The problem was that people including some on this thread were hyping Robert as the next Acuna (or even better, which we have seen he is NOT at this point) who was hyped as the next Trout. So out of the gate, the prices of Robert were similar if not higher at the same time as Acuna cards (Robert was the 2020 version being hyped, like Tatis was in 2019, as the next Acuna/Trout). Robert at this point is not even close to being the next Acuna...Robert is 4 months older than Acuna but Acuna has two "decent" MLB seasons/stats over Robert plus better 2020 numbers than Robert. Feel sorry for all those that bought in with their credit cards on the Robert pumpers' hype just two months ago from this thread - go back to page 4 and see what folks were saying about Robert then. 6 for 66, .091 batting average for September with 27 Ks...don't think Acuna ever went through a stretch like that.
This is the problem when people don't look at data. Acuna went 4/30 (.133) in games 35-43 games in early 2018. Kind of interesting that Robert's struggles started at game 34, in a compact season isn't it. I don't believe Robert is the next Acuna or Trout, but I believe people were making way too much of his early season success and people are making way too much of his late season struggles. As with most things, the truth is somewhere in the middle. |
Not sure what you're looking at but this season Eloy is worse than all of those in OAA and worse than all except Abreu in FanGraphs DEF. Over the course of the last 2 seasons he's 8th worst of any position in DEF and 4th worst OF. He's one of the worst in baseball and potentially threatening the top spot
Unless I don’t know how to read this, then my earlier examples of those worse than Eloy hold Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Wow just wow. Already 0-2 with 2 strikeouts. I don’t know what to say anymore.

Going to be a another rough one tonight going up against Bieber. Should be 0-4 w/ 3Ks. Not the night I would expect him to "break out" if you are hoping for it. |

This really is a MONUMENTAL slump. I don't recall seeing anyone in this big a funk. Well, maybe Chris Davis. |

Go to the Fielding tab here, not Batting: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=150&type=1&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2020-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31&sort=26,a |

The fielding tab I find doesn’t work... for instance it only shows something like 20% of the qualified players. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My big call last night that would he would make contact today was too ambitious |

Every player goes through slumps, no player swings as much as Robert does. |
For everyone freaking out, like I said last week, I can pretty much guarantee the Cubs will bring Robert out of his funk. Has the ROY ship sailed? Yes, about 2 weeks ago. If he heats up in the playoffs on the national stage, we'll be right back to where we were a month ago.

Does no player swing as much? There are many that swing more often including a recent MVP. He's also better than half the league in BB%. Doesn't seem like his plate discipline is "so far" from other players. |
I just want his prices to come down to Earth. The hype (driven mostly by speculators) he had coupled with his strong showing the first 35-38 games drove his prices to and beyond the level of HOF-calibur players...just absurd.
I hope he develops into a perennial all-star, but his prices need to be more realistic. |

Couple that with really low contact %'s and you've got an awful combo. So to answer your question, yes he does swing at crap as much as anyone. Which recent MVP has tendencies like this? Jeff Francoeur 2.0.
But I didn't know prospects could bust! I thought everyone was a Juan Soto. |
Its really no comparison:
Outside zone swing rate: 31% (league avg) vs 44% LR Strike Zone swing rate: 69% vs 81% Outside Contact rate: 63% vs 46% Zone contact rate: 85% vs 75% Overall contact rate: 76% vs 61% Swinging Strike rate: 11% vs 23% He's multiple standard deviations away from the avg player in the wrong direction for all of these stats. This is why there are many of us that question the hype. Its not that he's slumping or we're rooting against him, its that there are huge red flags. He's further away from the avg on the bad side than Soto is on the good side. |

i can't wait to bump this thread this time next year

What do you mean? |
He will be fine. Most of the young guys haven't adjusted well this year. This season will end up going to the veterans.
Will he be a mega star? Before the season, Keith Law compared him to Starling Marte. Comparison looks fine to me. |

If he's Starling Marte everyone is going to lose their shirts |

Well, he is a good fielder... plenty of teams have players that are good fielders but shoddy at the plate... look at JBJ or Robles My guess is he has a role, it just won’t be primarily due to an offensive strength Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
had a really good friend connected with one of the AL teams tell me he's Raul Mondesi. So far, maybe he's Mark Whitten? I wouldn't write him off yet, plenty of time to develop discipline, but wasn't Puig hot for 30-40 games before we all realized what he was?

Omg we need to stop losing

Lefty
Puig was redhot for 40-50 games and finished a stellar rookie year with something like 20 homers in a 100 or so games, also batted way above .300... |
