It's really pretty simple. The major dealers are all on the East Coast. This is why it never crosses the Mississippi. But additionally I don't see Vegas ever happening because gambling takes away from the money people can spend on cards.
Such a ridiculous take. The Vegas population has grown so much over the past 10 years. People can gamble or do stupid things anywhere. Everyone is just making excuses. The amount of families that have moved to Henderson and Summerlin proves how Vegas has changed. Hasn’t the National been in trashy Atlantic City? |
You can scroll through the dealer list and see where the majority of dealers are from.
Are there any larger regional shows on the west coast with more than a few years of history…there’s a TON of them on the easy coast. |
get on a plane, its not going out west.

This right here. |
Perhaps...
But it SHOULD happen once every 4-5 years.....the National SHOULD be rotated around the different regions of the country...
Sound good I’ll be dead before this happens But keep it up |

Absolutely apples to apples |

Atlantic City is not even closely related to Vegas lol. AC was very uncomfortable to even step outside. |
Obviously biased, but Cobo in Detroit all day. My reserved parking spot is within walking distance.
Detroit can still get really hot in August fwiw. |

If not for the location, Vegas would be an obvious choice for a National. Most everyone has a casino with 100 miles of them anymore and some states even have legalized online casinos (not to mention sports betting) so I don't buy into the argument that people would spend less on cards there. Vegas has TONs of cheap hotel rooms and the monorail and underground tesla tunnels run right to the newly expanded convention center from the strip. However, every single one of the big wax dealers are located in the east and that is a big deal as they bring ton of inventory and have a strong say. Vegas is also very union and I don't know if that plays into the choice of not hosting there. One other knock on Vegas, it is commonly 110 degrees at the end of July there. |

And I'll absolutely take 110 in Vegas over a humid, 90+ Atlanta in late July/early August. Selfishly, I'm hoping for Detroit 6.5 hour drive to Chicago vs 3.5 hour drive to Detroit Without a doubt the biggest reason it's not going out west is the travel for the biggest dealers/corporations isn't feasible. They're not going to fly the amount of inventory out that way and they're not going to plan for a 2,500+ mile semi-truck drive each way. |

As being the same as having 100 casinos, within 100 yards while in Vegas. If Atlantic City didnt outright buy their inclusion on the circuit, they never would have gotten in the rotation. It was/is an issue when people with cash and free time end up at a multi-day show in a major gambling town. And then have less/no money for cards and junk at a show. Vegas only has 4 spaces big enough to support a National. The Forum, behind Harrahs. But that would just be linked ballrooms, and not a good setup. The Mandalay Bay or Venetian (Sands) Convention centers. Both would work, the Sands would be more ideal as their space in continuous. Or the actual LV Convention center. But all 3 of those, would cost at least twice as much to book as AC, Cleveland or Rosemont. And the Union concessions I hear, are stupid expensive. |
Was just in Atlanta and at the Georgia World Congress Center for a massive club volleyball tournament. Stayed at the Westin which from a walking standpoint is a couple blocks and walk straight through Olympic Park and into C Building of the GWCC. Entered right beside the College Football Hall of Fame.
The tournament was utilizing Building A and C. I walked between the buildings one day and I believe its close to 3/4 of a mile between the 2. The place is huge but not sure what a continuous square footage would be and would be curious if they had to break it up between the buildings. You don't have to go outside to traverse between the buildings so its not that difficult to get from one to the other (just some distance). This tourney had around 125 volleyball courts all going at the same time. Around 75 going at one time in Building A and 50 going at one time in Building C. We parked in a parking deck right beside the Westin. We parked some time Friday evening and left out some time Sunday morning and paid around $90 total for that complete time. |
Fwiw, Detroit's proposed venue is a 20 minute walk from Greektown Casino and a short Uber ride from two other casinos. Not the same level as Vegas, obviously- but there's still plenty of gambling close by.
|
Seriously most of the people complaining won't even get out of the hotel or convention center for 90% of the day. The closest thing most of us get to 'touching grass' during the National is walking to a bar or restaurant across the street or going outside to wait for an Uber.

20 minute walk? Forget that. Both have attached people mover stations. Don't know what it will be in 2028 but it's currently free. Used to be 75 cents per ride. |

Yes, you could certainly do that too if you don't want to walk. |
It really is a matter of cost and logistics.
NSCC requires a certain amount of space and a specific range of dates. A majority of convention centers fitting the timeline & space requirements are either very expensive or require a commitment for too long or scheduling too far out. I'm familiar with both the Detroit & Atlanta options and believe both offer many positives. It will be interesting to see how the NSCC vote goes for 2028 between the two.
This should be pinned!! Funny how people just keep naming cities thinking that’s all it takes. Many places are too small or won’t book out 3 years. The group has looked into a lot of locations. Detroit (Novi) was looked into years ago. Too small. The new Detroit location has been renovated and there is supposed to be an attached hotel opening in 2027. The downtown area the show would be is not a high crime area. Even in the 80’s I would go down to the hotels there for graphing after night games. Also, the city really wants the show so I expect there will be a positive police presence. Looking forward to hearing the Detroit proposal at the National. Bonus if the Tigers are in town. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I seriously hope that Atlanta gets the bid. It has great venues and hotels to stay at. The airport is convenient with direct flights everywhere. In my opinion, it checks all the boxes and makes perfect sense.

Every time I’ve been in the Atlanta airport, it smelled worse than 4 day old General Tsos. |

If I had a vote for a city west of the Mississippi it would be Denver, CO for the National.
