Got my three in today. Into the closet they go.
The price for a box now only makes sense if you get a Robert, sell it and sell your refractors.
You are drastically underestimating the value of all the base cards. At current box prices, it doesnt make sense NOT to bust or hold. With the value of what you guaranteed, you are only paying a small amount for a chance at some HUGE cards.
Not sure if I am the first, but I did not have a base refractor in 1 of my 2 boxes.

I did very well overall anyway and should do much better than selling sealed at current prices...

Hit the Biggio in the box with the missing base refractor

That's what I get for taking a piss. :)

I told the dude to send me a counteroffer and he replied that he's going to take some time and field more offers.

I get up to use the bathroom, I sit back down and its sold.

no reason to rip

You're assuming that prices remain where they are, which may or may not be the case.

While this is a very cool product, it's also pretty much the ONLY cool product out there right now.

And a lot of the value is tied up in the cards of a single player (i.e. Robert) who has yet to play a single major league game. If he struggles, his prices drop, as does the value of sealed wax.

Not when you can sell on assumptions...

This is weird, his card is seriously adding almost $100 a day to the hobby boxes ...

Robert isn’t the only appeal to this set. The refractors and the limited print run will keep the value of these boxes strong....

That will apply to S2 certainly, but I see the value of his cards in Flashbacks as way out of line relative to current box price, so I think there is lots of room for those to drop without it affecting the price of sealed wax much if any.

CoEnt85 07-21-2020 06:34 PM

The 2 boxes I got are slightly different. The box on the right says "A Topps.com online exclusive", the box the on left does not. There must be a Trout super or something in the left box.

I'm not disagreeing...as I said....the set is very cool and very popular.

But if Robert struggles, and once the hobby spotlight turns to the next "hot" product, I could easily see box prices sliding back to the $200-250 range.

These days, pretty much everything is hotter than hotcakes when it first releases...

If anything, what will actually provide a floor under the product will be set-builders chasing singles.....

Except this is an extremely popular limited online exclusive that will be largely dried up (or stashed in closets) within 2 weeks. Even if demand drops it will always be greater than available supply.

I think you're probably right, because I think this could become an "iconic" set, just like the original Finest was in 1993, but the question is at what price level?

Right now, the hype around Robert is what is giving box prices that extra boost and if he struggles and his card values drop, I think it's reasonable to think that sealed wax prices will drop box a bit as well.

ToddW 07-21-2020 06:53 PM

Depends on how Robert and all the rookies do, as well as how many of the key supers/reds surface. If there is a string of those the boxes will go down- just like basketball took a drop when zion supers surfaced.
