Help me understand the pricing difference.
It seems like the base over the past year has gone from 500 to now around 1000. Pop on that is about 4000 Psa 10

The diamond Psa 10 Pop is 246
The cognac Psa 10 Pop is 86
The Walmart Psa 10 is Pop 69
The Gold Psa 10 is Pop 48
The target red pop 10 is Pop 12.

How is it that now there is a doubling of the base price with almost a pop of 4000, and for the variations with not even a fraction available in Psa 10, there is not the same percentage of price increase.

Maybe someone can help but I believe prices ballpark for last year were not 50% less for the variations.
Give it some time. Trust me it will work itself out. Those variations will start taking off.
great pickup!
I wish I could claim that but no. FML.
Thanks and those are all good points, would there be no correlation if you compare his 09bc to the 11 Update. The price of the bc base auto compared to the parallels is a huge difference. They are both one of his best cards to own and yet his Update base is now approaching 1000 and a Gold Psa 10 just sold for 2900. There is a difference of about 3950 in the pop report.

For bc there is still a similar percentage to the update in the base to the parallels available in Psa 10. It is a smaller total pool. But the price difference between the variations is huge compared to the update
i recommend not being a slave to the Pop report
I have no clue. I wish I could say yeah it's legit and that i was the one who bought it but unfortunately no. I guess we'll have to wait and see if the oranges that are listed right now get sold at higher prices to really confirm the uptick in finest auto prices.

In my mind those finest are really really undervalued. I'm not saying it because I have one :) but those remind me of the tom brady contenders rookies and how they were kind of like step children to the spa brady rookies and then eventually they took over since they were the only auto rookies with Brady in a Pats uni. Those finest rookies are the only RC label Trout autos. Not only that but they are just great looking cards.
My bad. But those are sticker autos. Finest is the only on card auto rookie.

Sold two Trouts today, bought another. Seems like every Trout card I list, it sells quick.
Someone said this yesterday, but I think a lot of new hobby money is flowing into Trout. Can’t help but think his contract helped that happen.
It's the new age. Lebron and Tom Brady changed the modern sports card landscape and now Mike Trout. It has not gone unnoticed.

My worry is that we will enter another era of junk wax with more people spending money on the hobby.

Bidding looks a little suspicious... 0 and 3 feedback pushing it from the $850-900 norm to $1150.

And I noticed the 3 feedback guy had bids on the Trout ending Sunday night.... hope he doesnt ruin it.

Ferg1945 03-24-2019 12:37 AM

Both $999.00 Updates sold tonight

One said it sold for $950 but the other one didnt show a price... so either $950 or $999.

The one that ends Sunday night is currently at $910 with over 20 hours to go.... Guessing $950 might be the new price.

I thought for sure they'd fall back to $750-800 once we got away from the coupons and eBay bucks and get closer to Opening Day. I was wrong.

For breakouts to sustain, we need huge volume. Otherwise it will be a failed breakout. The buyers group who scooped up the updates last month spent approximately 20K. Not sure if that is enough to cause a new uptrend. Lot of variables come into play here- supply, demand, buying on weakness etc. Whether it is a short term trend or a sustainable intermediate to Long term trend depends on if more buyers are willing to buy at these levels. Otherwise the prices will dip back to 900 level. It would have been nice to have price trends on cards similar to stocks where you can see bull flag formations (pole on high volume followed by a flag/consolidation) before a high volume breakout whose target will be equal to the length of the pole once the break out happens. I personally think stock market technical analysis (bull flag, double bottom, cup and handle, RSI, MACD, BB etc) cannot be used in sports cards because of the difference in daily trading volume. Individual sport card daily trading volume is so small compared to individual stock daily trading volume.

Option derivatives and future contracts are a totally different game. In stock market, most people lose money in options even if they get the direction of price movement correct because of the IV crush and time decay.

KhalDrogo 03-24-2019 07:05 AM

Not a chance. Hell, it is difficult enough to apply technical analysis in the market with securities that have millions of shares traded a day.

I don't disagree that you can't apply technicals to cards, but due to the common psychology involved I think the analogues in the markets are interesting. Sport card sellers and buyers are aware of many of these factors even if they don't know the names of what they're doing.

Price manipulation happens both in sports cards and stock market. Stock market is regulated in some ways whereas sports card trading is not. Big money (Institutions) can drive the prices of individual stock especially if the company has a small market cap with number of outstanding shares less than 100 million. The same thing can be seen in sports cards trading where the price of cards with low print run or low numbered parallels can be manipulated to an extent compared to cards with high print run

I only really started getting back into this about 15 months ago. Can anyone tell me before the start of 2018, what was the frequency of eBay coupons and Bucks deals? It’s basically a weekly occurrence now, with the exception of the first three weeks of each quarter. I think that has played a significant role in the appreciation of US175. Of course, Trout’s play and the strength of the hobby has been a factor too.

Neal 03-24-2019 07:49 AM

I believe there will be an offer next week between Ebay bucks and coupons- the quarter is almost over.

Just my guess

It has to be approaching 86 Jordan like volumes of cracking out and crossing over

Yes, the coupons and ebay bucks also contributed to the rise in prices. I read somewhere that ebay upped the frequency of 8-10% bucks in 2018. Also, not every one gets the ebay bucks promo.

Timing of the ebay bucks based on the 2018 data below-

For Each Quarter,

[U]First month of the quarter- 3rd week
Second month of the quarter- 1st week
Third month of the quarter- 1st week AND End of the month which also the end of the quarter

Not sure if past promos guarantee future ones

The bottom line is that if Trout starts off hot, these prices are sustainable. If not, the prices may dip a little bit which would be a good opportunity to buy.
