Also an FYI:

The IRS recently released guidance on 2024 reporting. Calendar year 2024 will be regarded as a transition year, but there is a phase-in for the reporting threshold. 1099-K reporting will be required for aggregate payments exceeding $5,000 for 2024, regardless of the number of transactions. Calendar year 2025 will be regarded as the final transition year, with a reporting threshold of $2,500, again regardless of the number of transactions. In 2026, the $600 reporting threshold is scheduled to be implemented.
Madison WI card shows has been really good, a year ago it was consistently 120 tables and maybe 2 or 3 of them were Pokémon, in the last 6 months they upped it to 140 tables, and I'd say about 60 of them are Pokemon
Wow that's a much higher percentage than I would have expected. I heard Pokémon went crazy during Covid but thought it died off a couple of years ago. Guess I was wrong. Haven't been to a card show in 3-4 weeks and the last one was advertised as "cards and collectibles". Roughly half of the show was Pokémon or TCG tables.

Time for all the 40 yr olds to start researching Pokemon. lol

Biggest difference I have seen is unlike sports cards one character can be worth hundreds one release $.50 the next release and the release after that could be $500. There is no rhyme or reason as to which characters are valuable from release to release. And there aren't usually obvious signs like numbering, autos, and words like " Rare, Color, Error " printed in bold giant letters.

Then you have other TCG games like Lorcana and One Piece that are growing in popularity as well in addition to the tried and true like Yu-Gi-Oh and MTG.

Sounds like you need to do some research.

2 Local NEOhio shows this weekend. They were both very, very busy. Set up at one on Saturday and did phenomenal. Show was busier than normal until later than normal and today's show was packed to the gills as well. Nice to see a healthy marketplace after Xmas.

40 year-olds were 12 when Pokemon was first released. They should be the ones doing the teaching at this point.

Bcr 12-29-2024 10:50 PM

Pokemon is easier to set collect, wax prices are reasonable, the big cards can be pulled in all formats, there's only a handful of releases each year. Sports cards is the complete opposite currently

I may owe this thread an apology. I'll know for sure in the next 48-72 hours.

Alright maybe a partial apology is necessary. The hobby might not be dying just yet. I recently consigned about 25 cards because I'm too lazy to ebay them myself, plus I still refuse to give ebay my bank account information. I wont bore you with too many details but the auctions ended for about 2-5x what I was expecting. One card I was sure wouldn't get more than $40-50 went for over $300. No shilling because I don't bid on my own crap. Was worried about others possibly pushing prices up because they own it and don't want to see any end at low prices but all the auctions got paid for except one (the cheapest one sold).

So sorry I repeatedly claimed the market was dead or dying, it's not. However, there is this so I'm thinking I've gotta be close to being right soon.

Local card shop, not one of the biggies. I don't trust USPS enough to ship a bunch of cards somewhere.

Last unpaid item was paid today. Looking forward to my newfound riches.

went to joliet, IL show last sunday, 170 tables.

as others have said, at least 40-50% pokemon. to be fair, they moved from
a smaller venue that catered to pokemon also. so, maybe it's the promoter.

could not find a parking spot for 15 minutes at a large (fairly) upscale hotel.

show was JAM-PACKED, could not walk up and down the aisles.

made three small purchases from 3 different dealers, vintage was very scarce.

can't speak to exactly what the shiny stuff was (besides pokemon) b/c i don't
collect ANY of the current stuff.

also can't speak to "money changing hands" b/c i really wasn't paying attention.

post-christmas, relatively warm day (a little rain) probably not a whole lot else to do. (bears were off, "played" thur. night)

crowd was absolutely nuts busy. ask anybody who was there.

I’m gonna stop by the show at the Rio this weekend at some point Saturday, will report back.

Yes, it was. Were you set or attending either or both?

No, I went to a local show in the Uniontown Mall. Good show, was in the lower floor of the old Bon-Ton.

:)!

Put a card on Ebay for auction and some clown messaged me telling me I'm going to screw up comps for auctioning it below all the buy it nows listed. What a time to be alive. Can't wait to have them bid it up then not pay for it.

A) he is a clown

B) though he’s probably right

C) why did you post that in a card show thread?

dodgerfanjohn 01-05-2025 06:06 PM

People really do need to be careful what they auction. There’s certain things that will sell at BIN that people auction and they go for far less. I have a listing up where the two most recent BIN are in the $120 range, which is absurdly high, but then two auctions in the past month went for less than $60, which is a steal. It’s an item that never ever should be auctioned.

Have to disagree. If a 3-6 day auction ends then that is what it is worth. This stuff is only worth what someone is willing to pay. If I have a bin listed for months then it’s not worth what I trying to sell it for. Sure I can keep it listed and it MIGHT sell, but if I want to sell something an auction will tell me what it’s worth right now.

But Dodger isn’t making the argument you seem to be claiming he’s making. Read his post again.

KhalDrogo 01-05-2025 07:09 PM

Cuts both ways.

I pass on BINs at prices I’d pay but I know I can be patient because others are unlikely to. Auctioning a card forces interested parties to make a decision on if they really want it.

This is hardly a card show only thread, but thanks for your concern!
