Very nice - congrats!
Are these not numbered, then..? Would love to know how many are out there
Yes, they are the gold colored parallel because of the gold colored background and are numbered to 50. When they released in 2015, they dried up quick. This is mine. Does anybody know the estimated print run of this card below. It's unnumbered. It's the non auto NNOF parallel of Trout from the same release. Topps did not do auto parallels of the NNOF. I haven't seen this NNOF for sale in a long time |
Here are a few cards just back from PSA this week:
First - I've been working on the 2012 Topps Chrome Rainbow in PSA 10. Missing the Super (haven't seen that one - hope to find it one day, but not holding my breath), and then also Gold and Sepia (which I have in PSA 9, but haven't found in Gem just yet). Well...we can now scratch the Sepia off the list! Woot! Bought this one raw on eBay about a month ago...and honestly thought it had an outside chance at a 10...but wasn't expecting it. Then...I also bought a Black Refractor BGS 9.5 awhile back. The case was badly scratched and looked like crap...but the card looked pretty nice, so I cracked it and sent it in and got lucky. This one is Pop 6 in PSA 10...and I have subbed two of the six. Would gladly trade this card and a gold PSA 9 for a gold PSA 10! Love the black with red pinstripe border - such a stunning card! Finally - bought this one raw, and thought it had a very good chance at Gem. Perhaps just a bit too much edge wear on the back...? That's all I can see here.
That Venezuelan is awesome! |

Is it an unofficial numbering because the actual card is not numbered. Unofficialy SP to 25? |

Unofficial. Odds are 1:1008 and the golds are 1:504 so the math works out for /25 though. |

There was a pretty epic thread on the old freedom cardboard website (i think) that went into great detail about how a group of collectors came about discovering how that error came into place. It was a great read if you had a few hours to kill. Spoiler: Apparently, something landed on the Printing plates for that sheet of cards that ended up taking out a chunk of black from a bunch of cards. By serendipity, it just so happened to take out Frank Thomas' name and no one elses. Edit: Here you go if youve got a few hours to kill https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/709331/1990-topps-frank-thomas-nnof-revisited-introduction-to-my-theory |

that diagram is great! first i have seen it. not sure if anyone cares but there should also be the faintest of black missing from the middle of the “T” in whitesox at the top of the card on legit nnofs. considering the type of printing breakdown that occurred and how early or late each individual card was stamped determined how prominent this is on it. ie, a lot of talk about this particular card that has surfaced which could be the last card printed before the full nnof took effect but explains the varying degree of the feature in the “T”. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1990-TOPPS-414A-414-FRANK-THOMAS-ROOKIE-RC-RARE-ERROR-NNOF-TRUE-1-1-MUST-READ/372496340533?hash=item56ba831635:g:6iwAAOSw86NbzlPr anyways, the black missing vaguely resembles the bottom half of a “u” going through it. edited: cant really tell in the diagram because its covered up with font, but i did a close up of my signed card to get closer to that “T” i was referring to. even now, still kind of hard to see here. in hand, its much more apparent and one of the things to look for since the scammers attempted to get wise and started leaving out the black in other notable areas, like the shoe, nameblock areas and lines.
In his prime seasons, Trout has been a top 4 MVP on a yearly basis. Does he have a amazing skill set, best in baseball. Does he have flaws, sure, his arm isn't that strong and has let lazy fly balls land in front of him. Those can be overlooked.
What some of the other multiple MVP winners did was be more consistent during their decade of dominance was performing in High Leverage opportunities. Trout in his prime run has twice now been at the bottom (2013 & 2018) in this crucial aspect of the game. Trout had a great 3 year run 2014-2016. He won his two MVP's that stretch while having the closest ballot for second place. A coincidence ? Still a wonderful talent to watch.
As I stated previously, I don't know a ton about High Leverage stats. I've tried to educate myself and I had a few questions and thoughts. When looking at Trout's '18 Clutch stat on Fangraphs he was doubly awful, -2.30. For those not familiar, -1.00 is awful per Fangraphs. Likewise Betts and Yelich were not clutch either, based on this stat, but they were far closer to neutral than Trout. Clutch is based on how a player plays in high leverage situations compared to how they play in context neutral situations. At least I think that is my understanding. So if a player normally hits .300, but hits .300 in high leverage situations they would not be considered clutch. I'm not sure if I totally agree with that. It punishes the player that normally plays great. I'd rather see how clutch a player is compared to the league, not them self, but that's just me. Not surprisingly, Trout, Betts, and Yelich finished in the top 3 in context neutral wins, which explains why they have a high hurdle to prove their clutchiness. Which leads me to this, is a high leverage run weighted more than a low leverage run in reality? Games are won or lost over 9 innings. If a team wins by one run, then they needed every run scored to win that game, even if one of those runs were scored in a low leverage situation. Maybe Clutch already takes this into account? It's all fascinating stuff to me and I appreciate you brining it to my attention. |

Trout fans please pardon the temporary derailment... This is my favorite illustration of the Thomas no-name printing issue. (The substance making the stain blocked the ink from adhering to the plate, hence no black on cards in the sheet where the stain was.) So I walked into a Comic Book & Sports Card store today. Most of their customers are into comics and just a small fraction go there for sports cards. I just wanted to pick up some card supplies and decided to look at their baseball cards (singles). I saw a stack of Mike Trout cards at the back corner of the display case, so I asked if I can look at it. In the stack of inexpensive Trout cards was this 2012 Topps Chrome Orange Refractor and it had a $25 sticker on it. I knew it was worth more than $25, but I didn’t want to look it up while the employee was standing in front of me.. so I bought it. When I got home, I saw them selling close to the $50 range! I’m guessing it has been sitting there for years and forgotten with an out dated price tag. Today is a good day!

Love black Refractors! I have been able to steer clear of them thus far, but I won’t be surprised when I finally cave and start chasing them.
