And I'll still make good money selling the singles. And they know that too, which is why they can charge so much.
Now that the product is in it second week, I’m definitely seeing prices on singles fall. I hope you’re for your sake...but I’m just not seeing it. My last 3 jumbo boxes cost me $1500 and I hit a true gold Able auto and Maximo sparkle and thought I killed it until I saw what those went for on eBay ($277/$350). There’s no chance I can scrap together $900 from the cards left over, let alone make a profit.

You thought you'd make profit off of 3 jumbos? C'mon man!
Grade that pair and double your return. Grade your chrome rookies. Sell everything and you might get back your money.

Problem for you is the loose prospects. Hard to move a single chrome or paper of a player unless it's a top name. I will have player lots, sets, insert sets, etc. plus a lot of nice color non-auto over the course of 5 cases. Makes a difference when you can list player lots as opposed to singles. I bet if you listed every single card with eBay Standard Shipping you would do just fine but I don't blame you if you don't want to put the work in for that.

I didn’t end up with a case just did 4 boxes and 4 packs. Blaze came out of the 4 packs. The Mayo orange and franco same box. Think I’ll quit now. I’ve hit a red of Hernandez jordan sabato and a orange Mayo then the nugget card that seems to be hard to hit.

Sorry, I’m not paying $25 to get a 3 or 4 dollar card graded so it then could be $20. What do you think PSA and Beckett are in the mess they are in? It’s because people keep sending low dollar base cards to get graded.

Archimedes 05-05-2021 11:23 PM

Here are my best pulls from 12 boxes. The autos are refractors and the Wander is red /5

Nice Mayo and Franco!

Pomares auto looks like it came from a 1 year old. Especially next to that pretty Bonaci auto.

Just want to chime in and remind everybody that the average price of a 1st Chrome Auto has practically doubled since November after being up >50% in the year before that. They are literally 3x since November 2019.

Anyone else run into positively atrocious QC issues? Got these direct from Topps:

Just about every chrome card has some type of issue.

Seen a few of my chromes like that as well.

re: qc issues. I received a Hedbert Perez Gold Shimmer Auto that had pretty good amount of wax peeling on the backside. I hate sending anything back but I figure I'll do that here with such a high value card. I don't usually mind smaller issues like print lines or roller marks but this is pretty bad.

Same here. On my next box, the auto was to 50, but had huge scratches running vertically on the card. Had to send that one back. Hopefully they return something decent.

I have more or less given up on opening any of the new product that I buy. Both Topps and Panini have brought production quality to levels that make about 90% of all cards damaged out of the pack.

I opened a jumbo of 2020 Draft and every single chrome card of value was scratched. I opened a box of 2020 Prizm basketball and 80% of the quality cards were scratched. I opened a box of 2020 Heritage High and the only Robert in the box was trashed.

Basically anything shiny is going to be trashed and when you factor that in to the return of value, you're never going to get anything approximating the 25% of the price of the box back in return.

There's got to be something about their production or packing processes during Covid-19 causing all this because anything from 2019 and before was much, much better on quality.

Archimedes 05-06-2021 09:41 AM

There’s a fine scatch on the red Wander. See below at 8:00. Would you send it back?

The surface scratching is on virtually every refractored card. I put a disclaimer on ALL of my eBay listings because there's just nothing that can be done about it. I can't send hundreds of refractors back to Topps, and if I did it is doubtful they could be replaced with ones that aren't scratched. When an issue is so widespread that it affects the majority of cards, I find buyers are less likely to return cards. It won't take long for people to figure out that this just the norm this year.

oldgoldy97 05-06-2021 09:50 AM

If every card is a 9.5 or better then why have grading in the first place?

dani0100 05-06-2021 09:58 AM
If every card is a 9.5 or better then why have grading in the first place?
I think this misses the point. There are issues that effect condition that are fairly reasonable to expect out of a manufacturing process, and there are issues that are not reasonable to expect.

I think maybe 10% of glossy cards having some kind of scratch is acceptable. I think centering issues are acceptable. I think occasional rough-cut edges are acceptable.

I do not think obvious surface scratches on 80-90% of cards is reasonable or acceptable. Again, I think Topps seem to be able to pull off relatively decent production quality before 2020. Now they put out products with huge problems as the normal course.

I had thought maybe I was just having bad luck in 2020 and 2021, but it seems like the problem here is widespread. That's a pretty big problem, considering the pricing we're all paying for unopened stuff.

reddragonthe 05-06-2021 10:51 AM

Topps isn't going to start replacing these surface issues. It makes zero sense for them to do so. And zero cents. Imagine if they did. You think PSA got a lot of mail?

"Hey - if you have any cards with surface issues, send them to us - we'll find one that's got a 10 surface and send it back to you." - Future Former Topps Marketing employee

Where do these replacements come from? Custom print jobs? Custom print jobs that somehow avoid the same fate as the ones we have? Cards they held back... that went through the same process that created our endemic situation of surface issues?

We want pristine because pristine is valuable. Pristine is valuable because of manufactured scarcity/desire that we've created as not all are Pristine. Not all are pristine because (stuff) happens.

beaverman3001 05-06-2021 10:59 AM

Almost all chromes in my 3 boxes from Topps have surface problems. I don't expect a PSA 10 out the pack by any means but it is bad enough to where I'm having a hard time selling cards that normally would have sold super fast.

topps has no incentive to change anything until people stop buying it.
