The tv presentation was awful with the split screen. I don't know if they do it this way to justify the ticket price but its way too long. 2 rds max. Has anyone gone in person? Is a 3hr hr derby really that entertaining?
If you add it all up, the actual time spent batting is under an hour. Just like the actual time of an NBA game is 48 minutes or football is 60 minutes. Everything else is done for rest, media, advertisement, entertainment. If you are going to drive downtown sit in traffic, park, walk to the stadium, wait in line to get in, then wait in a food line, then go to your seat...you want to be there for awhile. Nobody wants to run to the bathroom and grab a hotdog only to realize they missed 25% of the show.

I went in Cleveland and it didn't feel long at all. I also walked around, met up with friends, had some drinks, enjoyed some food. I had no interest in being rushed out of there for a quicker show.

In the past how did it work, it was during the day, 1 rd, but did they do other stuff along side it?

auctionjmm 07-15-2025 10:26 AM

I will add that I don't like the Statcast tiebreaker. Sans the 6-paragraph scientific explanation on the last page, I think if two guys tie, they should swing it off. Raleigh and Rooker each get 3 outs, most HR advances. Something like that.

Futures Game, Celebrity Softball Game. I believe that was all done in one event.

That's what I remember. I was actually thinking there would be a Celebrity softball game after the derby based on a vague memory of it being that way in the past.
Byron Buxton +750
Matt Olson +950
Junior Caminero +1000
Brent Rooker +1000

$100 on each and you should be happy when the night is done!
Are we happy?!

kidfan9 07-15-2025 11:18 AM

Yes…player at 10/1 odds made the finals. I made a prediction before the event and one of my picks made the finals. Win some lose some.

I see you didn’t make a selection before the derby…Monday morning quarterbacking is easy.

They moved those events to the weekend since the team that hosts the ASG plays away. Futures Game and Celebrity Softball Game were Saturday. HR Derby Monday.

The year I went was awesome. It was before the nets were extended and I intentionally bought 1st row seats knowing I would have "dibs" over the crowd. Most of the celebs were happy to come over and sign/take photos. The prospects were as well. I don't hound for autos like I did as a kid but for something like this I felt it was appropriate and I wouldn't need to leave my seats. The ones I remember were Anthony Mackie, MGK, Max Greenfield, Quavo, Johnny Bananas, Colton Underwood (who was the Bachelor at that time), Joe Thomas, Drew Carey, Jennie Finch. It was cool just getting to shake hands and meet a bunch of people I had saw on tv. Tickets were cheap too. I bet I paid less for resale tickets than what the stadium charged. It's not nearly as popular as the Derby, but it was still a fun day out.

I had Junior as well but got greedy and didn't hedge. I could have easily put a live bet on Raleigh at $125 and guaranteed a +500 payout but I said "No Deal" and promptly won nothing haha. That's how it goes.
According to this graphic, MLB can measure distance down to 1.2 ten-billionths of an inch.

This is approximately 2.54 picometers

As 1 inch = 25.4 mm and 1 mm = 10^9 nm

1/12,000,000,000 inch ≈ 2.54 × 10^-12 meters = 2.54 pm

For some perspective, the diameter of an oxygen molecule is 292 pm, or 114.96 times larger than what MLB can supposedly measure with statcast.

A single oxygen atom, though, is only 59.84 times large than this supposed measurement.

Now, because I am a loser, and I hate being lied to, I have done some research...

To measure something that small, between 1–10 picometers, one would require either Atomic Force Microscopy or X-ray Crystallography, which, to the best of my knowledge, are used to study differences between cancer cells and healthy cells, create designer drugs, or improve materials for technology by revealing details about atoms and molecules.

More precisely, they would need something like Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, which can detect how much atoms wiggle. Again, using oxygen as our example, this is between 2-3 picometers—look at that! MLB's 2.54 pm accuracy falls right in there!

BUT here's the problem...

Statcast is fundamentally incapable of achieving measurements at the picometer scale, such as the implied 2.54 picometer example provided by MLB below.

Statcast relies on a combination of X-band Doppler radar (operating at 8-12 GHz with a wavelength of 25-37.5 mm) and high-speed stereoscopic cameras to track baseballs and players in real-time across the stadium. These systems are designed for macroscopic measurements, with a practical accuracy of about one inch (25.4 mm) for batted ball distances, though it is accurate down to about 0.1 inches (2.54 mm) on balls at the plate.

Regardless, the picometer scale (those decimals furthest to the right in the graphic) is roughly 10^10 times smaller than even Statcast’s best resolution.

In fact, measuring anything so small is pretty much impossible without the aforementioned technology and a stable, vacuum sealed lab with no air, absolute zero temperature (-452°F), and zero vibration.

...now, Atlanta isn't THAT bad... or was it, @Brent_Rooker25?

All of this, after all that wasted time and banked new, useless knowledge, just to say...

Oh, and my lawyer still says this stuff is my opinion.
bravo seriously

I’d like to see a Bunt Derby. Bunting is a lost art. Maybe put it on the Ocho for the 2026 All Star game?

Why stop there. Why not have an eephus pitch contest while we're at it
