread so I can look back on it 2-3 years from now to see if I was right or wrong.
I think Mike Foltynewicz has a reasonable chance to be the next Scherzer. He seems to be getting slightly better each year. He has a plus fastball and very good slider (not Scherzer good but still good), his control is improving, and he throws harder as the game goes on, occasionally touching 99-100 late in the game. Scherzer's first notable season was 2012, when he was 27-28 years old. I could see Folty's career taking a similar track. That's all. Cool story bro, etc. |
His fastball's way too hittable for how hard he can throw.

If this was any other BO member, I would say no way. But one thing I know for sure is that you are one smart guy, so I think I'm going with you on this one! :D
|
I am sure that would be possible
simply because of the fact that I sold his Superfractor for peanuts few year ago. Those things usually comes back to bite me on the rear end. But I am still rooting for him. |
His fastball's way too hittable for how hard he can throw.
It depends on the day. He's been messing with the grip, and it's got a lot more movement lately. |

Was tremendous in high school
He hit well too Been a fan since |
Hope ur right... picked him up in a keeper league (now 20th round status) 5 or 6 starts ago. Have been very happy since. I think 1 bad start but the rest have been good to great.

Buy buy buy

I don't know about the next Scherzer, but I do think he is going to be a pretty good pitcher. He's gotten better and better

Being a Braves fan I hope he continues to pitch well. He's got solid stuff and seems to be learning hot to get guys out with more regularity.
|
I think Robbie Ray is the next Scherzer but Folty is interesting as well.

Is he choosing to have another eye color in one eye too?
|
Scherzer is one of the best pitchers this decade. That's a lot to ask of any pitcher
It certainly is, but Scherzer was also relatively pedestrian over his first five years. |
I mean...as a Braves fan I hope you're right and I hope the team is smart enough to hold on to him. But that will be a pretty steep mountain to climb.
|
Then Again I thought Eovaldi was gonna be a Beast too. He throws gas just too hittable
|
Then Again I thought Eovaldi was gonna be a Beast too. He throws gas just too hittable
I always think of Eovaldi when I consider the other side of this coin. Blazing fastball, but very hittable. Folty is that way sometimes. I'm banking on him being able to keep up the recent movement on his fastball. |

ERA up almost a point since I started this thread. |
I had a similar revelation where I decided jimmy Nelson (?) was a good pitcher a few months ago. He had a sweet little 9ER outing a week ago.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nelson is a good pitcher, but sometimes it just takes time for these guys to develop consistency. Max Scherzer - 2008 (age 24) - 3.50 ERA - 2009 (age 25) - 4.12 ERA - 2010 (age 26) - 3.50 ERA - 2011 (age 27) - 4.43 ERA - 2012 (age 28) - 3.74 ERA (first full season with a K/9 > 9.0) I'm thinking Folty can get it together by the end of next season. He's still only 25. |
Who else you like, Grant? Just asking so I don't pick them up for my fantasy team :p

Never more appropriate. Let's be honest. I'm much less glad about Folty having two straight quality starts than I am about Scherzer having a bad outing. ;) |
I'm fighting very hard not to start a "Jimmy Nelson is the next Corey Kluber" thread

Nope, missed that and the red tc auto last week. Moving all week and getting ready for a baby coming is killing my eBay time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
He's got good stuff. I think he'd be a great closer. Probably not going to work out as anything more than a 5th starter.

I tend to agree. Control is the issue, and i think it's mostly mental. I've seen a lot of folks suggesting he spend some time with John Smoltz in the offseason. Smoltz was plagued by mental issues early in his career, but reigned it in and realized his full potential. He's got electric stuff, but he's still a thrower and not a pitcher. |

Best.Bump.Ever.

I actually brought up in a meeting at work earlier:
" That's all fine and good now lets talk about FOLTY!" blank faces all around :coffee: |
He may end up being a good pitcher, but I doubt his cards will ever take off due to his last name being too difficult for a lot of people to spell using the search bar on ebay.
|
Wanted to bump this thread while there's still time for me to look silly.
Folty is in his "age 27" season (assuming the Braves make the playoffs :)). In Scherzer's age 27 season, he posted a 4.43 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP, and the lowest K/9 total of his career. Just in case it wasn't clear, this is the sort of thing I had in mind when I created this thread. Scherzer was a late bloomer. Folty has almost the same potential. I was simply counting on that potential to turn kinetic, if you will. Foltynewicz has given up more than 2 ER only once this year, and the "more than" came in what was literally one bad inning against the Giants on May 4 (where Rob Friedman showed that Folty was likely tipping his pitches). Last week, Folty pitched one of the best games of his career. Unfortunately, it was only the first time this season he's pitched into the 7th inning. And that gets me to the central issue, which is still command. 4.4 BB/9, second highest in the NL. 4.3 P/PA, second highest in MLB. Just an absolute crap ton of walks and a crap ton of pitches per plate appearance. If Mike Foltynewicz can do more of what he did against the Red Sox five days ago, this may finally be the year. He currently sits at 6th in the NL in ERA. Even with the high number of P/PA, he can still throw gas late in the game (his 113th and final pitch last week was a 99.4 mph fastball). Just need to see some consistency from start to start. |
Why did you bump this before his start tonight !?
|
Why did you bump this before his start tonight !?
Lol Long term focus. He's not the next big thing this year. But maybe next year. :) |
i feel like prospecting a pitcher is the worst investment in all of sports cards..... however; when a guy has shown a plus career and you see their peak... it seems like cards can be had at very good prices
97 halladay international refractor for 150 is a fantastic buy 05 verlander bowman and topps chrome autos at like 125... steal 07 kluber bowman chrome refractors /500 for like 20 bucks... steal 08 scherzer bowman chrome base for like 5 bucks..... come on, that's ridiculous if you can buy a pitcher really low that's great... otherwise it's bad news 99.9 percent of the time |
^^^^
Absolutely agree. (Not sure about the Halladay, but other than that :)) |
Hmmm...announcers just said Folty reminds some of a young Max Scherzer...

24 pitches over the last three innings. Retired 20 in a row.
