**The Perennial MIKE TROUT Thread**
Well this just got awkward. Haha
That is a pretty cool gig. If you are cool with going into it further, how did you become involved? FWIW, I love the cards. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I did Museum Sketches back in 2013 and they really liked my work so they offered it to me. I also was the artist for the first two years of Museum Football (including doing the art for the boxes with Bo Jackson and Barry Sanders). I’ve Ben doing sketch cards for Topps since. Haven’t done as much lately in BB mostly in Star Wars. I actually was asked to do the Bowman sketches last year as well as Gallery but my health started hindering me so I had to turn those sets down. And thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Lol... I actually am the artist who drew the artwork used for these cards. This is one of 8 cards that were a part of the Wrapper Redemption that year at the National. I drew these as 5x7s and then Topps scanned them and reprinted them. There is a Harper, Frank Thomas and Ernie Banks as well. Did 4 FB too... but we won’t mention who they were
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I am so sorry. I never meant the artwork wasn’t good, I was talking about the “overall look” of the card was unappealing. Topps gave it just a white boarder and The National Convention logo on the bottom right. That, to me, didn’t give it such an appealing look. But great job on the artwork and congrats on Topps using it for a card. Again, I meant no disrespect to your artwork. |

Oh I didn’t take it as disrespect. I think the cards design was weak too. It’s all good Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Thanks, Mike! Yeah, I was watching it for a while too. It took a really long time for the seller to finally give in and sell it to me for my offer. He actually accepted my offer while I was on vacation at Disney World (Florida). I remember how shocked I was when he took it while I was in the middle of watching a Nemo show with the family.. lol. |

Reggie just likes that card so much cause he can stare at Trout's butt. :)!

Here's a couple of interesting Mike Trout stats I came across on twitter...
Mike Trout's 2018 season: Best OPS+ by a qualified hitter since Barry Bonds (2004) Best OPS+ by a qualified CF since Mickey Mantle (1961) Best OPS+ by a qualified CF with 20+ SB since Ty Cobb (1917) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Here’s a list of players in MLB history with 200 HR, 150 SB, and a .400 OBP through their first 8 seasons: Mike Trout That’s it. Trout has 240 HR, 189 SB, and a .416 OBP. |

There are a lot of players who over the years have put up really nice seasonal numbers, even for a few seasons. Every decade has seen hem. Players get hot and have their 4-5 year span where they are “the hottest player on the planet etc”. But each decade has also had a group of guys who are all time greats. They win a few MVPs and otherwise are consistently at the top each year and put up HOF numbers over 75-80% of their 15-20 year career. And then there are the legends - the players who from day one create a “we have never seen this kind of talent before” vibe.
Trout is that type of player. Since he came up he has performed comparable to anyone who has played the game before. There are no slump years. There was no sophomore jinx. Over his 7 years he has arguably been considered the best in the game. Maybe not the best player that year but an overall status. Mantle, Williams, Aaron, Mays, Ruth, Musial, Griffey - on and on. They didn’t win every MVP, but they were at their times, the best. There were the occasional “great seasons” or stretches where guys lit up the stat sheets, but those handful of greats steadily built iconic careers and set a bar some have still never reached. Trout could fade, he could lose his swing, get injured irreparably and end up an average player for the next 10+ years. But as of now, he is in the class above all other players. There is not one single player who is in that class with him. Some visit the level with extraordinary seasons (Betts this year) but most come and go. What we are witnessing is something that is rare and amazing to watch unfold. A good season or two doesn’t make a player an all time great (Maris and Dale Murphy won BTB MVPs and are not in the HOF). There is no telling how good Betts, Judge, JD, Yelich, Arenado etc may be historically, but Trout has already reached that level. Some say his boring, some say he’s not the face of the game, but one day what will not be denied is the mark he will have left in the game as a legend. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
