Honestly, not sure they move much. In general, baseball cards don't seem to gain during the actual season unless he's like the run away MVP leader. I think we just came out of this COVID fueled surge in prices that set a new floor for the hobby. I think we see a return to slow and steady gains on star players.

I could be totally out of touch, but historically $50-100 per year was great. Mike Trout was only like $500 in 2018.

Picked up a neophyte atomic which showed up today to finish my atomic bb set.

So Tatis and Soto didn’t move much during the season last year?

Last season was part of the COVID surge. Hard to use that as a historical norm.

Acuna blew up during his monster 2019? I mean I’m not trying to poke a giant hole in what you said but obviously things move accordingly with performance, that’s what the season is for. And exponentially so in the playoffs.

Sure, but the year Soto won the WS in which he was an absolute stud in the playoffs these cards were selling for $60-75 the month or two after the WS win. At the time, that was relatively high for a base card.

The initial surge in players like Acuna and Tatis and even Soto comes as a result of everyone trying to hop on the train. Everyone is expecting Soto to have a monster year and some of that is already baked into the price.

To clarify, I think they increase but I don't think they increase $1,250+.

Perhaps not. But to say a monster year would move his cards 10-20%, man you just don’t know the market we are in. They’ll be near double by June if he has a hot first half.

monkeymcgee 02-19-2021 08:24 PM

I think HMT55 PSA 10s will be over $1k by July and $1.5k by end of the season. You're going to start getting a lot bigger buying pool as more people recognize Juan's status in the game. He also has the swagger and personality that will appeal to younger general sports fans.

You could be totally right. I'm not sure how to handle the covid market. If covid never happened I don't think these cards would even be $200 yet. But we are also in a market where if he goes 0-2 with 2 walks in the first game people might panic sell lol. I'll probably pick up one of the HMT55's just in case.

Seems like a good idea. And to be clear, i only have one HMT55 base PSA 10.
I do happen to have a couple refractors and a pink as wel, so let’s rise those too!!

And the market we are in now may not exist if everything is back open by June. Pent up demand for travel/entertainment mean less cash for cards.

Again, just playing devils advocate, why aren't they at those prices now? What more "proof" do people need? Look at the NBA for an example, Luka and Zion are both having great years and their cards aren't doubling. Why would Soto? We all expect Soto to have a monster year and I think a lot of that is already baked into the prices.

I think you have a pretty good supply/demand balance right now. We have to remember we're in a bit of a bubble here--we know Soto, we think he's great. The average sports fan barely knows Mike Trout. Soto with a MVP-like year could start getting the kind of attention that will bring in money from buyers who focus on other sports and will disrupt that balance with a surge in demand.

I do agree with that. Hopefully MLB can market Soto better than Trout.

So in a little over 5 weeks from now we can expect 40% growth?

more like 8-9 weeks. oh yea! you seem like you know the hobby. surprised you dont see this.

jjrpilot 02-19-2021 08:49 PM

I'm a sucker for anything that matches Soto's uni color.

This just arrived in the mail today. I try mainly to collect rookies, but I've made an exception for the Sapphire Rookie Cup and now this Red Foil Opening Day Rookie Cup.

2019 Topps Opening Day Rookie Cup Red Foil. Not a ton of these for a 2nd year card (two currently on eBay.)

Trust me I hope you're right and I'm wrong. I just get skeptical of continued 40% growth every couple months. But hey, let's all get rich together. :)!

no kidding! Especially us true collectors that pack pulled 30+ hmt55’s in 2018 and still holding! :)!

I've said in the past, my biggest regret is selling any Soto. I vividly remember passing on them when they were $8.50 because I was firm at $8/each. I thought I did it right, buy low and sell when he won a WS...boy was I wrong.
