World Cup won't do anything except expose most players.
Star players rarely excell at World Cups. Even Messi/Ronaldo do nothing. Winning team and maybe 1-2 players will really stand out. If Messi can't score goals at the World Cup except against scrubs what makes you think these overrated players will?? You think Sancho will score 7 goals for England and take them far? You think Pulisic or any American prospect will score 5 goals? The whole team might not score 5 goals at the whole tourney. Fati/Greenwood/Haaland/Felix/Pulsic/Reyna won't do anything at the world cup. They might not combine for 5 goals all together. Some won't even play.
Dayum dude .. is it just your shtick to constantly Nay say? Do you like any current players? So tiring to see every post of yours just all negative .. what a downer Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Lol
Good ol K13 |
The Euro and WC will be just like any big sporting tournament as there will be few winners and lots of losers just like the actually tournament and that is ok. It will be a great time to sell for sure if you have the right players.
I think the big questions for me is will people from other sports that got hammered the last few months come back for round #2 and will the FIFA 21 army stick around once they realize they spent $350 on a break for France Euro Select and walked away with a 3rd year Mbappe Silver Prizm worth $70 for the 5th time. |
K13 is partially correct, haaland might not even play at the worldcup.
|
Greenwood is far from a certainty too.
Pulisic .. with his injury record, i'd bet on him not playing rather than starring. |

Ding Ding. Soccer is more global than ever and the card game has expanded to some places where no other sport have. The buildup for the WC is gonna be awesome. I'm gonna try to load on Pulisic when I see prices going lower. Don't really care much about how he'll do in Chelsea...2022 or 2026 can end up being the best USA soccer team ever and he'll probably be the best player. |

Which will be a great thing for his card right K13? He is going to explode by not being there and being exposed!!!! :flex: |
Reading thru the last few posts, soccer guy depresses me.

And even then it doesnt matter if a player bombs, there are other tournaments. The Champions League is arguably a better and more prestigious trophy these days anyway. The 2024 World Cup is gonna have more teams which can only mean more weaker teams which means more goals. I wouldnt be surprised if 2024 sees someone getting double figures for the first time in 50 years. |
The World Cup is truly an embarrassing spectacle for all but poor and mediocre players. These players seize all of the glory while the superstars fade away into oblivion and everyone quickly forgets they ever existed.
Understandably, their card values will plummet as a result. Avoid buying cards of any star player for this reason. Make sure to only invest in the most obscure players. My rule of thumb is to scour eBay for players that I’ve never heard of and corner the market on them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Very true. However, the fact is that expectations are very high for most young players and success is already assumed and is built into their current price levels. So given where expectations already are, it's going to be very hard for anybody to exceed expectations by so much that it would serve as a catalyst to drive their prices higher than where they are right now. For the young American stars (Pulisic, Reyna, Adams, McKennie, Dest, etc.) you're talking about a US run to the quarterfinals at a minimum. For Haaland, you're talking getting Norway out of the group stages (and of course they may not even qualify). For the young Germans like Werner & Haavertz, it's 4-5 goals and a semifinal appearance at a minimum. And of course for Mpabbe, it would take another France WC victory combined with a Golden Boot. None of these outcomes are impossible....but the odds of them happening are fairly low. |
The real rise will be in the market as a whole as the World Cup puts soccer in the spotlight. New money enters the market as their interest is piqued. Player values aren’t going to singularly hinge on World Cup performance. They will see a nice boost if they net some goals and their country has some success, but this isn’t the main show.
The most important components of a player’s value are annual club performance in a noteworthy league, awards, and their career as a whole. Messi and Ronaldo never hoisted the Cup and the market certainly doesn’t seem to care. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Their career is known. Their value was low this summer, but increasing already - a 1934 Stanley Matthews Ardath RC sold for $1200 on Ebay yesterday, ungraded. I picked up 2x Matthews RCs, Dixie Dean 1927, more Deans, and others. All for about $500/600 total. They're off to PSA now (1 Matthews is in an album with the set, not taking it out). I have also put some $ into some current stars like Halaand and Sancho, a little Mbappe, a few others. Not much beyond that. |
I know i am going to offend a few people on here when i say this but...
Most soccer fans and even players could not care less about International Soccer. I and many others see it as a hindrance to club soccer which is where all the fuss is. Yes there is interest in the World Cup but i can assure you it has lost it's prestige. Many years ago if you ask a fan or a player what they would want to win it would be the World Cup. That has changed for many now as it is either the Champions League or Premier League. I await the bashing :) |

If he moves to a popular big team, bayern is big but am not sure it can make him a super star. He has to move to a big team in england or spain. The 2026 worildcup being 48 teams might help some countries. |

He was the best player in the world, but is he really a superstar? A superstar should be someone known by every football fan in the world and people should watch their game no matter what team he is from, messi and ronaldo are superstars, maradona and pele were too. I dont think lewa is part of that group. |

I can only think of one footballer from the early 1900s and thats Fatty Foulkes. Pre WW1 was a different sport. I really wonder will the Ogden cards ever really take off. Right, they are old, but they are also mostly forgotten players. Its not until the 20s that players become true stars with the likes of Dean and Drake but even then is there much interest in Ted Drake? When they are dirt cheap you may as well take a chance but I cant imagine the average ogden card ever becoming popular. |

Start with Steve Bloomer, Billy Meredith, G.O. Smith, Dixie Dean, and W.C. Athersmith. Then if you expand outside England (because every nation has its own heroes and legends), maybe Paulinho Alcantara (the all-time leading goalscorer at Barca until Messi arrived), Jose Nasazzi, Mattias Sindelar, Ricardo Zamora, and Gunnar Nordahl, and you're already at ten players with legendary status similar to Ty Cobb, in their respective countries.
Those of us who collect vintage cards have seen their values rise exponentially in the last year or so, and they're only going up. You can still get some cards quiet cheap, but it won't be long before 100-year old soccer cards and stickers are commanding values similar to other sports. Had to explain to them who he was when he died. Maradona is overrated anyway. He never even scored 20 goals in a season ONCE...how can you be a superstar like that? I liked him as a kid but his peak was so short in reality. |
Why is Gerd Muller never talked about???
