Love this move for them. I couldn't care less about Pokemon, but this is a great move based on the latest monthly gemrate data. CGC had 106k graded last month. Something like 93k is TCG. I would assume the vast majority of that is Pokemon. SGC is like the opposite in splits from Sports cards/TCG.
Last month's totals was SGC 118k and CGC 106K. If SGC can maintain on the sports cards side (very likely) and take say 10K in the Pokemon from CGC, that spread suddenly goes 128 to 96. I am guessing that SGC has 0 awareness in the Pokemon community, but now is a great time. Those collectors who hat the slab change in CGC are ripe for a full brand change. Most will go PSA, but again, you just need to keep making steady increases.
I do think that Pokemon will still be a little tough for them to gain ground in unless they do a slab change for TCG. Their slabs are bigger than PSA and CGC. When you think of the people who are buying slabbed Pokemon, you think of a younger crowd, who are going to gravitate to the more sleek design that they can stack a bunch of in their slab cases to carry around card shows. For SGC, their slabs are more about presentation. They look beautiful with a refractor or bright card inside and sitting on a display stand or inside a display case. If SGC had a slimmed down or "mini" version of their case as an option, I think they would definitely gain some TCG customers just on that. |
The march to same-day turnaround continues. Honestly consistently impressed with SGC's scale and ability to deliver - looking forward to seeing them take some of CGC's TCG market share.

I don't see them taking away much of CGC's share. CGC is basically the same price at $9.60 for most people who are elite members. $10.80 for the regular price with the $149 subscription that gives you $150 in credits. Turnaround times are decently fast as well. Maybe a few disgruntled CGC people, but most of them got over the label/grading scale change pretty quickly. |

Agree if it comes down between the 2 for TCG. The vast majority of CGC business is Pokemon, and the black insert does not work as well with those. Maybe the new silver border, massed produced, will look better. My son is the Pokémon person and in his group, PSA/BGS is it. |

In my opinion, which is not shared by some, the dull black SGC insert looks absolutely horrible with chrome cards. It is great for vintage, but I have some ultra-modern in SGC slabs and it does bother me. If SGC had a $9 grading for vintage, they would get about 50 cards from me right now. However, I am paying $9.60 for CGC and I am ok with that for my PC. I will be sending in a few cards to SGC at $15 this week. Have a few HOF 1952 Bowman that I want slabbed. CGC plastic sleeves look horrible. |
Looking forward to $5-$6/card when that happens
|
Glad I waited for the price drop. I will be sending a 25 card vintage order to SGC this week and a much bigger order later in the month. I had this one prepared already for SGC as it's mostly stuff PSA doesn't grade: Wrestling Exhibits, Gong Magazine Cards, La Folgores and a few other randos. The next order will be broader.

Surprisingly enjoying the SGC app, too. As far as the major graders go, they're definitely the most collector friendly when it comes to turnaround time, customer service, and maintaining a decent quality standard. They're not fancy or cool, but they grade cards well and I'll definitely keep submitting at these prices.

Agree. Give me quick turnaround time, good customer service, and consistent grading instead of trying to be the cool and flashy kid. PSA just did that update to their website. I know it is mostly trying to get us customers to submit cards to the vault or to their auction affiliate, but was really anyone asking for that update. Seems to me that their priorities are in the wrong place right now. |
They certainly haven't done a ton to lose my business. Quick turnarounds, competitive prices and they seem to be chipping away at market share in the mean time.
|
That's what legitimate growth looks like - some of us worried they flooded the market with cheap slabs, but really, it just looks like they gained trust with more collectors and increased familiarity/legitimacy.
|
Dropped a 25 card order in the mail today. With PSAs inconsistencies on vintage, I plan on doing more with SGC now that they lowered the price. I'm already gathering my second order for the end of the month.

Anyone else drop off with SGC at Burbank show? Dropped off on Saturday and still shows as Submitted. Curious how long it will take
|
Transit from CA to FL factored in, Burbank Show subs may have been processed as late as today, I'd imagine, depending on how many they took in.

Package received by SGC on Monday August 28th
Hasn’t moved an inch. They also have responded to my email asking if they will honor $15 per card on this order (I paid $20) |

I agree and understand your frustration. Seems like none of the grading companies really have a rhyme or reason as to what orders get done in what order. I'd like to believe being only 4 cards is what helped mine go through faster but still doesn't mean it's fair. |
Some highlights from my most recent SGC submission.
