[QUOTE=yoyosh;16809892]I was a big fan when 2018 Chronicles came out, just liked the Select/Prizm cards.
Sold off a ton but kept these...looks like a lot of these shiny "PJ" cards have dried up though. Any idea what current value might be for these? Why would one choose the PSA 10 prizm sticker auto for $1k when you can have a bowman best psa 10 licensed on card auto for less? |

A question for the ages....Why would anybody pay anything for any card? I think this particular card sale has to do with it being Soto's "Prizm" auto rc and the mere scarcity of the card. You have many non baseball buyers looking to buy Soto right now and they know the Prizm brand is highly popular in other sports, so they are buying up all Soto Prizm rcs right now. No logos is not stopping anybody these days. When a Soto Prizm Blue ice can sell for over $430 recently, and a sticker auto raw can sell for $450, that tells you all you need to know. There is no logic to what people will pay for these days. The data shows that Soto Prizm is in high demand right now |

Well said. The scarcity of his RCs drives that demand too. Someone like Acuna won’t have the Prizm appeal because of his saturated RC market. |

i dont agree with this. |
I think very rarely does linear logic apply to the hobby market. There's a guy on CU who, once every few months, makes a post asking the board's help explaining to him why Card A sells for more money than Card B when there is a 1/20 the amount of PSA 10s for Card B than there are for Card A.
Demand can be a difficult thing to figure out in any market but in a collectibles market? Yeesh. So many variables all in motion at the same time. We can lean on past results with great confidence in some instances and then in other cases it's as if we're Apollo 13. When I think about how my own personal demand trajectory changed over time.... First, I was only searching for '19 Flawless Tatis because they were dirt cheap and Tatis has limited choices in '19 (nowhere near like Soto in '18 but abnormally low). Then I started picking up the Optic Rated Rookie Tatis because they were dirt cheap and I liked the image and all the different parallels. Next thing I know, Vladdy is hot and I'm searching for his pajamas. Then, oh yeah, I forgot, Juan Soto is absurdly good and I need to get a lot more of his cards for my PC and I keep seeing people in the thread posting his Prizm and Select cards. Slowly, the Prizm grows on me and I start buying. About a week ago I bought a Select Red. Now, I'm tearing into my Chronicles unopened stash like a junkie. I need to buy more Soto but I also need to grab some Acuna before people start pooping turkeys in the Acuna thread again because that WILL be starting up soon. Now, I basically just shop for everything Panini and Leaf in baseball from 2018-2020. How did this happen? Should I have just stuck with Topps? And where am I?* Arthur *Naked Gun reference for you younger folk. |

Something like the market for Soto PJ cards is so illiquid that I think this thread could be the exact reason for a lot of the recent price action. I def know I will be tempted to make comments here like "I sure do think x card is way underrated and undervalued" when time comes for me to unload some of my obscure PJ and TBT Soto stash. |
Got my two Update Chrome Mega Boxes in today.
My intent was to leave both sealed and sell in a few years when I’m broke from card purchases. But alas, one box came in with some damage so I decided what the heck... First 5 packs didn’t have anything more interesting than an Acuna insert worth maybe a couple dollars. However, the second to last pack (which I saved for last) had an autographed X Fractor /125 peeking out the side. Slow rolled it from bottom to top... Rhys. Hoskins. Dam. |

Yeah they’re good looking for sure. And it’s possible that I can sell it for a halfway decent price if he ever gets hot again. But dang that coulda been huuuuuge. |
Hoskins was ripping it up for several weeks until the arm injury at 1st base

Did fairly well on the other RC: Flaherty RC Ohtani RC (Rookie debut) Torres RC (Rookie Debut) That will do. |

Yes...and that's why there are various brands of cards each year for any given player despite how some argue the hobby may be better off with less brands to chose from. When collectors get priced out of a particular brand like Topps flagship, but still want rookie year/2nd/3rd year cards of their favorite player, they can gravitate to a lesser/off brand at a much lower entry price. Not everyone can afford the first bowman chrome auto or a flagship RC black/indy parallel. Then there's those who have all the higher end parallels and base versions and want to collect more cards of the same player...so there again the "off" brands offer an alternative. As long as a particular player is "collectible" by many and sought after, sooner or later even the off brand cards of that player will gather interest and become "collectible" and demand starts to go up (amount of product will have some effect on the demand so as long as a product is not mass produced). I will add though if prices of an off brand starts to exceed a similar licensed card, then it's an easy choice to go with the licensed card with logos. So there is a ceiling to how high an off brand card can go typically unless there is an anomaly such as a very successful pump campaign. |
Heh...god damn Rhys
