PSA will be extra critical of the 101 with their money back guarantee on the grade. BGS doesn’t have that so they will slab nearly anything. Send it to BGS.
I decided to send my 101 Jordan to PSA through a local shop. It came out today N6 Minimum Size Requirement. Is it worth bothering to send it back to them again, or should I try BGS?
Yes, whether you view it as a good or bad thing, BGS is very lenient on the Star Co sizing. If they also say its too small, your card may well have been trimmed at some point. Like his 1986 Fleer #57, it needs to be in some kind of slab (even an Auth) to retain any real value. |
I would send it again to PSA. Given there is no cost for an N6 grade, I might send it in a couple of times more to see if you can get a number on the holder.
Doesn't PSA have tech now that can tell if it's the same card? |

Allegedly. Im not convinced it actually works.:)! |

There guarantee on the grade is a joke. Unless the card is horrendously misgraded as in they miss a stain or major paper loss you're not getting any money, or a reholder and money. They will usually stand behind their grade no matter what. They would compensate if they holder a counterfeit card.
Doesn't PSA have tech now that can tell if it's the same card?
That is a very good point. I believe they do BUT I think it is only if it has been already cracked out of a holder. This card was never put in a holder. Still for a company whose main purpose (like any other company) is to make money, why would they not want a card resubmitted as many times as possible. After all, PSA used to stand for Please Submit Again. |
PSA 9 goes for $444,000 (370k winning bid)
|
An insane number for a PSA 9. Fleer 57 PSA 9 goes for what 25K? My lord! We won’t ever see a 10 and if we do 1.5/2 million easy.
I read about the 9 popping on the Star basketball Facebook page this morning. You could find the picture of the card there in its original BGS holder but it has since been removed. From what I could gather from the page a really nice 101 was graded by Beckett earlier this year. Came back a BGS 8.5 with 9s and 9.5s for subs on surface, corners, and edges and got robbed with an 8 on centering. Centering looked really nice to me. I guess the owner recently cracked and subbed to PSA and it just came back as a 9. The picture of the card in the BGS holder looked really nice and better than most BGS 8.5s and 9s I’ve seen. I think the key is it didn’t appear to have any chipping on the corners or edges which I think PSA will punish pretty harshly. And once again, I thought the centering looked really nice, much better than most BGS 8 centering subs I’ve seen. I think if you are trying to buy a BGS 101 to regrade with PSA then Inwould focus on nice corners and edges over anything else.

A bgs 8.5 crossed to a PSA 9? I thought it would take a black label to do that
Congrats to the owner of BGS 8.5 for converting a card that was worth 35-40K into a card that is worth 440K by crossing over. |
Odds the buyers was someone in the industry pumping Jordans or keep their pump going of their own stuff. 100%

It would have to be SCI so that his purchase of the PSA 8 for over 100k doesn't look silly anymore, right? |
440 kind of seems like a deal to me if you think the early psa 8/7 prices are at all sustainable. Granted I would expect them to come down.
Looking at the 86 fleer jordan you have about 9x as many psa 9 as psa 10 and the psa 10 goes for 8-10x as much. Good chance you end up with 8-10x as many psa 8 vs psa 9 Jordan stars. If anything this sale would make me think the psa 8 star jordan should be worth more like 50-60. |
Congrats to the owner of BGS 8.5 for converting a card that was worth 35-40K into a card that is worth 440K by crossing over.
One of the most amazing legitimate cross overs in history. Not like some guy who bought a card in psa 5, trimmed it or cleaned it, and resubbed to get a PSA 8 (no names mentioned here). Dude crossed it and then got paid… wow |
Wow.. amazing. Great business decision to grade these cards. It's literally making people hundreds of thousands of dollars overnight.

Nice cross

Only a successful crossover of BGS 8.5 to PSA 8 or above is profitable for now. As PSA 8 pop (current pop is 6, total PSA pop is 40) increases and should their value drop to 40K-50K range in the future, a BGS 8.5 crossover to PSA 8 will no longer be lucrative after the grading fee. PSA 7's are still available for 35K OBO with no takers. BGS 8.5's are still in the 35-40K range as well. That 440K sale has had no impact on the value of BGS 8/8.5's and low grade PSA copies (grades 7 and below). It should be of no surprise given the pop numbers and the current state of the market. |
Should I re-grade with PSA and try and receive an 8? do you think it stands a chance?

That’s a very nice 8.5. I can’t see where they deducted for edges at all. My guess is that it would cross into a PSA 8 holder without a problem.

It has a small amount of white top left middle. it's minor but still visible. Thanks for your input! |
I’d say no unless you’re flipping immediately after it’s graded. It’s a now or never. Simply putting it in a different flip is meaningless if it’s a hold. Which should be what you do with this one. It’s a total blazer!
|
Probably an 8-8.5. Would need to see it in person to see how bad that top edge is. It’s a very nice copy!
|
Is the white at the top a small (very small) ding or an issue when cut just minor fiber loss?

But given how much $$ you can gain by crossing, I say it's worth the risk. |

Having said that, I think this is a super nice card that looks awesome with the Silver BGS 8.5 label. I wouldn’t chance it, looks great as is, IMHO. You have a beautiful $35K-$40K card. |
Even Beckett is featuring Star Company on the latest issue, October, 2022, just released (cover below).
Add in the PSA buzz and some real momentum is building. Good time to look for buys on these 1980's beauties! Hard to find good buys, but they are out there at auction. BIN prices are unreasonably high, like with everything else.
Waiting on my copy. Do own 2 Jordan Star Cards. Anything good in the OCT 2022 BK issue worth reading or is this just good timing to sell some xtra Becketts? |
