maybe...but look at his td/interceptions - 20/2 - he is having an elite season and you can't possibly give derrick henry all the credit for that
While I would give it to Lamar right now, it is very close in my mind. There are others having elite seasons as well without the supporting cast that Lamar benefits from. I wouldn't fault anyone that had someone like Allen ahead of Lamar based on that argument.

tjforce 11-05-2024 06:49 PM

Here's what Allen has (besides current record) that Jackson doesn't:

The ability to beat Patrick Mahomes head to head.

I look at the top 10 MVP list and it's becoming a list of QB's that have already lost to Mahomes head to head:
-Lamar
-Burrow
-Purdy
-Cousins

It's literally half of the top 8 excluding Mahomes. If Allen wins his next two games and beats the Chiefs, he's the favorite. Goff will then have his chance to dethrone him on Thanksgiving day.

JWBlue 11-05-2024 06:53 PM

Jackson is a better wager for OPY.

Having Henry on his team hurts his chances for MVP.

That Ravens chiefs game came down to the wire so not sure it is fair to use that as the differentiator between allen and lamar

it pretty much could've gone either way

But it didn't.

Lamar had a chance to win the game and straight blew it. I don't understand the point on an MVP award if something like that doesn't get taken into consideration.

boxbuster7 11-05-2024 08:41 PM

because it is one game out of 17

Alright, let's see the current roster

Ravens RB >> Bills RB
Ravens TE >> Bills TE
Ravens WR = Bills WR

Ravens have a much better roster and if Lamar ends up with the same record with Allen then you know who people will vote for. Another factor to add is voter fatigue is real. There has never been anyone named mvp 3x before they win at least 1 SB. Being playoff choker is also a knock down on Lamar

4barrel 11-05-2024 09:56 PM

Does Lamar’s playoff performance from last season impact the MVP race for this season? If that’s the case and we can use last seasons results to make a case for this year, Lamar didn’t have Henry last season and still set the world on fire. He doesn’t need Henry in order to win the MVP.

No, but again. Noone won 3 mvp before winning at least a SB and it wont start now

boxbuster7 11-06-2024 11:51 AM

bro...the mvp and super bowl literally have NOTHING to do with eachother. Thats just a random stat you pulled out of your you know what...one is a regular season award and one is not

It always comes down to regular season record and QBR. Check last 18 or so MVP winners. Almost 90% were a 1-2 seed and of QBs over 85% were top 3 in QBR.

Lamar is taking this running away. It is not close.

Alright I'll eat my words. He looked amazing second half. But, that first half play was incredibly puzzling and lackluster

that's a first

I do find it interesting that it's not unprecedented for teammates to capture both the MVP and OPOY. In 1999 and 2001 Kurt Warner got the MVP and Marshall Faulk the OPOY. Didn't seem to hurt Warner's candidacy throwing to Bruce and Holt either. I don't think Henry hurts Jackson's chances at MVP.

Qualifying Statements
There's still plenty of regular season left, nothing is written in stone.
I do not count the years were the MVP and OPOY were won by the same guy.
The example mentioned above is the only time this has happened since 1972, it is rare.

Current odds -

Lamar +175
Allen +350
Mahomes +500
Goff +700
Daniels +1200
Hurts +1200
Burrow +2000
Darnold/Purdy +2500
Cousins +2800
Murray/Stroud +3000

And OPOY -
Henry -140
Barkley +250
Chase +550
Jefferson +550
Lamar +2000

gomiamigo 11-08-2024 08:13 PM

Anyone betting Lamar at those odds should have their head examined.

Old enough to remember Nick Foles throwing for 27 TDs and 2 INTs in a season and not getting close to the MVP [and won the Division also].

Led the league in rating, YPC, YpA, AYpA, TD%. Also 3 rush TDs.

And he left the field in the playoffs with the lead, 2 TDs, no INTs and 70% comp.

So yeah, nobody wins these after 10 or 13 games.

JWBlue 11-08-2024 08:39 PM

What I don't understand is why LJ is still +2000 for OPY. His numbers look like they will be as good as anyone's.

Onepocketj 11-08-2024 08:55 PM
What I don't understand is why LJ is still +2000 for OPY. His numbers look like they will be as good as anyone's.
Because the MVP has basically become the QB award and OPOY is for everyone else.

Last 5 winners -
CMAC
Jefferson
Cupp
Henry
Thomas
